That is a beautiful example of refurbishing a blade I am sure that you did the heat treat perfectly although this is a refurbishing only a skilled Craftsmen to do. For us amateurs out here we have to remove or convert the rust, polish, sharpen, and use the or reuse the original rivet holes not make them bigger for our convenience.

Restoration: a return of something to a former, original, normal, or unimpaired condition. Sure, you could consider a restoration to be returning something to its original state, but is anything truly able to return to its original state? Something is going to be different about it, whether it’s 1/1000 thinner from removing the rust or the DNA of the wood on the handle being different. The knife is no longer impaired by rust and a broken handle, so by definition it is restored.

Correct me if I’m wrong I’m new to this I do stock removal. But when you put it in the fire aren’t you killing the heat treatment for edge retention that the previous maker would have done? Like after quenching wouldn’t you still need to heat treat it in an oven of some sort to get it back to the correct hardness?

I could be wrong, but I believe you're supposed to follow the quench with baking it in the oven at about 400 degrees for a little while to help with the hardening process.
@thechumpsbeendumped.7797
@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 Жыл бұрын
@@Fightre_Flighte The post quench heat is to slightly soften (bring back the temper) the steel so it’s less brittle. There’s a few ways of doing it, repeated thermo cycling in an oven at a carefully regulated heat and time is probably best but most hobbyists and smaller makers just use a toaster oven or heat the metal with a flame until its straw colored and let it cool slowly.

Do you ever soak extremely rusty knives in vinegar? I haven’t tried it, but I heard you can also pump electricity though water with positive charge on the blade ( could be wrong. It might be negative. Idk much about this) and negative through a very small thin metal plate or rod. I usually use files, belt sanders/grinders, sponge sandpaper, etc.
