On this video we are watching and reacting to the trailer of Assassin's Creed Shadows. This trailer has created a lot of controversy and backlash with people attacking and insulting each other over the protagonist being a Black African man. What is the real history about this? Let's talk about it.

• Assassin's Creed Shado...
Many people are getting really upset about this game, particularly in Japan as Japanese gamers are feeling left out when compared to previous Assassin's Creed games which always features a protagonist from the same are as the setting.
Even though these feeling as absolutely justified, it's also important to not overswing and reach incorrect conclusions such as some people mentioning that there was never a Black African man in Feudal Japan, which is historically incorrect.
Let's talk about Yasuke, let's watch the trailer and see if the way they represented him in this game is in any way coherent with the historical record and most importantly let's ask the hardest question of all...Was Yasuke a samurai?

We should also remember that just because you're given land *doesn't* mean you're made a noble or anyone with authority; it's very likely that Nobunaga just gave Yasuke the land that the house he was given was built on. Plus, after the Honno-ji incident, Mitsuhide sent Yasuke *back* to the Jesuits, & we basically never hear of him again. It's entirely possible that Nobunaga just considered Yasuke a friend & gave him all that stuff as a *gift* for a friend, *without* the title of Samurai coming with it. Was he a bushi? Probably; but there were so many different types of bushi that to assume he was part of that class made him a samurai is just *stupid* . Not to mention that the Japanese who commented on the trailer were all like "this's historical revisionism for an anti Japanese agenda; why else would they pick Yasuke when they had figures like Musashi Miyamoto or Hattori Hanzo they could've picked instead?" So basically, whether he really was a samurai or not, Yasuke being 1 of the protags in this game, with the other being a very *male* looking fictional kunoichi exposes this game as woke revisionist propaganda that's gonna make it D.O.A.

Let me summarize from my point of view as a Japanese person what is controversial about this work in Japan. Although there are almost no primary documents about Yasuke, he has appeared in many creative works. For example, there is no record of Yasuke's participation in battle, but he is portrayed as a hero who fought on the battlefield in creative works. Because of the above background, a setting that was created as a fiction is being propagated in Western society as if it were a fact. On the other hand, UBI claims that the story of this work (especially Yasuke) is based on historical fact. Many Japanese feel that it is insulting to claim novels written by Americans as a Japanese historical fact. Yasuke's race is not the issue. The problem is that they are promoting a fake history as fact.

@octodaddy2553 people don't care that he's in the game, most people would not have a problem with him being a side character in the game, AC has never had a real life historical figure as the mc of a game so to all of a sudden choose to go that route and ignore the countless Japanese figures they could have chosen and picked Yusuke seems like a slap in the face. This argument that everybody is just mad that the mc of an assassins creed game is black is nonsense considering NOBODY cared when they made a game in Egypt with a black mc, because it made sense. If this game was in Africa and the mc was a Japanese guy people would be upset at that as well.

Its just wrong on many levels and its much more complicated as well. Why cat just they keep to the normal, in a japanasee area put a damn japaneese hero...

@@AstroBimpson honestly, the fact that he was a historical figure in Japan is the only reason ppl defending this has legs and I believe those arguments also have some strength. Why can’t Ubisoft create a game about yasuke? He’s depicted plenty of times in Japanese media as a samurai/warrior and even Nobunaga is depicted as some little girl sometimes in media bc it’s fictional! Even if it’s historical fantasy, which these games tend to lean on. The main issue is that ppl DID get mad about him bc of his race and not about the predatory pricing of potential mid games which will continue to plague the industry if we don’t pushback heavily the same way ppl are pushing back against yasuke. So yes, I have major contention with most arguments made against this game that are race based. I don’t believe it’s in good faith

