Actually I think it’s one of the bands whose albums are ranked very similarly by its fans. Regardless of your personal preference Master of Puppets is undeniably their best album, closely followed by Ride the Lightning and the Black Album. Some people change the order of these but they’re definitely considered their best. After those most fans would put AJFA or Kill ‘Em All depending on the level of aggression they prefer and after the 5 great albums no one really cares but St Anger goes last without a doubt

The most heartbreaking thing about St. Anger is that it should’ve been their return to glory. Over a year of internal conflict and overcoming personal demons, James going to rehab, everyone clashing as they try to find the magic they once had... I mean, coupled with the really good documentary Some Kind of Monster, this should’ve been a renaissance album. But it just... fell really flat instead. It’s a damn shame.
@GeneFJacket
@GeneFJacket 3 жыл бұрын
St. Anger is made all the more frustrating because not only SHOULD it have been better, it clearly COULD have. There are sketches of legitimately great Metallica tracks on there...Sweet Amber, Unnamed Feeling, All Within My Hands...parts of those songs are genuinely incredible, they're just so bloated and aimless. The production is terrible, the drums sound god-awful, the whole "no solos" mandate was just moronic...just mistake after boneheaded mistake. Had they used what's on the record as a starting point, refined the hell out of the songs, added some damn solos, and cut a good 2-3 minutes off each track it could have been one of their best.

If you find renditions of the songs that fix the obnoxious snare drum and poor production it's really not *that* bad of an album --- some hits, some misses, but I find myself actually enjoying it overall when it has the polish it deserves. Of course better polish on the sound doesn't change the fact it's overall a failed experiment on Metallica's part, that came off the heels of their most popular era. If James was in better shape and the band undergoing less turbulence overall I agree that maybe St. Anger could have been the kick-off to a new creative era for them, but unfortunately they were in no position to make the next Master of Puppets or Black Album, so now here we are. At least we got "Frantic."

Back then St. Anger was the first metal album I ever listened to and without the context of everything they did before it was a really cathartic experience to hear it. Because of that to this day I hold the album in high regard even if their 80s run up until the Black Album ended up overshadowing it when I became more familiar with their history. It has a place, an important one for me at least and I think that it was significant to many teenagers of the early 2000s in that way. Which is not to say that it became a classic but that the very distinct sound it had resonated with me and among all the well-deserved criticism it got and still gets there are fans out there who appreciate its existence.

@@a.t.3192 I’m sorry to break it to you buddy, but classical is very relevant in the metal. cliff burton was a huge classical fan, neoclassical metal exists, metal in a lot of cases is just as (or even more) technical as classical music, a huge percentage of metal solos are classical influenced, and the middle section of Orion is pretty much classical with distortion. Just because the music is aggressive doesn’t mean it can’t be melodic or complicated, get educated.

Yeah, they were pretty shitty people to each other at that point, but the making of St. Anger was what got them over it, and without that record, we probably wouldn't have Metallica anymore. I do because it was the gateway for their mediocre output in the mid 90s to early 2000s. As many here, I would rank "And Justice for all" a lot higher (certainly in the top 3). It is their most progressive album. I've listened to it a million times and it never gets boring. The riffs, the breaks and the solos are great. The production is a matter of taste. I love the super percussive, super tight, extremely clean sound, and, to be honest, I never missed the bass until I read everywhere that it needs more bass. The sound is indeed flatter and not as heavy as the sound on "Master of Puppets" or the Black Album, but many progressive arrangements probably wouldn't have sounded that good with such a fat and heavy sound.

I just don't get it. I think other than death magnetic, and justice for all has the most filler of any other Metallica album tbh. It has some fantastic moments that really stand out but overall I think it's one of their least consistent albums, the drums are probably the most consistently great parts to it but I think every single song was drug out so much longer than it had to be - I mean damn dude did they really need to double down on repeating 2 part choruses like 10 times every song? They had already done it too much on master of puppets, I love disposable heroes and pepper messiah but god damn they drug those out with choruses we didn't need to hear so much. AJFA was them doubling down on that and going way way worse with it in my opinion. If they'd have cut out a lot of the filler I'd agree that it's great but they really stretched it out in a really lazy way IMHO. (The lack of bass makes it even worse to me because it makes it sound like a demo. It's passable in terms of listenability for me since I am mainly a guitarist but I love bass as an instrument and I can't help but wonder how much more interesting the album could've been if it had bass throughout actually because a lot of times the interesting chord changes and harmonies are made much better depending on how the bass is interacting with it. Not having bass on a thrash album kind of wrecks it in my opinion because the guitars tend to be doing simple chords so much, 80% of it is either power chords via 5ths or 4ths and that on it's own is not sonically interesting - the bass is what adds the extra layer to the chords and the rest of the music because whatever extended parts there are to the guitar's power chord is played on the bass. I just don't get any of it man, there was a lot of potential on AJFA but I think they all stabbed themselves in the foot with how they went about it.

