Been detecting this yard steady for nearly a decade with various detectors yet I’ve still been able to snipe some targets with the 6” coil that I had missed. Getting the Equinox 800 tomorrow and thought I’d ask for any tips you may have starting out. I have an AT Pro which I have been using for about 5 years and before that I was swinging a Whites Spectrum XLT. The Equinox looks like a game changer from all the You Tube videos I have been watching. Your test here on the 6 “ coil is promising. I ordered mine with the extra 6” coil for searching in some trashy parks. I’ve enjoyed all your videos. Thank you!
@MetalDetectingNWGA
@MetalDetectingNWGA 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rick! Congrats on the new detector! I also used an XLT and AT-Pro for a while before getting an Equinox. A bit of a learning curve coming from those machines but not too bad. Learning the difference between iron targets and good targets was my first major hurdle to overcome with my Equinox. Here's what I can tell you: Don't get carried away with the iron bias setting. Iron Bias setting is a trade off. Turning it up will make iron targets break up a little more, but it also makes good targets that are near iron break up. Sort of defeats the whole purpose of Nox's strengths which is its ability to pick out good targets from thick iron. I never go higher than 2 on my IB setting. The trick to limiting the amount of iron you dig with this detector is tone repeatability. When you get a questionable tone, wiggle your coil over the target and pay close attention to how well it repeats. Iron targets will be hit or miss and the location of the target may seem to move around slightly. A good non-ferrous target will repeat every time and the signal will remain in the same location beneath the coil as long as you sweep it consistently. Even if it only hits in one direction, it should still repeat as long as the swing angle remains the same. Once you master this, a light bulb will go off in your head, and you'll start digging out those good targets in the trashy locations that you've hunted with other detectors in the past. Other than that, I’d suggest starting out with a 5 tone program. 50 tones can be sensory overload for someone who is new to using the detector. Put some hours on the machine and everything will start to click. Good luck man! Thanks for watching and commenting! HH Dewayne

I felt the same way when I first got my Equinox. I'd say give it a little time. It does get better and easier to use. Put at least 50 hours on the machine before you decide to send it back. It really is a great detector but like most others, takes a bit of time to master. I'm no expert with it, but would be happy to help with any questions you may have. HH Dewayne

@MetalDetectingNWGA
@MetalDetectingNWGA 5 жыл бұрын
Yessir, I’d definitely do the update right away. It fixes an issue of how the detector responds to big silver coins on edge. I demonstrated the problem in one of my previous videos. You’ll learn the Nox’s language with time. I felt the same way at first. I think most folks do. But if you hang in there and put in the time, I think you’ll find that it really is a great detector. For now, I’d suggest simplifying things by discing out all but the ID range of the most desirable targets you hope to find. As you get more experience, you can open up to accept more targets. Also, I’d suggest starting in park 2 with 5 tones vs 50 tones. IMHO 50 tones can be a bit overwhelming when hunting a trashy area. Set the tone breaks however you like. I’d put iron bias at about 2 or 3 for a while to help weed out some of the falsing iron. Again, once you get a feel for the machine you can lower it a bit. A slightly lower recovery speed of 5 or so will make the detector sound off with a longer tone on good targets. Makes it easier to distinguish good targets from random chirps. A recovery speed of 5 is still very fast compared to most other detectors. One more thing that’ll help pick out the good targets from the iron: Only dig repeatable signals. Even if it only hits in one direction, it should still be repeatable every single time provided your sweep speed and coil location remains the same. Those random chirps and falsing wont be consistent like a good target. Good luck to you! HH Dewayne

I think the biggest reason so many people are making a big deal about the Nox is bang for the buck. It checks off a lot of things folks are looking for out of a detector, and at a decent price when compared to other detectors with similar capabilities. Simultaneous multi-frequency, waterproof, fast, lightweight, updatable & reasonably priced = winner. I still prefer my CTX 3030 for coin shooting most of the time, but the Equinox has definitely earned a place in my arsenal. Its great for hunting thick iron.