I am Japanese. I am using Google Translate, so please read with patience. I watched a video of you testing Yasuke before. So when I found this video, I felt like I had found a friend who could calmly examine this issue. Most Japanese people want to know more about the historical romance of a black man named Yasuke. No one will hate Yasuke. The definition of "SAMURAI" that Westerners think of is different from the definition of "Samurai" in Japan, so it is true that the perception of Yasuke's class is misaligned. There are many Japanese people who think that because the big broadcasting stations broadcast with the wrong definition, they have misunderstood history and have become political tools. This video explains it calmly. thank you. The origin of the word "Samurai" is a verb meaning "to serve a noble." The meaning is as broad as that of a salaryman. "Samurai" includes farmers, who made up nearly 90% of the population, and 7% of the ruling class, samurai, during wartime. In Europe and America, "SAMURAI" seems to be used to mean a samurai of the ruling class, but Yasuke is thought to have been a commoner. Because Yasuke doesn't have a last name. Like many Japanese until 1875. There is no record of Yasuke being given a surname either on the Japanese side or on the Jesuit side. The problem is that UBI made it clear that they wanted our samurai. I think that not only Japanese people but also Yasuke are taking advantage of this. Up until now, I had laughed and forgiven the strange portrayal of Japan in the West, but now I understand that it's not that they don't know Japan, but that they have appropriated its culture. I'm disappointed that Shadows doesn't give you that feeling of having been there (I've actually traveled there), as I wandered through life-like Constantinople, Italy, and the pyramids in the Assassin's Creed series. This is something that I felt that I would not be able to experience. I won't discuss it in detail, but when I watched the PV, I realized that they had done a lot of research. I don't want you to think that the Japan they depict is an accurate portrayal of Japanese culture like other series. We are angry about UBI because it has created a structure where black people take away the main character from Japanese men. I think that Naoe's facial features, which are typical of Western Asian women, were altered to sell. There is also a Japanese proverb that says, "Hair is a woman's life." It's strange that the hair that is life is short. Short hair should be girls under 6 years old or nuns or modern people. I want to reduce discrimination and prejudice for the sake of children. I'm glad that everyone is enjoying Japan's history and culture, but I think people should seriously reflect on UBI. For getting Yasuke involved in this way of disrespecting Japanese people. I want a world where there is mutual respect.

Something I have yet to see anyone mention regarding Yasuke is the situation with his name. He's exclusively known as Yasuke, single name, no family name. It's fairly well established that commoners throughout Japanese history usually only had one name, which only changed following the Meiji Ishin. In comparison, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, originally named Hiyoshimaru, didn't have a surname. Though, just rushing through a quick refresher, his father might have had one, going by Kinosshita, which Hideyoshi may have used. So, the example might not be as concrete as I imagined. Anyway, Hideyoshi changed his name to Hashiba Hideyoshi once he rose to elevated status, whether you want to call that samurai or not. That's an example under the same lord. As for William Adam, he was named Miura Anjin, two names, by Shogun Tokugawa. Whether Oda was going to elevate Yasuke or not is much more debatable. But, I think the fact he was never given a surname is a clear indicator that he was not yet a samurai or someone of elevated social status.

@@jestyo0o I haven't watched the video yet. But as you've summarized it, I'm skeptical. Nobunaga was certainly considered eccentric. But, the Hideyoshi example sufficiently undermines the argument. He's conventionally considered a commoner until given permission to change his name by Nobunaga. If we compare apples to apples and assume consistency (may be a large assumption), I don't see Yasuke having been made a samurai or man of elevated status however you want to label it.

I am Japanese. I can say that this video is generally correct. Simply put, a Bushi is a warrior Think of a Samurai as a knight. Nobunaga is known as an innovative man, but there is no doubt that it was quite a risky move to turn a black man into a samurai in Japan at that time. Samurai take pride in their status and would never accept the fact that a dark-skinned person who suddenly appeared on the scene was of the same status as them. This is not discrimination or anything, but that was the way it was in those days. Now, the fact that Yasuke was chosen as the main character in the new AC film, I must say that it has been received somewhat critically in Japan, because it is not easy for a Japanese man to evade the other Japanese men. The reason is that there is no reason to put Yasuke as the main character, even though he is a Japanese man. In the case of AC, the protagonist is traditionally a man with roots in the country where the story takes place. Why did they put a black man as the main character only in this film, which is set in Japan? Moreover, a black person was a very rare race in Japan at that time. Even considering the setting as an assassin, Yasuke is too conspicuous, and even if he were to blend in with the crowd, his skin color and his huge body would make him instantly recognizable. In any case, this kind of opinion is often expressed critically in Japan.

During the Sengoku-Jidai period (the period Yasuke served Nobunaga), the traditional master-servant relationship in Japanese society collapsed, and the traditional definition of samurai changed dramatically, becoming synonymous with bushi. jizamurai (地侍) were bushi with the status of nanushi (名主), the highest class in the village who managed the farmland, and many of them became vassals of the sengoku daimyo (戦国大名, feudal lords). On the other hand, it also referred to local bushi who did not serve the shogun or daimyo. It did not matter that Yasuke didn't hail from Japanese nobility or became samurai by non-hereditary nature. By that period, the rules and conditions had changed. Also, Nobunaga, Yasuke's Daimyō, was well known to defy earlier Japanese traditions. I see many people incorrectly referring to Nobunaga as "Yasuke's Shogun." Nobunaga could not become Shogun because he did not hail from the Minamoto bloodline. However, at the height of his power, Nobunanga definitely became more powerful than the Shogun of his time, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, and defeated him, dissolving the Shogunate.

