Doesn't this create a distressed metal corner with twice the welding and no additional strength? It also created more grinding. The time I save by cutting 45* angles, I can use for grinding the welds smooth. Cool geometry lesson though and a neat way to interpret a corner.

mah dude. your time is money. the amount of time that he spent with a grinder just so that he could bend the piece into that shape. you're better off just figuring out how long you want your angled piece to be then run your marks to form a Y shape. don't worry about having to bend the pieces. You're welding the piece anyways and companies make flapdisks for a reason. sincerely from a fabracator with gate building experience.

I like the appearance of it. I think that it has a nicer appearance than the normal 45 degree miter. What he really did was to do two 22.5 degree miters for the corner. I think that this would look good at the top of a gate when you are using 1" x 2" rectangular tubing.

I'd like to see a structural analysis of this with a good weld. I feel as though this would be superior in resisting a collapsing bending force than a traditional v-cut.
@danieljonsson8095
@danieljonsson8095 Жыл бұрын
It's not, it's much weaker. Because of all the extra welding, you with this method get a very large area that is significantly weakened, both because the welds themselves are weaker but also because you weaken all the metal in the areas around the welds as well. So rather than a one seam that, less than an inch wide, you have this huge area that is several inches of just plain weakness. There's a reason you don't see these kind of joints in the professional world, because they serve no function. Regardless if you're after strength, looks or price, there are better options. Like, if you want the looks, do a 45 degree mitre and you use a router to get the look you want with whatever radius. If you want cheapest, just do the 45 mitre. And if you want strength, you do a sqare join weld. Even if we assume you need the straight inner flat for mounting, then you'd still be better off with doing 3 separate pieces with 2 v cuts so you avoid the bending. It's a pretty bad corner, but it's better than this.
@radialorbits
@radialorbits Жыл бұрын
if there were any strength concerns, you would use a thicker material or add plating either side/inside
@danieljonsson8095
@danieljonsson8095 Жыл бұрын
@@radialorbits So instead of simply using the right bend, you'd rather use the wrong bend that you then have to add supports to, adding even more cost and time to the project? And it would be heavier than you'd needed it to be too so it's not even beneficial even as a personal project where time wasted is usually not a concern. And the supports means more material so more expensive too. Personal projects like that are already more expensive than you need them to be, why make them even more expensive?
@radialorbits
@radialorbits Жыл бұрын

you can do that or cut out 2 V shapes, personally this method takes more time, maybe a second pass to fill were the rounded surface meet the edge. Also consider you cant use shorter stock tubes and every mistake is quite costly. I usually start with the longer pieces so i can reuse them if i make error, cut wrong size or angle in the wrong direction.
