It's a commentary on the American Dream, the shallow pursuits of American life and the real cost to everyone outside of America who are exploited by war, shady business practices and bullying by the American government - in order to sustain the dream. The song was and is controversial in America, but was embraced by success everywhere else. Great reaction.

If you want to see a more recent version of Madonna still pushing buttons with social commentary I'd recommend "God Control" from her most recent album "Madame X" (2019). Madonna pulled the original director's cut last minute for fear of retaliation and being perceived as unpatriotic as America was bracing for War, and because the Dixie Chicks were cancelled just prior. So she originally aired this video with a tame version of her singing only behind flags and pretty much all the imagery removed. She was 44 at the time. Past 40, and American radio shadow banned her regardless, her career never reached the popularity of her younger years since. She has never been one to back down from offending and sharing her point of view but this was the first time in her career she blinked.

Also highly recommend you check out her live concert performances. Starting in 1989 with her Blond Ambition tour, she revolutionized concerts making them much more theatrical. Now everyone does what she started 35 years ago. Love that you are taking the time to analyze her lyricism as well, which is something that is often missed by a lot of reactors.

This song and video have several different meanings. First, she's saying nothing is free. Everything we have has come at a cost of other peoples lives. Next, is how people take what they have for granted and how a lot of people live very superficial lives, not caring that we have soldiers d i e i n g and k i l l i n g, even young innocent children, while we are going about our lives like nothing is happening. Lastly, she is saying, yes Im a star, that has all this sht, have made it, lived the "so-called" American dream but, these things bother her, dont make her happy and they should bother us as well. Basically, wake tf up. She came out with this album after Bush invaded I r a q, based on a lie. She was pssd off, just like a lot of the country was at the time.

G'day it's Steven from down under again Madonna has always been supportive of minorities even before it became popular and the world became "woke". As per usual she used her celebrity to bring controversial issues to the attention of many. Never afraid to speak her mind and hopefully educate the masses in the process whilst creating timeless musical art. Unfortunately I recall at the time she was heavily and in my opinion unfairly criticsed for being "un-American" for speaking out in this song regarding the war the US was involved in. I think there's a lot of desensitized people in the world, particularly when there are wars and suffering, we no longer care as much as we should. ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF POP!

If you like the acoustic guitar, you'll probably like "Don't Tell Me." The video is cool too.

If I remember correctly that rap part was made in tongue in a cheek kinda way. It was a trend you really couldn’t have a song played on a radion unless you had a rap verse on it. So what she did was sort of a joke, like alright I’m gonna do it myself. That song and the video was a strong statement on American dream: what is that dream built on and with what cost. One of her best videos I think.

And another thing that woman just last year grossed 2.5 billion dollars she knows the sacrifices that she had to make and if it wouldn’t be for Madonna the Britney’s and Christina’s wouldn’t be singing today she paved the way for for all the ones after her and I know people that have worked with her and they say that she’s a bitch to work with and she has that right for what she’s become and is she’s always braking the boundaries 💯🥰

Definitely her most underrated and unappreciated album. I think it's her best. Does seem to be gaining more respect & understanding as time goes on. The reaction to the title track & her opinion to the Iraq war totally impacted on her career. The songs x static process, and especially Intervention are absolutely beautiful. The only dud is die another day. Doesn't belong. But the album was so far ahead , as always for Madonna.

As a Madonna fan who loves watching people discover her through reactions, many of us have a “meh” response to reactors choosing this song. lol. It’s a misunderstood album for sure. And it has its merits don’t get me wrong. But it’s not the best collection of her songs for reacting to on the internet. Maybe try “Nothing Fails” from this album? Not sure I’d recommend anything else except maybe “Die Another Day” which most other fans hate so 🤷🏻‍♂️