There are MANY Japanese who are not very knowledgeable of their own country's history, just as there are many Americans, Russians, and so on not knowledgeable of theirs. I minoured in East Asian Civilizations with focus on Japan and have studied Japanese culture, language and history for decades. However, most of my sources on this matter come from historians and certified historical references far better equipped with the knowledge than myself. I'll take their word any day over randoms on the internet. 2. How do you even know he/she is really Japanese to begin with? Because they told you so in a KZfaq comment? Are you not aware of all the angry non-Japanese weaboos who have been exposed as pretending to be Japanese, sometimes using Google Translate to exhibit false "outrage" and spam the message boards with fake comments? 3. It is a historical fact that although Bushi and Samurai (comes from the root word subarau, which literally means "to serve") were differentiated more distinctly at one point, during the Sengoku period, they became synonymous with each other. It was in that period that Yasuke and Nobunaga existed.

Nah, AC was peaked and completed when Ezio's trilogy finished. After that Ubi started to make ACs as soulless mass-produced series in their own capitalistic way. Black Flag was the best piece of these products mostly due to the shipbattles, but the AC's legacy and its true meaning were already dead when it came out. I played most of the AC games but hardly remember the story in Black Flag and the others later. On the other hand, I clearly remember the story of Altair and Ezio, and their journeys. Ubi did the same with Far Cry, after Far Cry 3.

That's nice to know, but keep in mind that in a more colloquial sense, people nowadays use the term "Samurai" as a generic term for all medieval Japanese warriors (except perhaps shinobi/ninja). In the same way most people use the term "Knight" in a generic sense to refer to all western European medieval warriors, regardless of social class or nobility status. Is it correct? There is no samurai in Japanese history who did not have a family name. For example, English samurai William Adams was given the Japanese name of Anjin Miura when he became a samurai in the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Miura was Adams' family name in Japan. Yasuke was given the Japanese name of Yasuke when he entered the service of Nobunaga, but was not given a family name. This means that Yasuke's status was lower than that of a samurai.

This ring around the rosie and play of words really doesn't stack up when you look at the rest of history and not just Yasuke in particular. There is a huge list of famous Samurai from the Sengoku Jirai period all named samurai yet somehow when it comes to Yasuke "oh well but you see he could have been but we don't know for sure". In the Sengoku period if you were a Samurai serving the great Daymio Oda Nobunaga there would be an ENDLESS stream of documentation written about you. Makes sense no?

People keep saying this but it's not true. Ezio was a real person. They even explain it in the game itself in the notes you can read. Ezio was a real person caught in a real family conspiracy he escaped. The thing is, is the AC2 builds off of that since he disappears from history after his escape. So AC does have a precedent for this kind of stuff. Nioh also had a samurai who was a white character in a similar circumstance to Yasuke and it was well received. You guys are trying to white wash history that isn't your heritage. It's literally Japanese and bits of African heritage, and they should decide if their historical characters are proper because it's a FICTIONAL game set in a culture that isn't yours.

The argument shouldn’t be if Yasuke was a Samurai or not, because it should not matter. The argument is that why would AC choose a protagonist that doesn’t represent the culture (which ethnicity has a big part in) as a whole. As mentioned in the video, every other AC game has created a character that is a reflection of the culture/ethnicities of the location settings. They chose the 1 out of tens to hundreds of thousands of warriors during the time as a main protagonist. I feel bad for the Japanese AC fans who feel not properly represented or replaced in a game surrounding their own culture.

I do think that reflecting the culture doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things if you have the writing chops to make it work, but with AC shadows I am really not holding any hope for the story to be remotely decent.

@@NominalistWay No Revelation took place in Turkey not Syria, Istanbul is located in turkey....secondly Ezio's story started off in his home country of Italy in AC 2 and in AC Brotherhood....lastly by the time of AC Black Flag, Spain, Portugal, France and England had colonies in the Carribbean and the Carribbean was definitely populated by European pirates and privateers from those countries.....nice try with your cherry picking there buddy. If Ubisoft really cared about diversity and inclusion of black people then in each of these settings they could have introduced such diverse characters in Ezio's story because around that time there was a black member of the Medici family who was the Duke of Florence named Alessandro De Medici, they could have also introduced black general Alexander Thomas Dumas in AC Unity because he was present in the French military during the French Revolution and during Napoleons rise to power.....I can also think of at least several historical settings and events in other African countries outside of Egypt that they could set an AC game in such as the Anglo Zulu war, The Mali Empire of Mansa Musa, The Italian invasion of Abyssinia (Modern Ethiopia) where you could play as a Ethiopian assassin, the Zimbabwean Rozvi Empires war against Portuguese Colonists and many more ....but hey folks clearly love tokenized black characters and warped black history over the real deal so have it.