Definitely NOT Munchkins, but the Witch's guard as noted by Andrew. However the chant had no hidden meaning, it just sounded evil and ominous. Many have contemplated actual words and origins etc, but the script literally has nothing more than "0o-eeeh-ya, eoh-ya" written down. Sounds like they changed it slightly for filming, but Metallica including it sounded great to me, I didn't think it was campy or funny, I thought it respectable and a great intro sound for the tune.

Master of Puppets 1. Ride Ze Fucking Lightning edit: due to me being dumb 3 months ago, I am moving load to 9th and stanger to 10th (2020) Edit 2: 10) st anger (like it much more now, dark times + st anger = understanding lyrics and liking it more, but still not as good as it should have been 9) load, really have it close to reload, just like st anger I still like it much more than I used to, mainly because of the lyrics again but yeah 8) basically said it in load, just has more faster and heavier shit 7) hardwired, don’t get me wrong I love this album too but not everything is fast, lyrics are great too but not as good as 6) death magnetic, fast as fuck, love it, only thing is James voice is probably at its second worse here, somehow it got better for hardwired and has since too, saw em at lollapolloza 5) kill ‘em all, just way too raw, still love all the songs too (I love basically all their songs) but it’s just an above average thrash album and it’s good 4) black album, if it was faster holy shit, but still heavy as balls, which was awesome, also love the ballads here too, and a lot of songs, with some speed and heaviness 3) justice, the top 3 are basically interchangeable but it’s not RTL or MOP, so yeah, also love the tone, and James peak in all things, including beer 2) RTL, favorite album ever, literally no skips, best tone IMO, and Still raw enough too, creeping death too, best song to me 1) master, just amazing, so fast, so much anger, Orion, can’t go wrong here, and sanitarium like dude Tiers because it’s hard to rank 1) perfect: master and RTL 2) great: justice, black 3) decent: kill em all 4) not good: load/reload, st anger, All coulda been better

The only songs I like on TBA have to be Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Sad but true, Wherever I may roam, and Nothing else matters. I also think that the laziest Kirk was on solos was the entirety of St. Anger because there are no solos!

Damn Melon, That AJFA take is legit one of the worst i've ever heard. Never once got the impression they were "Running out of ideas" As i would argue its them at their most creative tbh. Musically its far and away their most technical and progressive album to date, And lyrically i believe its peak James. Blackened, AJFA, One, Harvester Of Sorrow & Dyers Eve are some of the deepest, Rawest songs he's written. I think Lars is at his absolute best here, And id say the riffs on this album are easily some of their best as well. Overall despite the lack of bass and somewhat brittle production, I think musically its every bit as good and in some spots arguably better than the rest of their 80's material.

You are totally right. It's a great metal record for "beginners" if you know what I mean. Like, it is pretty heavy, it has catchy riffs, great vocals and lyrics, great solos, all of the good stuff that metal has to offer, but at the same time it's much more tight and "clean" than their early stuff. There isn't as many instrumental parts, songs usually aren't too long, have only one solo etc. Thrash metal isn't the easiest entrance to heavy music, you need to be already used to the sound of heavy stuff to enjoy that complicated and technical style of Justice or Master. Black Album on the other hand has songs like Wherever I May Roam or Enter Sandman that are great examples of how simple can be stronger. And I could easily play The Unforgiven or Nothing Else Matters to my classmates and the would like it.

@@Eris_Norregard Saying that more accessible is less good, like he claims. Black Albums song writing, melodies, production etc. blow most parts of the old thrash stuff out of the water. Just because it's less technical or more accessible doesn't mean that it's anywhere less good, as he was saying, dude.
@Eris_Norregard
@Eris_Norregard 5 жыл бұрын
@@DropkickNation Yeah, I agree with you on that. I don't think he meant what he said in a bad way though. When he said it's "more influential than great", I think he was simply pointing out the fact that just because it's the most to the general public known metal album, it doesn't make it the best metal album. Or that's the way I understood it.

Out of everything you said, load and reload being the last time they challenged themselves artistically is right on the nail, it just feels like Metallica stopped caring to be Metal and the band that made insane epics over fame and money and sadly I think that's what makes all their work afterwards nowhere near their first 5 records
