The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family. He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man. James Hetfield is The Unforgiven.

I am so glad that lars ulrich gave my dad his drumsticks, A few months after he got it, he sadly passed away by brain cancer tier 5. Before he passed away, he gave me the sticks and said: Boy, please swear to god that you dont sell it or gave it to someone. For me its more worth then everything in this world. I miss you dad😢 R.I.P 18.09.2020🕊️

These guys have no clue how many lives they've saved with their music, including mine. Spent so many years of my earlier days wanting to kill myself, but came home every day to listen to these guys. Even at 34, the feeling are still their, but we have others relying on us. Thank you metallica for keeping me here

I became a Metallica fan in 86 when I was twelve. In 99 when i was 25 I met a young woman who had gotten in to Metallica in the late 90s and they were her favorite group. It was a long distance relationship, she was the love of my life. One of my favorite memories was when i got the chance in 2000 to go visit her, she lived on the other side of the country, I'm East Coast, she was West, I brought Master of Puppets with me and introduced her to Orion and the Metallica I had fallen in love with. Then in 2001 I went to see her again and she broke my heart. Told me when i got there it was over. Turned me around and put me back on a plane home the next day. I was never a fan of Reload and just yesterday I heard this on Lithium on Sirius and realized 19 years later how relevant the lyrics are. I'm still trying to find the sun and bury the key and forgive. I don't know why it took me this long to connect with this song out of all the others in their catalogue. But better late than never. God I can feel every line in this song.

Sometimes it’s hard to let go. I can still feel the emotions from 20 years ago. And even more recent relationships gone foul. I’m sorry for your loss but time will heal that. The only way out is through. So I’ve come to know.

Mate, i know how you feel.... with a few of my ex's - i feel exactly the same, like there's no proper closure. Just "Yep, we're done now P off!!" And all you can keep thinking is what the hell did i do wrong? Sometimes i wish i could go back and change events to keep the relationship going. But then you need to also remember this "Things happen for a reason - if a relationship is meant to end, it's because you've learnt the lesson needed in life or a better one is around the corner"

@@seNor916x4, does it have to be the same level? Great songs are hard to cime close to. (And also note Metallica has done a lot of grear stuff.) If Led Zeppelin had did another Heaven song, would the world expect it to be the same high level as Stairway To Heaven? We know things cannot be retutned to. So Unforgiven 3 may not be as good as 2 which isn't as good as 1, but who cares? They're all good.

I feel like there's a lot of underrated Metallica songs. I hate it when people automatically think of nothing but heavy metal when they hear or see the word "Metallica". I'm a Metallica fan, and I love their heavier songs like "Master of Puppets", "Enter Sandman", and all those other heavy and fast songs, but I also like their slower and softer songs too like this one, "Nothing Else Matters", and "Fade to Black". It's because these songs have true meanings, and they prove that Hetfield can deliver beautiful tone when he sings too, not just singing in his metal voice all the time!

I remember when this first came out and my grandmother was fighting cancer and she battled for 2 years until she passed in 1999 and I felt so bad cause I used to fight with her when I was little and argue with her and always disagree with her. In 2010, when I was 12 years old, I was listening to music on my MP3 with an older friend of mine. He said that if I wanted, he could take my MP3 and load it with good songs. He took the mp3 full of hit songs of that time, uploaded the entire Metallica didskography and brought it back. He gave me the mp3 back the next day early in the morning. During the first lesson of the day at school, I got curious and started listening to it by putting on headphones. The first song that opened was Metallica Unforgiven II. The mp3 did not have a screen so I could not see the song and band names, but I remember that as soon as the song ended, I asked the teacher to go to the toilet and left the classroom. I know that I will never forget that day when I sat on the toilet, put on my headphones and listened to this song 4-5 times in a row. Even though I didn't know any English and I was 12 years old, nothing in my life had ever touched me as much as this song. Now, I am 25 years old now. I understand that if this song had not been uploaded to that MP3 that day, everything in my life would have been completely different. I realized that the only beauty that remained and did not change from those days was my family and metallica. The two seem indistinguishable from each other. thank you