In which case, the story could at the same time be a sequel to Ezio's adventure and be represented by a local character. But why don't the players give any concern about whether the story is represented be a character native to the location where the story took place? Yasuke existed. Yasuke was not a Samurai. He was a Kosho, an attendant and bodyguard. Kosho is a Samurai-in-training, much like a squire to a knight, but NOT a full fledged Samurai. Samurai does NOT simply mean warrior, and therefore anybody who fights is not automatically a Samurai. Yasuke was kept on a short leash during his service to Nobunaga, he had no free reign to do as he pleases. Yasuke had so little impact on anything during his years there, that they would have to rewrite history to fit him in with events of the time. Yasuke should have been an NPC that you interact with and help, NOT pay as. Playable characters should both have been Japanese nobodies, a Samurai and a Shinobi, of the time interacting with the high profile names of the period. Notice how nobody complained about AC Liberation, AC Freedom Cry or Origins, skin colour has nothing to factor into it, but rewriting history with the literal token black guy in the setting rather than the PLETHORA of famous names is blatantly just to mark off a checkbox for DEI and Sweet Baby Inc, and that is a big factor of the hate.

By that logic, it means we should play as Nobunaga. But that’s now how it works. When making a protagonist especially for these games, it benefits to have a protagonist that is close to the action but not the main reason it occurs as that is just kind of hard to fit into a game. Like if we played as Nobunaga, the game would have to become a discount Shogun 2 in how we have such large control over those kind of things. It also can benefit to work off a historical figure with a more ambiguous and unclear background. As it gives room for more creative freedoms and filling in the blanks without defying what we do know about the figure.

Yes, by Japanese feodal standard, it is an honorary title, but by modern one it would be terrifying title to have. As someone who red books on Yasuke years ago, it's pretty interesting to see his character magnified on one side while downplayed on the other. Yasuke indeed was a slave turned warrior but he wasn't a fully recognized and outstanding Samouraï the trailer is portraying. Oda Nobunaga made him part of his court as his personal bodyguard because of his fascination for him but also as a way to exhibit him and intimidate people almost like a tigger pet. I believe it would've been better to pick a real japanese Samouraï as the male protagonist then make Yasuke a secondary character who becomes fully part of the intrigue as the story advances.

