I love Jason in Metallica. They did what they could at the time. Still can't help but wonder if they'd gotten someone with more of a 'virtuoso' rep, how their sound would've evolved, but that would have taken someone with a VERY VERY strong personality (like Cliff had) and odds were against bringing someone like that on board, because James & Lars circled the wagons after Cliff died. It was a hard lesson to learn for anyone who would have joined. I don't blame them for wanting to get a 'team player' in the band. It was like bringing up someone from AA into the majors. James, maybe, was rootless and uncertain after Cliff's death. I feel like Cliff influenced their musical direction soooo much more than he ever got the credit for. So with that titanic presence missing, James had to rely on himself to set the musical direction, and he's obviously really jealous of his rights as the person who was, in his mind, responsible for that. What I loved about Jason in Metallica was his relentless live energy. He was one of us up there, just going apeshit. And he has a lot more talent than he got to demonstrate in Metallica. I don't know what I would have done in his shoes. Evidently for 15 years it was enough to be in the biggest Metal band of all time even though that creativity was suppressed and having to live with the social dynamic that made him the butt of the joke. He made his money, he got off on the crowd energy, and enjoyed all the perks of that. But sometimes the best thing to do in a toxic relationship or a situation that isn't serving you is to walk away, and I give him credit for that. I am glad that he seems to be in a good place with his legacy and that James & Lars have taken the hard lesson to heart. I believe Robert T was the most talented and most easygoing guy that they could have gotten for the job when Jason left. he is a consummate pro! And he knows how to back up heavy guitar parts in a way that always serves the song - listen to his stuff with Zakk and Jerry Cantrell. It's a great day gig for him, and he can use his spare time to pursue his passion projects like the Jaco Pastorius documentary and the other musical guest spots. I hope Metallica let Robert contribute more musically because he is amazing.
