OIF II-04-05 was definitely a reality check was as a young NCO on a first deployment. We were running convoys on a daily basis out of Anaconda all over Iraq. We never knew if we were going to make it back home. I’m very thankful for the team I had. R.I.P. to all the fallen comrades.

i was always on edge and scared shitless while in the humvee out of green zone. out of all the things that could possibly happen my biggest fear was which one of us would get the single cigarette that was included in the survival kit if we became disabled. we were all heavy marlboro red smokers and the provided single cigarette was a generic. after a couple days in the same unit we had our own survival kit with 2 cartons of marlboro reds. lol. funny how being near death at all times changes your priorities in life. all i cared about were cigarettes at the time. didnt give a shit about death just living out the rest of my life with a colostamy bag and having no cigarettes if we became stranded. didnt give a fuck about anything else at all. numb to the world.
