I had the great privilege of exchanging a few words with Ray Burton when Metallica played the last very show at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City. Ray Burton still made sure to attend some of the band's most important shows in their career and that one was part of that. I said to him that it was an honour to shake his hand and that his son had had such a tremendous influence on me. He took the time to talk to me and he wished me and my children all the best even though I was just some average bloke. I'll never forget that night,

8th grade talent show..the kids told me "Dude..get a bass, an amp, and a distortion pedal and you will sound like Cliff Burton"....so many tears later I got a bass, an amp, a distortion pedal and....I didn't sound like Cliff. : ( Ok, so maybe 20yrs later or so...ok I get it...Cliff was special. ha! \m/ RIP Cliff, love you man...you got me started in music because I was challenged to be you. 34yrs later and I don't think I sound like you Cliff but your influence in some of my playing is there and will always be there. : ) All these decades later Cliff was the embodiment of so many players...Cliff was The Ramones, Lemmy, and Geezer all combined....

I remember when my brother was listening to Metallica cassettes all day long back in the 90's. That's where my first spark of love for metal started. And Orion, even back then, was my #1 favorite. It's got such storytelling, without words, epicness, without any descriptions, it hit me instantly. And to this day, now over 25 years later, it's still my favorite Metallica track.

I have a visceral reaction to Orion in particular, but I've never seen anyone as moved as in this video. Cliff was a master, a once in a generation talent. One can only wonder how he would have changed music and grown had he still been with us!

@@HalfLifeSistah kia ora (hello) sister your welcome. And the thanks go out to you guys keep doing your thing. Music can be one of the best or worst emotional triggers depending on how it effects your memory or whatever it is it can be a time machine taking you instantly back to a room/place in the past just like a smell can take you to back grandma's house cooking or whatever. Just let ya emotion's out so they are not building pressure inside you and POP out in every direction totally uncontrollably . And my friends sometime when/if you get the time please check out THE CITY NEWTON BOMBER'S live at Galatos song to check out is LOOKING PRETTY GOOD FOR THE NEW YEAR or the whole gig and if you like a little bit of Punk Rock Missing Teeth's song THE PLAGUE live at New Zealand Punk fest 2007 it's a really good recording and video and it's exactly what a Punk band/gig is all about. I’m still amazed to this day that the first time I heard Orion, I thought that after hearing it, that the recording engineer just pushed record while the band was in the studio just jamming away between songs. I mean, seriously, the tempo changes. How could one not think that? Blew my mind to find out that this was a written masterpiece. Still blown away to this day and I’ve been a Metallica fan for what seems like forever.

Thank you so much for showing Cliff such love and respect. He was a master of his craft and was taken from us so soon, but the brief moment we had with him will stay with us forever. His impact on metal and bassists cannot be understated. He showed the world that a bass could be so much more than a background accompanying instrument. Rather that it could do that and also be at the forefront with beautiful and powerful solos that have stood the test of time. Seeing this video nearly brought me to tears myself seeing Sistah crying for Cliff broke my heart. Thank you for sharing.

I think Cliff would be amazed that in 2023 there are so many people in the world that love and respect him and miss him. Metallica went on to do amazing things but can you imagine the music they would have written with Cliff... although then we wouldn't have some of the awesome songs Jason had input to but still...

No matter what day, no matter what year. I miss Cliff so much. Yeah, Metallica blew up into what it is now, but imagine if Cliff wasn't taken so early in the bands years. Imagine if he was still with is, what Metallica would have became. The stuff from Load until now would not exist, because Cliff wouldn't take his foot off the petal to slow down. He would've slammed his foot on the gas and blazed forward. Lars may not have been able to keep up, but I bet Kirk and James may have been able to. Rest easy, Cliff. Enjoy playing with Dio and Lemmy. That will be one he'll of a concert!

I just found your channel tonight and gotta say….I love you two. I was fortunate enough to have seen Metallica 4x in 4 different States and with all 3 bassists. I saw Cliff open for OZZY in Phoenix, AZ 4 months and 1 week before he died. Then I saw Jason in 1989 in Anchorage, AK and again in 1994 in Des Moines, IA. My last show was with Robert in 2018 in Lincoln, NE (which btw is on KZfaq in it’s 2 hour and 25 minutes entirety. Just sayin’ in case you’d like to check it out). When you were saying he only would’ve gotten better, I was thinking same with Randy Rhoads who was 25 when he died in 1982. Anyhow, I loved this reaction. The only thing I’d suggest differently is to play her the studio version of Anesthesia but let that last note continue directly into Whiplash for her. Also play her Blackened live in Seattle in 1989 and then follow it up with Blackened 2020. The 2020 version is Covid-19 style where all 4 members are at their own homes but are playing together via a Zoom Meeting. It’s my new favorite version of the song. Absolutely love it!!! Thank you and keep up the great work

I already had a ticket for the concert in Düsseldorf (Germany) in October 1986, which would have been my overall first concert, but due to this tragic accident it wasn't meant to be.