Yasuke We will begin with the fact that Yasuke was a real person, he did exist, he was of African descent and he was put into the service of Oda Nobunaga. This is fact, and is not disputed. What is disputed are all the revisionist stories of Yasuke as a great warrior, as having been awarded Samurai status, and earning respect of the Japanese people and other Damiyo that he encountered in the service of the Oda... THIS IS NOT FACT. Romantic stories of the famed Black Samurai are nothing more than fables no more real than the futuristic comic book land of Wakanda. Recent books by authors such as Thomas Lockley provide a plethora of speculation portrayed as fact, typically referencing historical documents and then interpreting them in a way to fit the narrative that sells books. However we won’t go to far into the motivations of authors and commercialization of romantic stories, these have their purpose and remaining true to the historical records is rarely one of them. Here is a high level overview based upon known recorded facts... Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 in service of the Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano, who had been appointed the Visitor (inspector) of the Jesuit missions in the Indies (East Africa, South and East Asia). He accompanied Valignano when the latter came to the Kyoto area in March 1581 and his appearance caused a lot of interest with the local people. According to Histoire ecclésiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon, written by François Solier of the Society of Jesus in 1627, Yasuke was likely from Mozambique however this is not confirmed. When Yasuke was presented to Oda Nobunaga, the Japanese Daimyō thought that his skin must have been coloured with black ink. Nobunaga had him strip from the waist up and made him scrub his skin. These events are recorded in a 1581 letter of the Jesuit Luís Fróis to Lourenço Mexia, and in the 1582 Annual Report of the Jesuit Mission in Japan, also by Fróis. These accounts were also published in Cartas que os padres e irmãos da Companhia de Jesus escreverão dos reynos de Japão e China II (1598), normally known simply as Cartas. "When Nobunaga realized that the African's skin was indeed black, he took an interest in him." According to a Japanese accounting of Yaskue states: "On the 23rd of the 2nd month [23 March 1581], a black page came from the Christian countries. The man was healthy with a good demeanour and Nobunaga praised Yasuke's strength. Some say that Yasuke could speak or was taught Japanese, and it is stated Nobunaga enjoyed talking with him. However, it is more likely that a Jesuit missionary translated for them, in order to control the dialogue as they were not ones to miss an opportunity to interact with Nobunaga in order to advance their mission. Reportedly, Nobunaga's nephew gave him a sum of money at this first meeting, for his travels, and on 14 May, Yasuke departed for Echizen Province with Fróis and the other Christians. During this trip, they met local warlords such as Shibata Katsutoyo, Hashiba Hidekatsu, and Shibata Katsuie, They returned to Kyoto on 30 May. At some point, although when is not exactly clear, Yasuke entered Nobunaga's service. Yasuke was also mentioned in the prototype of Shinchō ki owned by Sonkeikaku Bunko , the archives of the Maeda clan. According to this, the black man named Yasuke was given his own residence and a short, ceremonial katana by Nobunaga. Nobunaga also assigned him the duty of weapon bearer (much to the annoyance of actual samurai) Here is where the facts morph from what is known, to what is "wished for"... Nobunaga had a propensity for the unique, and he was particularly interested in all things foreign. Clearly he was fascinated by Yasuke, and this was documented to be to the chagrin of many of his top generals such as Akechi Mitsuhide, who is reported to have been disgusted by the site of Yasuke, and saw him as nothing more than a wild beast. After the Battle of Tenmokuzan, Nobunaga led his force, including Yasuke, and inspected the former territory of the Takeda clan. So people make the assumption that Yasuke actually fought in this battle, and that he donned Samurai armor and fought valiantly as a samurai hero. Fact check: A sword bearer stays behind with the general camp, near to the lord, they don't go out on the battlefield, and there is ABSOLUTELY POSITVELY NO RECORD OF YASUKE FIGHTING IN ANY BATTLE! There is also NO RECORD of Yasuke receiving martial arts training, or use of the Japanese sword, either when in the service of Nobunaga or the years prior. The truth is that his time with Nobunaga was limited, as they first met in 1581 and Oda Nobunaga was dead a year later. This is hardly enough time for Yasuke to be trained to be the great warrior all the Waukanda dreamers want him to be. Yasuke as a Samurai? Sadly, for either commercial purpose, or some social equity rationale, some people attempt to equate Yasuke as a non Japanese Samurai in the same way the English sailor William Adams (Pilot) was later viewed. However Adams was actually presented Samurai status, and there is no record of Yasuke being bestowed similar Samurai status. The FACTs are that Oda Nobunaga made him a servant for a few months. A few months... not a lifetime of service dedicated to serving his lord, ready to give his life in the service of the Oda. Another fact that is clear; Yasuke was kept around as talking piece, an oddity for Nobunaga to show off, much in the same way he enjoyed irking other Daimyo by showing them Azai Nagamasa's gold plated skull. Fate of Yasuke They say that Yasuke was present at Honnoji and took part in the fighting that lead to Nobunagas death. However it is recorded that perhaps only a single individual from the Oda survived the Honnoji incident and it wasn't Yaskuke. Yasuke was alleged to have been taken by Mitsuhide troops soon after the Honnoji incident, but Akechi had his men return him to the Christian missionaries stating that you don't kill the beast, for the fault of his master. Was he an Honorable Samurai? Despite modern romanticized versions of Yasuke, if he was this great Samurai some would have you believe, then it stands to reason that he would have either fought to the death at Honnoji, or at the very least he would have committed Seppuku. Nope.... didn't happen. Or if he was an honorable Samurai like the 47 Ronin, at the very least he would have begged to join Hideyoshi in the fight against Mitsuhide and gotten revenge.... don't you think? Nope, didn't happen All that is known about the fate of Yaskue , is that he was seen with the Christian Missionaries after Nobunagas death and reportedly fled the country soon after. So while people may attempt to romanticize the story of Yasuke to suit their agenda, the truth is that such blatantly false attempts to rewrite history are pure revisionism and nothing more. Faking history because it makes you "feel good" does nothing but a disservice to all students of the culture, the Japanese nation and the historical record. There was no black samurai, no great Yasuke, no hero.... just a man who was a victim of circumstance and the times he lived in.

