Welcome to Metal Detecting NYC. Today I'm going to compare two metal detectors:
Minelab Manticore and XP Deus 2. Which one should you buy? Which is the best treasure metal detector? I'll be testing XP Deus 2 and reviewing just released Minelab Manticore on the basis of already existing Minelab Equinox 800 & 600 detectors. Watch the video till the end to find out which metal detector is better and why. Don't forget to leave a comment below and subscribe to my channel. Stay tuned!

Hi, my name is Merrill Kazanjian. New York City is an amazing place to go metal detecting. We have lots of parks, colonial history and great beaches for beach detecting. I have gone to all five boroughs of New York City To Metal Detect and beyond. I also currently own 19 metal detectors. I want to have the best and I want to help you choose the best as well. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn

Another great, no BS video! You are the genuine article! I’m an Equinox 800 user and here in the UK, we are forced to ignore the numbers to ID targets. I really only use the numbers to determine if the Nox is trying to lock onto something by giving me the same number amongst jumping numbers. The big take away from your video is to pull the coil back and front tip the target. 👊🏼

@gaz419 Yes, this is how I attempt to quickest pinpoint & target separate with a DD coil. I even sometimes use the back tip for the same reason, to avoid turning 180° around & front tipping, if the best target to dig of multiple targets is furthest away from me.

Good video Merrill, I am patiently waiting for my manticore and think it will be great. I am really impressed with the new equinoxes also, I think they will be totally awesome. Thanks Merrill, after watching this video I am (for now!😅) not worried I bought into the Deus2 to early. When the manticore came out, I was really afraid I spent €1600 on the deus2 and had to replace it 10 months later already and splash out another 2k (that I could also spend on my family 😂) for the manticore. I can now sleep again. You’re the best.

I really think Minelab should have done a Re-Call. They knew there was a leakage problem with the Equinox 600 and 800 they should have addressed it in some way. Fix it or extend the warranty for a couple more years if water in the control box is the problem.

Thanks For this video. If I had the money I would buy them both. 1 I love the hobby 2 I love learning new detectors 3 I really want the best detector out there. But it still comes down to the user and how well they know there detector. Depth has always been a problem on fringe depth objects. Our Ears are still our best things we can use for determining weather or not to dig it up. Happy New Year

Wrong Merrill, I'm not here because I'm going to take the plunge into one of these detetors. I'm here because this is your video and your videos are top notch. Your videos are the most intertaining, and the best for learing how to metal detect. I love my Deus II, and am still waiting for my Manticore. No problem my waiting, my Deus II is an awesome machine. Last time out I found two wheats, two Buffalo Nickels, and a Mercury Dime, that I'm positive I passed my NOX 800 over. That being said, I'm hoping I will like the Manticore more than I love my Deus II. Thank you Marrill.

Another great video. BTW, if you have an old coax cable from your tv, use about 2 feet of it for a test. Connect it to the xp coil and bring it up the shaft the remainder 15 inches or so. Put the coil in the tub of water to cover. You should still hear the signals, You should only need to run the coil to the remote if everything is under water. So you can submerge the coil to the end of the cable going up the shaft 15 inches or so as long as the cable end is not submerged.

Here’s something that is a fact , beach 2 on a nox 800 , sensitivity ti only 15 in house air test on a 916 3 gram ring only can pick up at 4 inches , Now the Manticore with a 11 inch coil , sensitivity to 15 was double that , 8 inches . I purchased a manticore and was lucky to get it . From UK and living in Malaysia 🇲🇾, lucky for me, Malaysia gif a batch in from Minelab , Christmas came with a nice surprise. Now the build is brilliant and I have baptised the manticore ans no leaks at all , not that I had any with my Nox 800 . So all in all the Manticore is a beast 👍

Started with a Nokta simplex + and since 5 months with the equinox 900. Great machine’s up to now 💪🏼 The separation of the Nox is next level and the multi frequency of course a major plus compared to the Simplex. The simplex only uses the 15 kHz frequency, which is a great medium ranged frequency. I’m not using it on the beach anymore though… I think the Nokta Legend is a way better option for the frequent beach hunter.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you are into pulling that last Reale or half dime off an old cellar hole lip you will buy a Deus, take the time to learn it and do just that ....... find the few remaining items you missed over the last 30 years in HEAVY iron. If that's not your thing, honestly, most any quality machine will be great.

