Metallica - Orion (Cliff Burton Bass Really Loud)

This is my version of "Orion". I mixed it using Reaper and mastered it using T-Racks CS. This is part of my "Burton of Puppets" project, I'm actually uploading all Burton songs I can find in mogg format, that way I can mix the bass as loud as I want to.
This sounds as if Metallica were a power trio, so whenever Kirk plays a guitar solo, Cliff is the only one providing foundation, rhythm and harmony to the song. This actually turns James into a lead singer only type of role, and I love James but I think that with this type of line-up, Cliff's work can really shine and stand out in the mix.
If you add a rhythm guitar, things get cluttered and the bass disappears. And my goal here is for us to hear every single note Cliff is playing. So the volumes are all switched. When we hear guitars on a record, they're always much louder than the bass, and this is our revenge! Here the bass is the star!! And Cliff deserves that, his arrangements are simply beautiful and shouldn't be buried in the mixdown, so please listen to it as many times as you want and promote it away.
How as able to do that? I had access to the original isolated tracks, so that way I felt free to mix them and highlight the sections I thought were richer to the whole project. That meant cutting off some of James' guitar parts during Kirk's solos, and leaving Lars out of the spotlight cause he mixes his drums super duper loud since he's the leader of the band. That way, Cliff's bass line came to life and the song sounds amazing!

If you can imagine it, then play it. That's what being a musician is. Then it's yours and you can share it. What you're saying is be inspired by him. I can agree with that. I won't give credit for things that never happened though. Lars and James are still alive and look how that turned out..... (they did have a few decent ones but went downhill)

Woke up to go to work in 1986, turned on the radio to 105.5 KNAC, and the DJ said Cliff had died in a bus accident. I was devastated..... I was lucky enough to see Cliff in Metallica at the Long Beach area when they opened for Ozzy. Not too long after, was lucky enough to see Metallica at Jezebel's in Anaheim trying out Jason. Both those concerts were under $20. What a time to be alive.

The subtleties he came up with added a special touch to every Metallica song that Cliff contributed to, and that is what made the first three albums so amazing and original. That part and the bass solo later on are overdubs. If you listen closely Cliff is still playing the root notes underneath from his main take, otherwise the low-end of the track would suddenly thin out when he goes high up on the neck. No doubt he could’ve pulled the whole song off in one take, but it’s a good production choice to keep the low-end consistent

Cliff was a great bassist yes but, I think what defines his greatness more is his abilities with writing music/his influence on Metallica upon helping them write stuff, Puppets AND Lightning vs Kill em all, and his stage presence. He was an overall innovator in metal history. Burton was classically trained just as Randy Roads. He studied music as Randy did and brought more substance to metal. Not just being limited to only fast thrash riffs. He knew slow parts give contrast to faster parts, making them seem heavier. Burton like Randy was a music composing genius on par with the likes of people like Bach and Beethoven in the classical world. Lightning and Puppets would never have came to pass without him.

I have to admit that years ago whem I first listened to Orions individual instrument tracks I thought the playing was kinda sloppy... I recently bought a bass (I play guitar), and wanted to learn some songs on bass and gave Orions a chance. boy SO little did I know, this song is hard to play properly... what seems to sound relatively easy on guitar, turns out that keeping up with the same riff but on bass is actually very fucking hard, the galoping is a four hit thing, not 3... so one of the fingers HAS to hit twice quite fast. Talk about hittin myself in the mouth with a brick. NEW FOUND respect, I was so ignorant.

\\DEM-GTR// I think that's the point of the video. Ridiculously loud bass.

IN an ideal mix, all instruments should be equally as loud and should be clearly defined

That's why I love distortion bass. You can make it stand out without having to overpower it. You just put your clean layer where it should be and then mix the dirty layer at taste.

As weeks, months pass on playing this repeatedly (pardon, just a recent fan), it is slowly becoming a surprise this is "only" eight-and-a-half minutes! In modern and even today's times, he made the bass really, really cool onto respective levels as guitar in thrash metal standards. James Hetfield pondered why he chose the bass (coming from a great guitarist himself, Cliff can play the guitar if he chose to). Now on hindsight and retrospect, Cliff and Metallica are meant to be together, much to appreciation of old, newbies (ahem), and soon-to-be fans/admirers. Cliff said he'll become the best bassist for his brother Scott. He absolutely fulfilled that, and perhaps even way beyond expectations critics have no room but to rave praises.

In my opinion one of the true rock gods! I was very lucky to have met Cliff shortly before his passing in Birmingham backstage at the Odeon on the Master Of Puppets tour in September 86. I know how excited I was meet James but Cliff was the coolest one in the room by far! Sat there not saying much at first but we ended up having a really good conversation about loads of random bands. At least he’s up there and Lemmy is keeping him company till we all get there!! 🤘