Out of all the arguments, this one is the most peculiar. He spent about ~15 months in Japan, wouldn't there be a record of his training or fighting abilities? Surely Metatron and people on both sides would have mentioned that. Instead we have to fall back on the old, "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." Which you can apply to anything in history that doesn't have a conclusive answer. The title debate is really not so much the issue, it's the insinuation that if Yasuke was a Samurai then therefore he was a badass on the battlefield as depicted in the game trailer. Kinda like how some people think Frank Miller's 300 and the movie adaptation are detail for detail real. Essentially also doing what pop culture has done with the Shinobi. Some people will believe pop culture over historical accuracy. Ultimately, this should have been a Japanese lead character, BOTH of them. Yeah, I actually looked at the edit war for that page. Every single edit in the war has been over that single block of text stating there is no evidence of him being a samurai, either to remove it, add it back, or in one case add citations. Should also note that it seems to be one person that is desperate to have the block removed and he actually says that Yasuke can be declared a samurai without any evidence needed to back it up.

metatron, since you also have friends and colleagues in japan, maybe you can verify this type of comment, whether it is true or not. it's from a native there, i'm just relaying it here: "I am Japanese, I am writing this using a translator, please listen to me. First, I would like to talk about how Yasuke was treated in Japan. Yasuke's name does not appear in most history books, and for this reason he is treated as a fictitious entity that never existed. He does not appear in history textbooks for elementary, junior high, and high school students, and only those who have studied history at universities have heard of him. Even in the few history books that mention his name, it only says that he "served as a peasant and carried baggage. Everything about him is a fiction. He was tall, muscular, and strong, and Nobunaga, suspicious of whether his skin was his own, had his men wipe it to make sure. All of them are outright lies. And it is not even known if the Yasuke in the history books was a black Yasuke, because the name "Yasuke" is like John, a name that can be found anywhere in Japan! Also, Yasu came to Japan one year before Nobunaga died, Nobunaga had already almost unified Japan, how could he be a samurai without a war? And even a 10 year old Japanese could tell that he was not a samurai, because he had no family name. When we Japanese introduce ourselves, we say our family name and then our first name. This is because until the Meiji period (1868-1912), when equality among the four peoples was introduced, ordinary people were not allowed to have family names. In fact, some ordinary people have become samurai or feudal lords, such as Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who achieved greatness after Nobunaga, who rose from a mere peasant Tokichirou with his intelligence and courage to finally become Hideyoshi Toyotomi. And you foreigners often use the word "retainer", which is a mistranslation of the Japanese word "KASHIN". the original meaning of "KASHIN", is all those who work for the samurai family. A cook, a gardener, a maid, etc. are all KASHIN (retainers). In other words, those who support Yasuke are making a fuss based on a source of lies written by a black supremacist who cannot even read Japanese properly. Ridiculous. Yasuke was in the service of Nobunaga, so he fits the definition of KASHIN, and Samurai are KASHIN because they also serve Nobunaga, but that doesn't mean Yasuke is a Samurai! The reality is that Yasuke was like Nobunaga's pet or maid! We Japanese people will never forgive ubisoft's foolishness. Please let those who read this know how we feel."

Yasuke was send in Japan as a slave. Then since Nobunaga were a collector - he wanting to have all the possible things which the rest doesnt have - Yasuke was something so exotic that was given to Nobunaga as a gift. During this period - no one in Japan were seeing a black man, so it is very likely that he were thinking from the commoners as some sort of "oni" ( a demon ) and possible even compared to Umibōzu ( a sea demon in Japanese mythology ). For Nobunaga having an "oni" on a leash was more than expression of power and might ( something which ultimately got him killed by Mitsunari ). Back to the topic. Samurai in end of the Muromachi period already had a different meaning than "bushi" - a warrior. Samurai had to have perfect speaking and at least some good writing skills. They were already deep into Chinese literature, and most likely having at least a minor job at government position. Knowing perfectly the cultural traditions is absolutely mandatory for someone been a "samurai". The time from receiving Yasuke as a gift to his death is less than 15 months. At this period is absolutely impossible for him to learn to speak properly, write perfectly, get into the culture to be able to receive the rang of "samurai". It is even questionable is he was understanding the most of the things which were happening. There were not yet "hatamoto" since well, this is something from Edo period, and no one of the main characters here is reaching it alive. As well "hatamoto" is from 1603 onward and it is granted only on HIGH RANKED Samurai close to Tokugawa. The Muromachi positions were "kosho" - a personal page to a high ranked samurai. A position which involving keeping the swords of your lord when he resting, eating or drinking, and preparing the things for some cultural events for him. Yet since Yasuke was practically illiterate, and therefore this position is as well doubted as practically not possible as well. The only one possible rank for him was "ashigaru" - a commoner which is given a TEMPRARY status as a "bushi" in order to serve for a specific task to a highly ranked samurai. So.. NOPE - Yasuke was never a samurai. This is an insult to the history and Japanese culture. And NOPE - he was not "respected" member of Japanese society. It is impossible since to be "respected" in Japan requires .. well .. HELL a lot of things to be perfectly done. As NOPE - he was not "retainer". Retainer in Japanese is "gokenin". Gokenin is given land directly from the lord, and he have to be in administration of this land - therefore he need to de quite well in the laws and customs , and well.. everything as a high ranked administration should do. So nope - been a "retainer" is an absurd. The data for him is literally 5 rows, and there is no even which is even recoded that he spoke even a word. And NOPE - You wont find him listed as a vasal. There is a list of the vassals issued at the moment someone become, and this list is spread at least to the Shogun, the Emperor's court nobles, the local daimios, and ye - there is no such name in any list anytime. So.. nope. He was more like an exotic object which Nobunaga were carried around to scare the peoples which were not seeing such a man (look above). And object - nothing more.

