MEANING OF “CORALINE” AS TOLD BY DAMIANO It’s our fairy tale, the story of a little girl who can’t find her place in the world because she’s too pure and fragile. It tells, through a sweet melody, a journey that gradually becomes more and more distressing, that seems hopeless. [...] “Coraline” needs a clarification: it’s not the story of the knight saving the damsel in distress. The story ends badly, there is no happily ever after. It’s something real, it’s the withering of this flower, of this girl, and the knight is helpless and powerless in the face of what is happening. As for the name Coraline, it’s not inspired by the cartoon, by the film. The choice of the name is purely musical, phonetic. The story is a real story, one I will not talk about right now, turned into a fairy tale, and everyone can interpret it as they wish.

I respectfully disagree even if Damiano told that. For me, Coraline is a person that has so much power inside her but does not know yet. And you stay by her side until she realizes her full potential. Would that make sense to anybody else??

@@francescgarcia7340 Equally respectfully, I also believe that, while the ending isn't a happy ending, it's not a sad conclusion either. I see an opening to hope, to change, to salvation. Coraline can grow up, she can leave, she can find rescue ... despite her story of her which seems to indicate otherwise. In my humble opinion.

I was going to write exactly the same thing. He's more profound and sensitive than what you might think from the surface. The fact that he carefully reads the lyrics and actually lets them in, that he said this is his favorite Måneskin song (instead of Zitti e buoni, that's more "noisy"), and the fact he doesn't even want to verbally say how Coraline lost her unborn baby... all this reveals something beautiful about this man.

As an Italian who based her studies on Italian language, I’m so happy AND GLAD that no-italians speakers can enjoy so much an Italian lyrics, trying to think it as a value, not a lack of this band! Damiano (the singer) is so much powerful when he sing in italian, it’s sad when I read comments “they have to do an English album to get popular” ... like BRUH wtf I mean I grow up with 99% of the songs in other languages and that doesn’t stop me from loving what I was listening to! This story is a real one, 'Coraline' is a fictional name , they used it as it sounded mysically good , but there was a young girl who was abused sexually and mentally by her father , who got her pregnant and then aborted it , she could not bear the pain and committed suicide which is represented by the word 'Castle' which means a cemetry in italy which looks royal like a castle, Damiano wanted to help her but for some reason she refused the help💔

This song explains quite well how is having mental issues, social anxiety and fighting daily and constantly with your inner monsters. I guess (but I am not sure) the castle mentioned at the end of the song is an asylum, unfortunately. I truly love the middle part where he tries to help and comfort her by understanding what she is feeling inside and being her soldier, her shield and her sword. It's an extremely touching song both musically and lyrically. ❤
@lorenzoamato953

I don't think the castle is a mental asylum, but rather an inner fortress that separates her from the rest of the world, as usual in deeply depressed persons with panic attacks. The whole idea that she wants the sea but is afraid of water points at her dreaming to go "out" somewhere, but being afraid of doing the very first step.

I always thought that the castle is a place or even a symbol for drugs, mostly because 'they told her', as in 'it's rumoured' that there's a place in town where you can numb the pain and build walls around you. When you're numb and high, reality can't touch you. This is just my interpretation though.

This song is painfully wonderful. Ultimately, everyone sees in Coraline what he wants, a person, a feeling, a life experience. The power of works of art lies in being able to touch people in the soul in something personal and unique. I must add, as Italian, that although the English translation is accurate, the Italian lyrics is infinitely richer and deeper because there are some untranslatable expressions and verses in rhyme that make the single words much more musical. For not Italian speakers it could be a good reason to start learning my beloved mother tongue.

It is not only that they performed well in Rotterdam and won. Somehow, they push rock music to a completely different level, because the lyrics are so incredibly deep and genuine. Somehow, this is *not* like the old "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll", or growling fantasy-metal. How can I explain? I am German, and I really really appreciate Damiano singing so beautifully Italian songs. Maybe because I know from so many camp fires that the songs in your own language, especially the meaningful ones, accompanied with the guitar, go directly to the heart. Nothing against English, nothing against metal. It's just - they are different. And they will make a difference in music.

People say she's worth nothing because she was abused. At the end, the castle is a place like a grave, where nothing can hurt you anymore, because you're not in this world no more. Very sad. Hope this helps raise awareness on a thing that sadly happens very frequently around the world!

I lived in Milano for 3 years and then moved to Rome. I learnt Italian and this band was my fav since X-Factor. We we’re driving through the streets of Rome when Coraline started to play. My mother (56) said that this song reminds her of my aunt/Her Sister. They all lived in Rome half of their life, my unalived grandpa was really into alcohol like Whisky, Vodka, Beer, Wine Etc. When he would get drunk he would abuse them Psychically, Mentally and S*xually. They could never get out his grip. But one day my aunt got pregnant(Not because of their father, ofc.) She had a miscarriage in her 3rd month. She could’ve never forgive herself, She didnt eat, She was suicidal, She was afraid of everything. One day, she had enough of it and killed herself. She was buried in the Cemetery Of Rome which is know as the “Castle” in this song. She was born in 1966 and died in 1997 at the age of 31. (My mother and her we’re twins.)

