One of their most underrated songs such a dirty groovy bassline and a kickass riff james hetfield wrote it about how his mother refused treatment for her cancer since she was a Christian scientist if i remember correctly

*_"The healing hand held back by the deepened nail"_* - I feel like something got skewed during the analysis. The healing hand is a reference to modern medicine and not to Jesus. It is held back by the deepened nail, which is a reference to religion.

When James was young, because his family were Christian Scientists, he wasn’t allowed to go to science or health classes.. he would have to leave when it was time for that subject. It made him feel judged by his classmates and it was embarrassing for him. In the Metallica behind the music episode he explains all of it. This song is about his frustrations with his mother not seeking treatment for her cancer and his anger when she eventually died from it. “Healing hand held back by the deepened nail” , she refused treatment because of her religion.

When I showed this song to my Christian friend in 1991, he was way so Pissed and did not talk to me for about 2 years.. Tried to tell him it's not a song that about badgering the Christian faith but about how Jaymz felt when his mum decided to put her faith in her religion in curing her sickness..

Charlie Keeler true story. I wonder what his “higher power” is? He often mentions it in interviews, but never discloses what it actually is. I don’t think he likes people to know his political or religious alliances because he doesn’t want those things to define him. He wants his music to do the talking. It’s still something that makes me curious, especially given how against the Christian Science community he is.

eere3343 don’t let your emotions get the best of you. As human we all live with emotion and chose to understand the things that makes the most sense to us. Instead we should learn to trust God even when we don’t understand why we are going thru this hell, remember there’s alway a light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes God strengthen us thru those hard times.. You should listen to August burns red, for today, wolves at the gate. To help strengthen your faith. And don’t listen to the lies of the enemy who fills you with doubt, remember his desire is to separate you from God. Remember the greatest trick the devil did was convincing the world he doesn’t exist and God is the root of all problems. And by the way things look, he has convinced a great multiple of people. Stay strong bro I’ll be praying for you.

This is a recurring theme for James as you also see in Holier Than Thou and Leper Messiah (2 others you should review). Not that he is angry at Christianity, but at the Christian churches and the corruption of their flock. The churches essentially preying on their members like a business, guilting people into attending and contributing and instilling a sense of righteousness in the members that is projected outward through virtue signaling. They took and felt pride while kneeling in church, but not pride in the actual word or love of god. They are prideful simply for attending. A child to save. They are prideful for sponsoring the needy. Not a horrible thing in itself, but in the context, they are seeing themselves as more virtuous than others, or only do the sponsoring so that they can feel more virtuous. He sees faith in their eyes but they will not admit to their motives/ not hearing the lies. Jesus' job was to bring love to everyone and bring his flock to his father, and his word has been corrupted by the church and man into focusing on making themselves feel superior to others because they show up to churches on Sundays. His healing hand was held back by man's flaws of pride and vanity. He has failed to convey the actual message to his own followers.

This song was definitely fueled by his mothers death but i get more of a feeling about his distaste for organized religion in general and the hypocritical nature of church goers who apparently are missing the point of the lessons given in the bible, or are being misled by the church leaders.
@johnbon6
@johnbon6 6 жыл бұрын
Actually not true at all. Leper Messiah: People who lie about their connection with god for power and influence to people who are easily preyed upon who need to feel secure in their belief in god. Holier Than Thou: Generalization of anyone who feels they're better than you or above you and offers advice on how you can be like them. TGTF: About his Mother's cancer and how Christian Science kept her from getting treatment and how it ended up betraying her and leaving him on his own as a kid cause his parents split. Not an overall statement on God, but how Christian Science as a whole failed and a belief system for someone so devoted.
@jonw695
@jonw695 6 жыл бұрын
i acknowledge that the song was inspired by the events of his mother's death, but the word choice in this song to me points to the position of a church member who has faith but not necessarily understanding the point of faith or the message of the bible. as mentioned in my original post, the first verse really lays it out that they took pride, felt pride while preying, but immediately following that was "not the word, not the love." to me that says they are prideful simply by attending church but not fully understanding the message. As for the other 2 songs, i agree with your analysis and covered that in my 2nd and 3rd sentences.
@johnbon6
@johnbon6 6 жыл бұрын
"Not the word, not the love" is followed by "Not what you thought from above". It means that despite their devout belief in God, based on the message they'd taken to, they never received any of it back to them from god. In Christian Science, the belief and "healing" they give you is preventative to keep you illness free, which wasn't true, she had cancer. Then they say it's mind over matter (All illness in Christian Science is thought to be all just made up and because you believe you have it, you'll manifest it and that if you're sick you can do the same by believing you're not or you're thought of as weak and not worthy of god), and that if god loved you and you were true in your belief enough, he'll heal you, he didn't, she died.

The reason I got was the pope at the time reasoned saying bless you to fight off a plague to heal you so I personally never say bless you I understand it to be nothing more than a social thing to say to be a nice person. I may sound odd I just think why say it just to say it?

I find the saying of it to be annoying. Someone sneezes, and you say, "God bless you". Then a minute later they sneeze again, and again in another few minutes. How many times do I need to say it? And then when I sneeze, and someone says it to me, now I have to say "thank you". And if I sneeze again, and they say it again, I have to say "thank you" again. So I don't bother saying it at all anymore.

enerpro - When someone uses the term "Sell out" it isn't being used as a measurement of success. When you say that someone sold out, you are saying they changed their approach to cater to the masses in order to sell more and make more money. Sonically, and lyrically... I don't consider this song much of a departure from what they had previously done. Like I said, not much different between this song and Harvester of Sorrow.

This song reminds me of an old joke.. where a man is trapped on his rooftop during a flood with rising floodwaters.. along comes a rowboat.. the guy in the boat offers to rescue the man, who declines, saying "God will save me..." later, the waters have reached the edge of the roof and a motorboat stops by, offering to take the man to shore. The man again declines, stating again that God would save him. Later, the waters have reached midway up the roof, and a helicopter arrives, lowering a rescue basket.. but yet again the man declines, placing his faith in God to save him. So.. the waters continue to rise and the man is swept away and drowns. In the afterlife he goes before God and asks why God did not save him... to which God replied : "I sent two boats and a helicopter..." Peace

I think non-believers "deny" the existence of miracles because of the religious connotations. In my experience, when Christians speak of miracles, their definition of "miracle" includes that they are "god-driven", for lack of a better term. Now since we don't believe in God, we reject their definition of miracle, we deny the existence of god-driven miracles. What we don't deny (or at least I don't know anybody that does) are instances in which people are healed *miraculously*. Sure we can't explain why they pulled through against all odds, but that doesn't make God a reasonable option. It could have been many things that we don't understand yet, why would God get special treatment here? Some people are just extremely lucky I guess. Great reaction once again! I'm still hoping for some Rammstein though! That translation offer is still on the table. ;)

I'd love to see your reaction to "The Prophet's Song" by Queen. Queen did not shy away from religious songs, indeed their first album had a song titled "Jesus" which was about the sermon on the mound. Its worth checking out too, but "The Prophet's Song" is a stunning piece of music which also celebrates a biblical story.
