This is more of an emotional solo rather than a technical one. Kanami likes to write music that evokes an emotional response. This is a solo you can hum to yourself, rather than a super technical Lovebites style solo. Though, I would like to see Kanami get technical one of these days. A few months back Kanami was on Twitter asking everyone if she should continue doing solos in songs. She seemed worried people didn't want to hear solos anymore. Everyone assured her they most definitely did want more solos. She seemed happy about the responses. :-)

Ha! Definitely NOT the only person that wishes she did longer solos - while I admire her dedication to the flow of the song, certain tunes to me just cry out for a long solo - but can I complain? God no - love Kanami and love Band-Maid!

They play about 23- 25 songs per show. Considering how technical and different some of their songs are...it is a lot to remember. They have 10 minutes break. Yes...this solo is just more about entertainment, feeling and soul. Thanks for reacting. I appreciate the self awareness. I still don't think you have watched Play Live...first 1.5 minutes of intro is a jam session. Rhythm section is on hyperdrive throughout the song. Moratorium...the song this solo leads into is a Maidiac favorite with twists and turns. Has perhaps BMs heaviest breakdown section. Dragon Cries is very Hendrix like. Also has an unusual and technical bridge designed to simulate chaos. Don't Be Long is a great instrumental and you can really hear Kanami's lead work Unfair Game has Kanami's longest solo

Kanami very recently said on twitter that she was thinking of dropping her solos in songs as she had read some feedback from people that they skipped over her solos. the fanbase put her straight and rather than cut them out she should do more and longer ones. she said she was happy that people liked her solos and would continue but that she didn't think making them longer would work as she believes the solos shouldn't overwhelm the song itself and must remain subtle and harmonious (a very Japanese answer)

I’m not sure how good Twitter’s auto translate feature is, but I think she was saying she heard of people saying that they skip over guitar solos in general, not that their fans were skipping her solos.

Kanami is a very gentle soul. When she lets loose it's as much a surprise to her as to to the spectators. That puts her far away from guitarists that want to be noticed for their capabilities. I'd say that makes her, to me, irresistible as a guitar player as well as a human being.

Here's a improv jam that will show some of his skills. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nseIZ8iKmcCqm4k.html Or his acoustic version of 'Monsters' . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7GHi8mexLidiXU.html Even Shinedown commented, and asked permission to post it on their media sites. No no no, you are definately NOT the only one wishing she would do longer solos! She does extend live performances somewhat (the whole band does, actually), but it seems to be her nature that she doesn't want to "take over" a song. In her mind, the solo is a portion of a song that makes a point. She's not a "show-off". Above all she doesn't want to be boring so once that point is made, it's time to go back to the song and get out of the way. But the thing is, the way her mind works is by its very nature NOT BORING. This video comes from 2019 Summer Sonic in Tokyo and it is definately in the middle of the set - it leads into Moratorium. There are a few fan cam videos from their 2019 European tour that are very similar, one in Hamburg made by Vladimir Chupin is legendary. Their shows ARE really exhausting. They do take short breaks but they never leave the stage (well, Saiki does sometimes but the rest of them don't). They just chill for a few minutes while Miku does a short MC bit. There will be several; the first one is usually after five or six song and Miku says, basically, "We're so excited to be here! Are you enjoying it so far?" Somewhere in the middle of the show there will be another short break with more crowd interaction, often they will combine it with an instrumental and/or a Miku song to give Saiki some extended rest, then in the last half of the "serving" Miku will do "magic spell time" where she'll lead chants and cast a magic spell on the audience so they will never forget their experience. By the way, Miku NEVER takes a break; from the time they take the stage until the lights come up, she's entertaining the "masters and princesses" the entire time. And when they get to the end, it's the end. They don't do encores any more; they say they give all their energy and they do not reserve any, so after the last song they are spent. There seems to be a trend to eliminate all guitar solos from modern music; there was a post I saw somewhere that Spotify users skip to the next song when a solo starts because "they are boring" So producers are eliminating them from songs. This might be an overreaction to the Jerry Garcia/Trey Anastasio style extended "noodling" but there are guitarists like Warren Haynes who can improvise extended solos, they are very much coherent statements and not mindless noodling at all. I don't know her and I've never been in a band meeting or rehearsal so this comment is worth every cent it cost you, but it seems to me like she works everything out on piano or on a sheet of paper first (or with the melody and chord chart). I don't get the feeling that she improvises much, not on stage in front of an audience. Most of us in the west probably learned improvisation by playing over a 12-bar blues and that is a good way to get your feet wet. If Akane and MISA could just lay down a pattern and let her vamp over it... even if it's just for a verse or chorus, it would be great to see what unseen world her mind takes us to.