This song is a hidden gem ❤️ whoever they dedicated these lyrics to, they easily speak to you, because sorrow and defeat are something everyone knows. And you feel this s**t deeper when it hits someone you love, because the inability to soothe someone's deep pain is unbearable. This kind of music reminds me Pearl Jam vibes

I have struggled with OCD and anxiety for ages and this song just resonates so much! Cause for example I love being social and at the same time Im afraid of large groups of people. Meaning concerts - I would loooove to go but Im sooooo afraid. "zitti e bouni" is a song "for me", too; I am "fouri di testa" but different than others :D

it's interesting how we can see in a different way a song. For me it tell a story about a girl (with no self-confidense etc.) who has many many issues in her life and her family never even helped her just teach her how to hide her emotions. I'm crying on those lyrics because my family did the same to me. I had to hide all my emotions from everyone (for example: when I was a child they don't let me cry on my grandmother's funeral) until came a guy (thank god) who saved me and teach me how to express myself. So this song means a lot to me. Well I hope my story will endind in a good way.

Coraline is also my favorite song of them, followed up very closely by "Marlena torna a casa". Where Coraline seemed to be inspired by a real person Damiano knew, Marlena represents art and inspiration in general, kind of their muse, I suggest you listen to that song too!

I know many people said that the lyrics at the end is supposed to interpret a suicide but what came first into my mind was the heart itself. Like to take your emotions and keep them safe in heart/castle with strong walls and nobody and nothing will hurt you. But that's how I saw it when I first listened to this song. Everybody can see it differently, even Damiano himself said to interpret it as we wish so I think there are many versions of the meaning for this song. But I really like the one which said that Coraline resembles members of the band. I really like reading what you guys think about this song and each person's pov.

I second all the comments about "In nome del padre", you should definitely listen to it, even if you won't do a video about it. The song that made them famous in Italy is "Torna a casa" and it also has a deeper meaning than it may seem.

This song is a ballad rock about childhood. Coraline was young and nobody trusted her abilities. She was afraid and was hard for her to grow up. She found a man who loved and could trust her, but she didn’t make it. She was not able to overcome her fears, so she imaginary hide herself in a castle, a symbol of a place that could protect her from the entire world

I heard beggin and looked them up on Spotify. I thought they were just another American band at first but as there album followed after that song I was put back that they were singing in another language. It's been 3 days since I listened to them and absolutely love their music. I listen to many different artists in different languages and always end up learning every single lyric in their language even tho I don't know what they fully mean. For example Korean, japanese, Chinese, and German etc. bands or individual singers. I ended up learning g the lyrics for Coraline in a day. I started to sing it around co workers and they thought I knew Italian but I was just singing. Love getting to know new bands with great music.

I love your channel so much! Anyway, I think that the translation you found is not "perfect", so I'll describe what the lyrics is about: 1. Coraline grows up in an abusive family (she's verbally abused) and she's shy and stuggles with anxiety. 2. However, one day she manages to "go out" and starts to face society (she's a teenager now). 3. The "Knight in shining armour" who promises her the whole world tells her to follow him and leave her home and that he loves her. 4. The "knight" broke his promise and she ends up pregnant and loses her baby. 5. Someone suggests to Coraline to go to go to a psychiatric hospital(maybe?). This is the interpretation I gave to the lyrics since it can be read in different ways. Hope it helps!

There's more to it: towards the end the lyrics reveal that the monster abusing her was in fact her own father ( "a father who's nothing like a father") and the child she lost was in fact his ( she was pregnant but "she never knew love"). She eventually ends up in the "castle" ( asylum? cemetery? drugs? hard to tell, but very powerful image nonetheless).

Damiano said in an interview that the knight is helpless in this song, like he can do nothing. I don't think he broke the promise, I think Coraline couldn't follow him because her anxiety and the pressure from her home were too strong for her. "E in cambio non chiedo niente.." seems like he's imploring her to go with him. Damn, chills, again.

Caroline is basically every artists that had a hard childhood and managed to convey her/his feelings into art. True art is a honest expression of universal feelings that most people can relay to. Honest personal songs that convey an universal truth about life are a part of the artist that she/he want’s to share with the world. It’s his/her „truth”. True artists always „spoke their truth” even if they didn’t make money of it or gain recognition, even when money, recognition or their life was on the line.

There are some errors in the translation, but in particular there's one at the end that can mess up the meaning of the text. When at the end it says about the father "... who is father of nothing ...", unless this is some kind of english idiom, this translation is clearly incorrect. The italian words are "che di padre ha niente", which could be translated as "who is nothing like a father". If you put this phrase in the context of the song, this seems to implicate the father on the tragic situation of the protagonist.

oh fuck...... I just realised the implication the lines "she lost the fruit of her womb" and "she has a father who is father of nothing" hold if combined together (and seeing how they are only seperated by 1 other line "she has not known love" ...... oof. Like forreal I hope this isn't based on real stuff and ifso, I hope she's doing a little (just a little) better now.

I thought exactly the same about Coraline and her father... Those lyrics speak clearly. But according to what Damiano said, the story has not an happy ending and the "castle" is the graveyard. In Rome (where they are from and live) there's actually a cemetery whose gates look like those of a castle. Also Damiano said the story is real but doesn't want to talk about it.

They've said it does not have a good ending and is based on a real story. Those lines can mean a variety of things in my opinion (i.e. could also be that her father left her early in life and as a result she ended up in an abusive relationship with a partner, as often happens...) but none of them are good...

The "castle with poweful walls" he tells about at the end of the song are meant like a tombstone. I'm afraid it didn't end well and the pain finally broke her. This song rips my soul... they're so young but they have a huge sensitivity. I love them.

I regret that I found those guys soo late, and that it required a show that I do not watch. Usually, the songs on Eurovision are not my taste, too clean and boring. But this year was surprisingly good and I liked several artists and performances. So even if am late this time, these guys are still so young and I hope there are still many songs coming and concerts to enjoy. Another favorite that I found during this C-business is already quite old, and I think that I will not manage too see them live, which is quite a shame.
