In this video we'll watch Metallica's Most VIEWED SONG, with music theory analysis. Does Nothing Else Matters really deserve 1 billion KZfaq views...or is there another explanation? Is Metallica really the best metal band ever? Perhaps an in depth analysis of their song structure will reveal the truth. Metallica's simple approach to songwriting seems to resonate with more people than Megadeth's...and for that matter any other metal band in existence. Metallica is the best selling metal band of all time. Do they deserve this title? Filmed at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA on November 6, 2021

The reason this is the most popular metallica song is probably because it caters to multiple audiences. It has a soft classical intro a little heavy section at the end. This is like a transition to metal for people who don't normally listen to metallica or metal

To answer your question Elton John recently called Nothing Else Matters the greatest song ever written & it very understandably made James Hetfield tear up a bit… but, I think that could have contributed to pushing a newer larger audience to the song/Metallica.

@@deandrefinley4851 again, Captain Semantics the sentiment is exactly the same whether the two sentences are the same or not. I am not disagreeing with you rather I am pointing out that it really doesn’t matter because the sentiment is exactly the same & either one would have had the exact same impact on Hetfield. Hetfield likely would have teared had Elton John actually called it “the greatest song ever” just as he did when Elton John said it “was one of the greatest songs ever written, to me.” So at the end of the day yes they’re two different things that mean almost exactly the same thing and would have had exactly the same impact & meaning to James. Anyway, take it easy, stay healthy & be well.

Shred dropping some fucking life truth bombs in this one. I remember in high school I would listen to this song and loved the meaning of it. As I grew up, I still carved my own path but sometimes it was hard not to be envious of some of the things offered by the road well-traveled. This last year or so, now in my mid 30s, I've really embraced the path I have taken. It's been a hard path, but my life is much richer for it. This song, and especially this version, really hit deep again, probably more than ever before. Some real life advice from James. I'm glad I had the strength to live life my way. "Couldn't be much more from the heart. Forever trust in who you are. And nothing else matters." And Lars' cymbals at the end...damn

Man they are on of the most popular metal bands ever they already went far since the 80s transitioning into the 90s with their self titled album “Metallica” which happens for this song to be on there. They made it big when they first went on tour for their debut “Kill Em’ All and so forth. After they went mainstream and sold hella records on “Load” “Reload” and “Garage Inc”. They still release music to this day and they are extremely wealthy as a marketer of Thrash Metal and trying out new Blues/Stoner/Heavy Metal approach. Also it looks like you named yourself “Bad Seed” a successful hit on their 1997 album “ReLoad” but that maybe coincidental. Anyway I very much recommend listening to their first 4 albums they are extremely Influential for a Thrash Metal movement.

