This is based on James Hetfield growing up in a family whose religion was Christian Science. They believed in God would heal, provide guidance, and protect you if you did everything for him. It also kept him from being able to go to science class or play football. When his mom was sick with cancer he watched her rot away and die. She never went to get treatment believing prayer and her beliefs would save her. This was right after his father walked on the family. This song is his bitter note letting them know how they made him feel

Favorite song off my favorite album. 👍 IMO, Kirk’s best solo.....It’s multilayered, using just about all strings and the entire neck of the guitar. That transition from the end of that solo into that galloping riff is killer.

This is the ultimate "we all went off" type song. Lars is riding the drums, Kirk is going ballistic, James is yelling at his parents, and poor Jason is over in the corner not realizing Lars unplugged his amp. Fucking banger song 🔥🔥🤘🤘

Yea man... I got this album when it came out. I was in 6th grade. My cousin and I would crank it to 10 and headbang non stop the whole album. It's cool seeing people appreciate it like I did in the 80's. Although, now that I understand Hetfield's lyrics and background more I appreciate it more than ever. It amazes me you see people saying Metallica sucks. IMO, everyone should put respect on James and the boys name.

This song hits home to me and it's dope that you took the time to really listen and understand the lyrics. It's a masterpiece and the world needs more people like you. Open minded and listening. Great job

Dyer's eve and Damage,Inc are the two most agressive songs from metallica. Both the last song from the two consecutive albums, is not coincidence i guess. Adding to this that the first song of each albums are the second most agressive songs of the albums. Blackened and Battery. They followed the same kind of "formula". The song before the last are aswell non-lyrics cliff relational songs. Even more, the both second songs are the album-named songs. Just a bit of analysis, i didnt see anyone noticing.

It is basically about overly strict parents. They constantly beat this child down with rules of behavior without letting him make his own mistakes. When he is grown he doesn't know how to cope without being told what to do. It is about the rage towards the parents who failed him.

I immediately subscribed when I heard the word "jazz." I thought to myself, "Oh,. this should be fun." The book end to this lyrically and thematically is "Moma Said" off of Load... and yes, that is the same band playing those two completely different songs.

James' parents were christian scientists. I remember James saying he suffered from bad headaches and when he went to live with his half brother he was given an aspirin for his headache and he felt like he was doing something bad when he took the aspirin. Ironic that he has ended up in rehab several times for substance abuse.

Just one word describe this song: rancor... tu-ru-tu-ru-tu-ru-tu-ru.... all angry you can think is contained in their riffs and lyrics. The solo is faster until overpowering you and throw you to floor. Also, probably is the most complex, harder and amazing on the Kirk's repertory.

I like watching you enjoy the music that moved me so long ago... my parents listened to Black Sabbath and C.C.R. with an older sister big on Kiss back in the 70's... then the birth of Metallica in the early 80's... times were much diffrent back then... where most people thought metal musicians were simply screaming, and smashing their musical instruments, with no musical talent... such arrogant fools 😎 I wish I could see the smug look on their stupid - idiotic - faces today 😝 on second thought... I'd rather not 🤢