I think you are or were a very good school teacher, as you have indicated your profession before. I’ll get to md’ing shortly. I have had some good teachers and some really bad ones. There is an honesty and a skill that comes across through your videos that teachers need to have to get across to students, whatever the subject. I’ll bet your kids and students appreciate that about you. The Deus 2 seems to be a nightmare to get to know. I had an 800, and if they ever become available, I’m leaning toward the Manticore. Thanks for the video on them. On another channel, the guy says “cawl” for coil, and other language hurdles to try and understand. Thanks for your good teaching technique.

Hi Merrill, thanks for all those great little tips on the pros and cons of both those two. But the reason as you mentioned that you felt more are ease with the Minelab is common for all us older people ( which is probably the vast majority of people in this sport/hobby/obsession). It is the screen is larger, the fonts are bolder and easier to see, the Deus screen is faint and not easy to see the tiny icons in the bright sunshine. Thanks for warning me about the Desus coil it is a pain to charge and the wire breaks? I guess after this video of yours Desus 3 will becoming out soon. Highly recommended, my first time out I climbed 500ish ft elevation to realize my remote was gone and the panic ensued! Later that day found 1895 "o" barber so it worked out. I like your comparison videos, when you match signals with detectors. That I believe is the true test of a detector. It’s not burying a coin and checking to see how deep it can pick it up. But going over a signal and seeing what detector can pick it up then dig it. That’s the great test.

Well you earned a new subscriber! My wife loves metal detecting, I picked her up a ACE 250 with the Pro Pointer 5 years ago for Christmas. Looking to upgrade her (metal detector not her LOL) and found your channel. We live 20 miles South of Boston (beaches full of rubbish) She cleans more beaches and parks than our parks and beaches department! LOL

I think the best point you made in this video is something I’ve already pondered when considering buying a manticore. “How much deeper do you really want to dig?” I own a nox 600 and I bought the Legend when so many people started having issues with the nox leaking. So now I keep the nox for a backup detector. 99% of my hunting is done in the water and those 2 detectors find targets pretty much as deep as I’m able to recover a target in the water and sometimes deeper than I can dig. I just can’t come up with a good reason to throw $1500 at another detector. I agree with you the Legend is a tremendous detector for the price. It’s basically an equinox that doesn’t leak. Maybe the manticore might be more stable in salt water than the legend? I can crank the sensitivity pretty high with the legend tho. I’d love to buy a manticore. I just need someone to give me a good reason to own it over the legend and I haven’t heard one yet.

Merrill, you bring up an interesting aspect of audio. You have trained your ear to listen carefully to the sounds and recognize many of them. You state you like the Deus 2 sounds because they are square waves. Square waves do in fact produce a great deal of harmonics, which perhaps you have begun to mentally analyze in a superior fashion, providing greater insight. As a suggestion, try setting up your detectors at the outset, then cover the displays with cardboard (or paper) and go detecting. You will now be able to see your results when dug up by sound only, and it may provide some excellent results. Just a thought. Cheers

Great info Merrill! I bought the 900 for the simple reason to see if I can flood it? Have always used minelab machines but have flooded the CTX, 2 800s and 2 600s? The only machine I havent flooded is my Xcal! The only true water machine! Im a water hunter in Florida and have to say I hunt with several friends (in water) that have the Deus 2 and have not had a water issue? WHATS UP MINELAB??? Love the machines so I thought I would take a chance on it being EXTREMELY WATERPROOFED???? We will see? Another super video Merrill! Always enjoy!! 👍👍👍👍👍

I've been toying with getting a new machine that can do both and leaning to the Deus 2 -but after hearing your review I'm having doubts(re beach water set up)..Now that you mentioned a new minelab machine maybe I'll wait, and also give the nox 900 some more research effort. Thanks for the informative video. I am a current owner of a Garrett AT Max. I just started researching and detecting seriously last year and decided to upgrade to a multi-frequency detector since I felt like I was missing good targets due to lack of separation technology. I would prefer to stay with American made but we are not there compared to Minelab or Deus. If I had a Minelab 800, I would hold tight on the Manticore purchase since I feel the 800 can compete with both the 900 and Manticore at this time. Since I have neither and mostly a land hunter, I am going with the Manticore for simplicity and the opportunity for programming upgrades in the future that can combat the nail falsing in the future. I plan to keep the Manticore for many years and the AT Max as a backup since I am not the type who runs out and grabs the latest and greatest.