I have played guitar for about 25 years and I have never studied music theory, other than basic chords, reading tablature and I do understand the basic song structure. I like to keep it that way. When listening to music I don't feel like digging too much into the details. In some way ignorance is bliss in this case. I do pick out instruments and focus mainly on guitar since that's my thing. I think you can have Metallica fans that don't necessarily have a very trained year and wouldn't differentiate necessarily between songs like enter sandman and say Master of puppets, necessarily. I think the appropriate comparison on Master of puppets to enter sandman would be the things that should not be, one of their other songs that really just survives throughout with one riff. And those people will say they like Metallica and it's fun to listen to and it pumps them up and stuff like that. But the more trained listener or maybe more hard-working listeners the way to say it, is going to understand those really symphonic compositions that are put together by Metallica and why they're different like Master of puppets or most of Injustice For All and really a lot of Ride the lightning. But for the average listener there's really no differentiation there it's loud it's heavy it's fast. It's to me why growing up I could never understand why people universally knew moonlight sonatas first movement whether it was more in pop culture or whatever it was a song that people knew when they heard it and if you played in the third movement or even the second movement which has some of the greatest parts in my opinion, they would have never guessed that it was part of the same song nor will they probably like it as much as that first movement. So sometimes Metallica puts out of first movement song like nothing else matters straying away from songs that are more like a minor version of the second movement or the chaotic nature of the third movement but that's where they're die hards fans are. As you stated and as is the case with most Metallica songs you see often times a bare Bones riff or strumming of the or picking of the guitar start off a song and then have it layered as more complex more complex and more complex. Now something like creeping death I would have a hard time trying to make a Metallica fan out of someone who hates metal by playing them creeping death but I would cue up something like sanitarium which I think more than holds it's own with one as the heaviest "ballads" they play. Back to the point with all of those songs you see a progression of layers added on basically tastefully and very well done versus a lot of the bands you hear that go right into that double kick and chugging which Metallica can do, but you know don't live or die by it really. So Sabbath bloody Sabbath I think has the undeniable heaviest section of any song ever written and those that know the song probably know what I'm talking about. But the reason I think it comes off as, I and I really do believe it's sort of the heaviest section ever, is because it's bookended by these more melodic sections of that song. And I think it's the blatant contradiction between the two parts that makes things sound so great. Now there's not a lot off of St anger that I like but I remember being instantly drawn to all within my hands which has that sort of soft verse section then it goes a little bit harder but then when it leads into the all within my hands part of the chorus where the breakdown on the guitar is which I will argue is one of the strongest breakdowns by Metallica on any song, it leads in with a softer sort of clear tone and then it's just pummeled by that part. Whatever that's called creating contradiction or tension within a song or you know hurting the ear and then pleasing it or whatever Metallica is by far the best band and doing that but, I still say that Sabbath bloody Sabbath part is just a meanest example of that

(7:29) I've always played it in A Minor, sounds more natural to me. Actually, I think the whole song is on E Eolian.

It's a great song, simple yet there is more than meets the eye (that's open when you sleep). It was coached outta James' gut and produced by the King of Hard Rock Hits...Bob Rock, who is a helluva guy! Cheers!!

What's up with Kirk's right hand at 1:44...? I can't tell if that's some type of support over his knuckles, or if that's his actual skin. It looks strange.

15:30 It depends why are you making music? It's philosophical. For example I don't see it as an ultimate goal for a song to reach and be liked by every person on this planet. If it can reach one and provoke emotion I was trying to portray, for me that a success.

I would agree. The attitude of "nothing else matters" is a bit nihilistic. Everything should matter if an artist were to expand. As an afterthought, does dark matter "exist?" Hm-hm-hm-ha-ha-ha!

You know what's weird. I've never listened to more than a minute of this song. But I've listened to all the harder ones mostly. Now that I'm older I'm listening to you give your opinion of it. I can see what you mean. But I've always liked everything so I didn't need the transition style I wanted hard melodic music from Metallica so when I heard that it was odd for me.

I’m pretty sure that Les Paul was Lindsey Buckinghams. I could be totally wrong but I recall Kirk in an interview saying that les paul was famous and for some reason I’m recalling him saying it’s Lindsey Buckinghams. Again could be miles off but my memory is being jogged for some reason.

Since when is success and doing what YOU want to do become wrong and selling out? When you have a job, you are expected to be successful or you won't have said job long. Metallica did what they wanted, when they wanted, and how they wanted to do it without thought of what their peers thought or the backlash they would receive. Much respect to Metallica and all that live their lives that way.

If you turn the minor triad in the intro into a major triad, Metallica becomes Manowar. On the video: love those occassional burps while a well-educated guy elaborates on music theory. When I was a tutor for law in university, this would have brought my teaching to a new level. As for the question why people do not like metal, I think it is because they are stupid f@#$. This is not a matter of taste but of intelligence and education. Most stupid people I know listen to mainstream and among the people I know listening to metal, the smart ones are overrepresented.

The Black album is their heaviest on a more emotional and atmospheric scale. Nothing else Matters is a beautiful song. Enter Sandman is great but the first 100 times is enough listening to it. The Unforgiven proves my first statement.
