Joseph Boer I'm not talking about their playing, I'm talking about their gear. Their current sound is terrible, it sounds weak and the distorion muddy instead of how they used to sound so heavy and the distortion was crystal clear. Lars' white kit sounded amazing too, why did he change it?

Films could capture colored video at 4K back in the 70's. The displays weren't even close to 4K at the time so we can only see them in their best quality today. Some even claim that when 8K resolution becomes more mainstream, old films from 70's and later could be viewed at nearly 8K. There is Pink Floyd's 1988 concert go search it up and it's nearly 4K on KZfaq because it was recorded on a 35 mm film, the highest quality film. Thats insane. Anyways I love video quality shit so I invaded thiis comment with weird stuff but I hope I enlightened you.

ironically, that better tech is why it sounds weaker. Today they use a lot of processing and virtualization to achieve a more "consistent and even" sound. Better at the board and cleaner for working on later for live records and such. BUT, a byproduct of this is you lose a lot of the power and variance. Maybe for jazz or an orchestra that's better? But not for metal. I too miss the old days when it was less filtered and more raw.
