Yes, it was "I love you" in Mandarin Chinese. It was for the Dears. This whole performance was a love song especially for his fans. The beautiful part that you described as "ethnic" was meant to imitate a muezzin calling the faithful to prayer from the minaret. He used to JUMP up and land very hard on his knees, until fans asked him to please not hurt his knees. Now, he is a lot more careful, because he loves his Dears so much.

People are always surprised when first hearing Dimash.....always....(weren't we all?) They say "I wasn't expecting that blah blah blah..." especially when they watch say his SOS performance from the "I am a Singer" Show, they see him and they see an aspiring KPOP artist or something similar and then he upends all their expectations one by one.....it's like the reactions follow a script, the raised eyebrows at the first low note then the goosebumps and disbelief at the staccato high notes and then the gasp, groan or expletive at the crazy mixed belt and so on....Yep you were wrong, most of us were wrong but being wrong was the best right thing I have discovered in my middle years.

What you call "free style" "ethnic touch" in the song is actually Dimash using Kazakh folk music in his runs which is very similar to Arabic yoddle. Much of Kazakhstan's folklore in music and dance is a mix of Asiatic and Middle Eastern influences.
@muratomar6502
@muratomar6502 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Myers's Sis Kazakh ethnic music never had an influence of Arabic or Asian folk music, moreover is different depends on a region of Kazakhstan. The West KZ has more instrumental type of music, Adai (beginning of Daididau at his Bastau) is a pure example of the West style...Daididau itself is closer to the North-East style with its melody and high lyrics. South KZ maybe has some minor influence of the Uzbek melodies but in modern songs.
@ericcoskun1
@ericcoskun1 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, Kazakh folklore and culture is part of the greater Turkic culture which has been around for 8,000 years, predating even the earliest Chinese cultures. So the influence comes from Kazakh/Turkic culture and filters into arabic and Asian cultures.

Heh, heh. I love how Dimash has folks on here discussing the historic cultural influences that have impacted Kazakh music...and this was just him singing a cover of a 30+ year old Lionel Richie song, in English no less, on a Chinese TV show. 😏 Then let's not forget that right now we're all on a metal channel watching him share space with Jenjer! 👹 I'd say this qualifies Dimash as a legitimate ambassador for his country and for music in general. One time is always not enough, although each Dimash's song is love at the first listen. But it's necessary to listen to it again and again... It's amazing - to connect the west with the east like that! When the English "hello" sounds like a call from a minaret - it's almost a revolution in a single vocal piece! Azan of love. Elegant, beautiful and, unexpectedly, such a harmonious move. And the magic flute ... In the final of the song "Mен сені сүйемін" (men seni süyemin) - "I love you" in Kazakh. How does he do that? Somewhere the stars alinged in a right way, so that this boy came into this world, grew up and made us happy. It's just that he is music.

This ranks with my favorite Dimash performances as well. I liked how he gave us a foreshadowing of that massive 4-part run early on....just a little taste of the ethnic sound. And that lovely interlude! Wow! I like to think of it as "floating with Dimash": I could watch that bit over and over. You're right: he never cedes control of the stage or coasts in his performance. No matter if it's his movements or just his eyes, he is fully engaged, communicating with his audience. It's simply amazing to watch. As incredible as his voice is, that mastery of the performance is the thing that seals the deal for me and sets him apart from everyone else.

I'd love to see you react to one of his official music videos. Though he's not singing live on those, the artistry in the videos is amazing. He works with directors that use a lot of symbolism and fantastical styles. Beautiful stuff. Akkuym/My Swan is a beautiful Kazakh song and visually stunning. Love of tired Swans is Amazing vocally and visually. And Know. They're all on his KZfaq.

One day I'd like to hear you do Know and also Ascolta la Voce (which means "Listen to the Voice" in Italian) in a double reaction. They are different songs, but based on the same motif--one with lyrics, and the other with only vocalizations in a way that almost sounds impromptu (though I would imagine it is planned and practiced in advance.) Both are beautiful, and so interesting to compare and contrast. Love your reactions--the comments you make about the lighting, staging, camera angles, etc are very interesting and help to make your reactions unique.

I guess Ascolta la Voce is not practised thoroughly in advance because he always sings it sooo differently in concerts.Last autumn and this spring I heard different versions,no one was the same

@@silviastanescu9312 Ascolta La Voce/Know is meant to be improvised by the singer. They're technically the same song, but Know is the version with lyrics, while Ascolta La Voce is the improvised version.

@@youlleatamuffinandlikeit4596 THX for the info. I always figured it was a bit of both--probably because if I try to completely improvise to music I end up with some really weird harmonies and discords, so I have to plan ahead a little. But of course, we ARE talking about Dimash.

That "smirk" 😏 ...I think in SOS, you nailed it...relief, knowing he had just outperformed himself on a song he had been winning competitions with for years. However, in this case...just based on what I know...China, and Singer show, are profoundly important to Dimash. Though he was moderately successful in competitions prior to 2017, he was still mostly an unknown outside of that arena. China Dears are extra special to him, and the Singer show was also very good to him. So in a way, that look and smile at the end ...to me... speaks of something along the lines of "glad to see you again" or something like it. I don't know for sure though..I haven't managed to figure out that last phrase. But I can guarantee there is nothing remotely arrogant in his gaze or his grin...he is one of the most humble individuals I have ever encountered. 😉

Great reaction as usual. Wonderful to hear that your friend is improving. Today I listen to an opera singer react to Dimash and she said a voice like his can perfectly be considered addictive. He should come with a warning!! 🤣🤣. You may like him singing a Queen medley with the super vocal boys as a guest on the Singer 2018. Also the song he made as a soundtrack for an Italian sci fi movie that has a metal rockish style may be a good option for further reactions. Thanks and till Friday!

Very cool analysis you do as per usual. Love your channel and thoughts. You are super fun to watch. I hope you do Hua Chenyu someday soon, he is a friend of Dimash but also one of the top rock singers in China. He is so interesting as well, but in a different way. He was also on the singer in 2018 and won first runner-up (like Dimash) and just won 2020. His channels has loads of live performances from huge arena concerts. He is, like Dimash, but different styles, also a brilliant performer/artist/composer/philosopher. A good intro to Hua Chenyu is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orKjYJNyld-ppXU.html

You may know he was a contestant on The World’s Best, and bowed out in the third round because the producers had him up against two 12 year olds (including a girl from his home country). Allegedly one of his conditions his agents made for him to participate was to not compete against children. He is just 100% a class act! I recommend you watch his 3 videos from The World’s Best, especially the blow up between him and Ru Paul!!