American technology put multi frequencies in DFX detector in the late 90s and in the early 2000's the V3i ran 3 with a display screen that rivals detectors today. They were ahead of their time and people didn't want to spend time to learn them. Meanwhile their patents expired and Mi elab took them and ran with it. The difference today is the speed of micro processors which is the only reason they get better depth but for over 50 years detectors never changed the basic principle of transmitting a magnetic field through a coil inducing a response in the target metal and picked up by the receiver coil. Pulse induction is about the only other difference in how these detectors work. With all of these new detectors coming out in the last 5 years when you look back at it they aren't really pushing the needle very much other then bells and whistles on a digital screen. And now they use colors to drive market share. Minelab put out the Nox 600, 700, 800, 900 Manticore and even that is going back to somewhat the same platform they started with in the CTX 3030. They flood the market with detectors for maximum profit. They are notorious for releasing machines that should never be released until all problems get worked out. I think it's horrible the customer has to inform them that they release detectors that aren't ready to be released and they've done this back to the late 90's with the Excalibre that leaked. The batteries would die in weeks and it took months sometimes up to 6 months to send it in to be repaired and have it returned. They do this with your money in their pocket and 40 years later the Manticore is gonna do the same thing. By 40 years they still can't get rid of an iron nail where my old DFX clearly shows bars on a screen saying there's iron wrapping around and causing the falsing of a signal and it would give reading on the display warning that literally says "target overload" when a signal over big iron like a horseshoe that wraps around the VDI scale. Yet today Minelab detectors are still digging horseshoes??? Why am I the only person that questions this lol IDK sheeze . If they use old out dated tech at least use that tech in their discrimination also instead of selling a new machine a year later claiming to be the best and it's not. It's possibly gone backwards??? They are concentrated more on profits then developing a great product for it's price which is exactly what Makro has done. In fact they are about to break out soon mark my word they are starting to develope the tech to image the ground in real time. This is a leap forward everything else is bells and whistles if you look how far they push the bar It's literally micro but their price point increase is macro (pun intended)

@@MetalDetectingNYC Merrill I just saw that video on my other device I was gonna reply to it later. Different tablets I have have different KZfaq material subscribed. But I would like to follow up on a couple of things. For instance I might've been off a year or two on my memory of when certain detectors came out but that's what happens when you get old. At least it shows I try helping with comments from experience and I'm not one of those guys who google something then they come on and post as if they know everything. I also deal with PTS from a near death accident so at times my might gets a little excited and I may not word things the way I should and posting comments 2:00 a.m. half a sleep doesn't help. I'll explain a little better when I reply on your video. But yeah it was a surprise to first see that comment in highlights which I thought someone commented the same thing as I did but it was more of a surprise to see how you found that video of White engineer explaining "dual frequency" not this multi simultaneously blah blah blah nonsense sales pitch of Minelab when it doesn't process as many as it leads people to believe. I have a cool story about why Whites didn't apply for that patent yet Minelab sneaks in and does it. Thanks for the videos keep em coming

The idea that you are gonna completely clear all the targets from one area or that you never gonna miss a target I think is not possible, let's start with that. No matter which metal detector you choose you always gonna miss some targets, the way I see it is how much time are you going to take to get to know your metal detector and base on my experience of more than 13 years with my minelab xplorer II (yes is an old metal detector but still working till today) I will definitely go with a minelab metal detector cause I know, with the proper care that is gonna last me for a really long time. Thanks for the video and can't way to see when you take the manticore to the beach. Greetings from California.

I have the manticore on order but am a little concerned about some of the tests I have seen so far, it appears it loves nails and gives a false signal I presently have a D2 and a legend I will keep the D2 the legend has to go although it is a good detector for the money. Also considering changing my order to the equinox 900 looks to me like the 2D screen is just a big distraction not that accurate
