Very real so true. When the black album came out it was no where near at the time as earlier more as who I was at the time. Now it's genius. And experience of life so a bit more knowledge. Experience is knowledge and that's ours individually for all. Before it's more someone said this and that's how we see it. 👍😁All the best to all is my go. Life's short the saying goes. James Hetfield of Metallica wrote 'The Unforgiven' about his parents... He had endured a difficult childhood under Christian science beliefs, his father left the family, and then his mom died from cancer after refusing treatments for her beliefs... It was hard becoming an introverted adult and discovering that the world in their view was a lie, and lead him to a path of alcohol abuse and reckless behavior... especially in Metallica's early days...

@@shanebrown4146 Different context... Maynard Keenan's mom Judith Marie was a devout Christian. She suffered a stroke in 1976, when Maynard was just 11 yrs old... and she was partially paralyzed for 27 years until her death. Maynard was perplexed by her devotion to religion, despite her difficult circumstances that likely affected Maynard as well... People do not understand that their problems (addictions, disease, handicaps) eventually become others' problems when they have to take care of them. As a teenager, this song to me was about a child being forced into a life that they did not want. Being controlled to live a specific life that one's parents deemed "correct" for a child. In the process stifling the freedom and independence and eventually crushing the spirit and soul of the child. Eventually, the child wakes up and realizes that they have been fighting against this all their life, but are powerless to prevent the eventual loss of their will, "this old man here is me". With their life now wasted and all potential to ever "see what might have been" they dub whoever destroyed them as "Unforgiven".

And if it turns out hell is very real all these comments are going to hit much differently. Religion is not "forced" on hardly anyone in American, that is just a flat out lie. There are always rare exceptions, but simple having to go to church as a kid is not forcing religion on anyone. Everyone grows and and does what they want to do as an adult. Most kids today do what they want to do as kids, they don't even have to wait to adulthood. The comments smell more of religious bigotry than anything, you all grew up and did whatever you wanted with your lives as adults.

@@Orange6921 you're seriously going to tell me that there are no children in the US made to go to church and at least go along with the charade to keep from being abused? Of course there are. And quite frankly I don't think a god who would create a damned soul by default is worthy of worship.

Lex, you are a true music lover. You have such an open mind you realize if musicians are good, they're good. You allow for them to have different sounds and still acknowledge their greatness. You don't get mad if they experiment and try to develop and grow in their creativity. You don't compare apples to oranges, or think music is a competition. Metallica is lucky to have a fan like you. This this the album that made Metallica the biggest metal band of all time.....who doesn't know Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters? Did you see Metallica on Howard Stern show? Miley Cyrus covered Nothing Else Matters for her album and her producer asked Elton John to do the intro and outro on piano for the song instead of guitar and while they were on Howard Stern Elton zoom called in and told them that Nothing Else Matters was one of the best songs ever written and James was visibly shaken when he said that. I think the lyrics are pretty straight forward. A bitter old man reflecting on his life, all the things he didn't do, all the things that didn't become. Also sounds like he never got to really be himself, to be free. His whole life was a battle, but the last battle, death, he cannot win. "The old man then prepares to die regretfully. That old man here is me." Good and sad song.

Love that you guys finally are hearing this song. It has one of my favorite solos ever. Also, if you didn't notice.. the song is sort of inverse from the usual. Usually verses are calmer and the choruses are heavier. But in this, the verses are heavy and the choruses are lighter. Pretty sweet

In 1991 This album, Nirvana Nevermind, Peral Jam Ten, Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion 1&2, Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic, and Soundgarden Badmotherfinger All Came out within 44 Days of each other. It was an awesome time for music. Also Pearl Jam Ten is essentially a perfect album... not a single bad song.

It took some time for me to adjust to the songs on this album. I was used to their 'Master Of Puppets' sound since it was the first album I had owned. Still, the 'Black' album grew on me over time.

I've had that same experience with a lot of different artists too, when their following album sounds completely different to their usual sound. SOAD, Slipknot, The Prodigy etc. I've disliked albums upon release but grown to love and appreciate them over time once my own musical tastes have changed.

@@peterwale6821 - It was after the 'Black' album that I struggled with being "tolerant" of Metallica's follow up efforts. While there might be songs I was able to enjoy, overall, I lost complete interest and just continued listening and purchasing albums from other bands that I liked. The very last album I purchased from Metallica was 'Hardwired'. At least the title track from the album is decent. I have yet to sit through the rest of it. With Slipknot, it wasn't that I didn't dig what they released, they just weren't releasing "Slipknot" albums. They started having that "Stone Sour" sound to them, and I also dig that band. I just don't feel the two should mix.

I love how this song is loud and heavy in the verse, and then quiet in the chorus! It's like the opposite of a lot of songs. ... Like, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is quiet in the verse, but loud in the chorus. This is the opposite! ... Plus, the solo is one of the best!

So this song is part one of three that was done over years, this being the first is about that anger and rebellion of feeling oppressed in your youth from your family or society so he can’t forgive them, the second one is about middle life where his relationships are not satisfactory and he sees his anger and betrayal from his lover and she is unforgivable also, in the third song from the viewpoint of an older man that is reflecting on his life realizing he has blamed everyone for his failures and holding him back but in fact it was him that is to blame for his decisions and failures and finally realizes he is actually the person he can never forgive.

The official video of this song really illustrated the meaning of this song. The greatest gift you can give your child is the freedom to find themselves...it's also the toughest thing a parent has to do. Protection vs freedom...so tough.

Great reaction! James proved he was a legit singer for The Unforgiven. In fact, his vocals would begin to change drastically after the Black album (e.g., vocal damage, singing lessons, wider vocal range). Check out Unforgiven 2&3; The Outlaw Torn; Bleeding Me; Hero of the Day 🤘⚡

This was an excellent craddle-to-the-grave story. A cautionary tale, illustrating how easily bullying can destroy a life. It begins with a baby boy, which the song says was more or less "f---ed at birth." Then follows that individual through his life, enduring constant bullying, becoming more and more bitter, until he is finally an elderly man on his death bed. And we see him looking back, seeing his entire life wasted. Then we reach the end and hear "That old man here is me." Surprisingly changing from third person, to first person. The brooding poetry found in these lyrics, have cemented this song as a shining, permanent piece of Americana.