You are a bit mistaken in this video, Metatron. First, he wasn't going to be promoted to "Tono." Tono is a Japanese word that means "Lord," and Nobunaga was joking that he would make Yasuke his lord. Secondly, the Japanese Wikipedia reads: また、金子拓によると、『信長公記』の筆者である太田牛一末裔の加賀大田家に伝わった自筆本の写しと推測される写本(尊経閣文庫所蔵)には、この黒人・弥助が住処(部屋)と扶持(食べ物)を与えられ、道具持ちをしていたという記述があるという[12]。 He had food, a place to sleep, and had the job of carrying tools. From the Japanese Wikipedia: According to Kaneko Taku, this is a description of Yasuke from a manuscript believed to be handwritten by Oda Ushikichi, the author of "Nobunaga Koki," passed down to the Kaga Oda family. This manuscript is stored in the Sonkeikaku Library (尊経閣文庫, Sonkeikaku bunko) (I couldn't find anything about an actual private house, much less an estate) Samurai were very high-ranking and had their own estates, even at that time when you said the word wasn't common, so this doesn't look like much of a samurai treatment to me. Even if there were poorer samurai (though he couldn't be a rönin because those were lordless samurai, and he was Nobunaga's servant) his description is much more in line with his actual job of just carrying tools or the swords, as some say. Also we can find this: 家臣に、弥助をどう処分するかを聞かれた光秀は、「黒奴は動物で何も知らず、また日本人でもない故、これを殺さず」として処刑させずに "Luís Fróis's Annual Report on Japan" That translates to: When Mitsuhide was asked by his vassal how he would dispose of Yasuke, he did not have him executed, saying, ``The black guy is an animal, he knows nothing, and he is not Japanese, so I will not kill him.'' That is not something you would say about an enemy samurai. Lastly, Yasuke was with Nobunaga for barely 15 months; that's no time to earn the respect a samurai needs. That's barely enough time to learn how to speak Japanese.

TBH I would love to see Metatron respond to you, I am not expert on Japaneese culture or history, but based on what he stated in previous video on Yasuke plus what You added it really seems very unlikely that Yasuke was anything else than exotic pet Nobunaga used to show off, the way he was used as bodyguard and basically a jester during parties only supports that claim, also the way he was talking to him "yea you are my black samurai, I will totally make you a lord", sorry but it looks like Yasuke was not respected warrior but a butt of a joke, he would not even be able to properly use weapons he got, and you see that treatment reflected in quote from Mitsuhide you provided. I would really like to know what Metatron discussed with the author of that "black samurai" book as it seems that his stance changed from "we don't really know but it is unlikely" to " we don't really know" and I do not belive that term "samurai" being used rarely in official documents at the time was enough for him to change his mind.