Depending on the song, and which section in the song, Kanami changes how she holds her pick. There is a translation of an interview over on reddit where she says she will either use the tip, the side or the back of the pick depending on the sound she is trying to achieve. And this is the intro solo to their performance of Moratorium at Summer Sonic 2019, my favorite version of the song. It will be found at twenty minutes and twenty seconds into the full performance if you look for it. She also used this solo on their European tour, where she also threw in some Santana a few times. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbKIfMmivuCZpZc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mK2ilLqdzJixh5s.html

Imho, Kanami strongest asset is her compositional skill. She is an extremely prolific rock music composer - there aren’t many rock musicians who have created as many high-quality songs, most with at least 4 or 5 musical motifs in the same song. That’s what amazes me about them and her in particular as the primary composer and why I’m drawn to them in way i haven’t been drawn to any band since being drawn to Yes and Rush decades ago. Those are the only other bands I know as prolific in composing the type of rock music that really stimulates and satisfies my musical cravings in a similar way to Band-Maid. Zeppelin and Floyd are something else as special in a different way. But other than those bands, I can’t think of a band I like as much as Band-Maid - that’s how highly I think of them. It’s not important that Kanami plays longer solos or plays an EVH eruption solo concert segment. She’s not an improvisational player - she’s a composer and I absolutely love what she composes and plays as part of her song compositions. Also, she is a VERY busy player in their music - constantly tackling some new phrase, switching techniques and methods all through their songs, particularly their latest music. She needs a few moments where she can just let go and do some simple wailing away - it’s gotta be the real stress reliever it looks like. Then it’s back to her precise playing and performance she’s known for for another hour. It’s gotta be mentally demanding - like an Alex Lifeson or Steve Howe performance. Her she gives the audience some entertainment and cool riffing and emotional release - heck yeah, I’m here for it and don’t need anything else from her. We have Vai and Satriani and Eric Johnson for the other. Let Kanami do what she does and does best - compose and play the best rock music being created on planet earth 🌍 today 🤷🏻‍♂️🔥✌🏼🤘🏼😎

We are of like mind. Yes and Rush, and other classic bands, have been my mainstays for 40+ years and Band Maid just fits right in there with such groups in my estimation. And, as far as Kanami is concerned, I really think she’s as good as any guitar player I’ve heard in a true band setting. IE., a band of players all of fairly equal high caliber making great songs. Not to be compared to guitarists who have a band behind them who are there just to support him… like Malmsteen, for instance. He takes all the time he wants to show off and, while impressive technically, the results are still not that memorable a lot of the time, IMO. Kanami will never do that… it’s always about the song and, as you mention, she does tons of terrific work throughout many songs that people may not focus on. When you do, though, you can’t help but be impressed. Kudos for mentioning Alex Lifeson and, especially, Steve Howe. Howe gets overlooked far too often and I feel that the more progressive kinds of guitar playing Kanami does reminds me very much of his classic work with Yes in the 70’s.

A few words about Nightwish (Floor Jansen) and more. Alan Dean Foster, the famous American fantasy and science fiction writer who applied his writing talent to such hits as Star Wars and Star Trek, maintains a music section on his blog. "There are many good singers, fewer great singers, and a very small number who are unique singers. Diana is a natural dramatic contralto. This is the lowest range for a female singer. She is also polyphonic. Roughly, this means that when she sings she often sounds like more than one person singing at once. As you can imagine, the combination is extraordinary. So too is her full range. Singers at age 14 can do things that astonish us. Witness the careers of Jordan and the Dutch prodigy Amira Willighagen. But even when included in this company there is something special about Diana. I love the performances of the two singers I just mentioned, but they are (perfectly) controlled and measured. Diana is more akin to a force of nature. One of the most common descriptions of her performances is “shamanistic.” Some of this has to do with the remarkable timbre of her voice, some with the sheer intensity of her performing. In this she is closer to Floor Jansen. With both women you can see as well as hear the intensity, the emotion, contained with both the lyrics and the music. A duet between the two would be something magical." I also recommend checking out the top vocalist, the most unique and incredibly talented Diana Ankudinova.

Alan Foster writes at the end of his article about Diana:. "Her first two-minute performance on the show (all the initial performances are brief) is of a very dark version of Elvis Presley’s “Can’tHelp Falling in Love.” I’m not sure what you anticipate hearing, but I guarantee it won’t be anything like what you expect. The show’s production values are also outstanding. Two things I noticed immediately when comparing this performance to Diana’s previous ones: first, her control shows the results of ayear’s worth of professional voice training, and second, as she matures her power is becoming fully unleashed. When someone says she blows you away, it carries a literal meaning. " Alan's full article about Diana Ankudinova is posted in my Community section.