Yasuke is not a samurai. Samurai have a family name, but Yasuke has only a first name, Yasuke has only a first name. In the remaining documents, there is no uniformity in the description of his status. However, it is clear that he is not a samurai. Yasuke was not a legendary warrior (samurai), but rather a minor retainer (servant) among Oda Nobunaga's vassals. If Yasuke was a samurai, his surname is also recorded, as is the case with Anjin Miura. It is unusual for a foreigner to be recognized as a samurai of high nobility in Japan. The "Sonkei Kakuhon" says, "A black man was taken as a vassal (retainer or servant) by Nobunaga-sama and received a stipend. His name was Yasuke. He was also given a dagger and a house. He was also given a dagger and a house. He was allowed to use only a short sword of 30 cm or shorter, and was not allowed to use two daggers. Nibonzashi are long swords (60 cm or longer) and wakizashi (30 cm or longer but shorter than 60 cm). Only samurai were allowed to wear nibonzashi. From the literature of the time, it is clear that he was only a vassal (retainer or servant) and not a samurai. The dagger was for his own protection. According to documents and paintings of the time, Yasuke was a private samurai servant, a yoseko (a minor or intermediate samurai), and a minor (umbrella-bearer, spear-bearer, baggage bearer), and even if he was given a high position, the highest he was given was probably intermediate (chugen), which is "above the common people and below the samurai". I wonder if this was a special case where he was a military servant directly under Nobunaga but was exempted from paying taxes due to his size and fighting ability, or if it was a relationship of indebtedness and service. If I were to put it in a more modern way, I would say. "Your grace is too good to be a slave! Yasufes, why don't you quit your job at Valignano's and come to my place? If you come to us, we will release you from your slave status, give you a house, and even allow you to wear a special sword! We are basically a meritocracy, so if you work hard, you'll be able to own a castle too! Because you're so strong! But I'm probably the only lord with a black vassal at the moment, and I want to show him off, so for now, you'll just have to do small jobs like carrying luggage! But if it comes to war, I'll ask you to fight, but if it comes to war, I'll ask you to fight! But if it comes to war, you'll have to fight for me, so please do it then! I think that was his intention. Nobunaga first learned of the existence of the black race, and when he saw the black YASUFE for the first time, he said, "What's wrong? You are dirty. Let him wash your body even though you are a slave! What? Is this the color of your skin? Oh no, not again! 😂 Then let's wash your body now! ...That was for real! What? Looks like charcoal! Like a cow! It's so black and shiny!" I'm sure there are people who would be outraged "in the modern sense" if they knew he said that. That's what poly-college tends to do to history these days. Disney's Pocahontas and Mulan are not historical facts! If someone who has not studied the history of Yasuke and Japan properly makes a film, there will be nothing but animosity. Please stop trying to change the history of our country Japan by using fantasy in the form of games and movies. I am a typical Japanese and cannot speak English, so I translated it at DeepL.

I’m asking this question in the most respectful way, but how do we actually know Yasuke was actually African and not Indian? After all the Portuguese did have Indian servants and we know Yasuke was in India before he came over to Japan. From what I can tell all sources simply indicated Yasuke was dark skinned, but there are many Indians who are as dark or darker than Africans. Is there anything that would help actually indicate whether Yasuke was one or the other?
@BeardGrizzly
@BeardGrizzly 22 күн бұрын
I believe in Metatron's first video on the topic, accounts of Yasuke say his skin was dark as ink and was a giant. While this doesn't discount anyone from India, it would at least scale to Africa a bit more. But he says some of this a second time here, while we are still unsure of most accuracy to begin with. Basically: we will never know minus accounts that will give a vague sense. It's what makes history fascinating, which I think is lost on so many today. Who would have thought that this would have been a question so far into the future of those that saw him?! It's incredible.

@@Egg_of_the_King The term blackamoor was used to refer to black Africans, as far as I know Indians (Dravidians or Hindu) were not classed as Blackamoors. The Europeans saw black Muslims in Africa and classed them as Moorish or blackamoor due to the auxiliary troops used by the Arabs and Berber Moors in the Iberian Peninsula during the Al Andalus period. So keep that in mind. They did make some distinctions as did the Japanese when they depicted Black people and south Asians in the Nanban art.

@@main1033 Well, all historical documents are biased, because they're written by humans with their interpretations of events. The Chronicles of Oda Nobunaga are biased, now important events in History are written by countless people and therefore you can cross-check their narratives and derive at least some factual understanding of what was happening at the time. With Yasuke you can't do this. His irrelevancy to the Sengoku period doesn't permit you to make any good assertions about the man. Which was proven to be true anyway, after those events no one really knows what happened to the man. The word is Hollywood/the media wants to make money and thinks black men and white men as leads will make more money than East Asian men as leads. That is why other Western stories about feudal Japan never focuses on exclusively Japanese people in Japan, but always has to use some white-male lead...like the Last Samurai or the Shogun TV/book series. The media still constantly whitewashes East Asian media/media set in cultural East Asia and find ways to race/culture swap the main characters into people played by European-Caucasian actors while erasing much of the original East Asian characters. See Dragon Ball, Avatar Last Airbender live action film, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, etc. This situation goes back decades, such as when Bruce Lee was denied the role of the character in the Kung Fu series (they chose David Carradine) because he was considered "too Chinese" to play the role of a wandering Shaolin monk. They chose John Wayne to play Genghis Khan even though there have been Asian/Asian-American actors in Hollywood since the Silent era of film. The new Netflix show the Three Body Problem was based on a Chinese novel series where the first book almost entirely takes place in 1970s China and 2000s China. What did Netflix do? They erased the entire modern 2000s Chinese setting to set it in the United Kindom instead, got rid of basically all of the Chinese characters, and replaced them with new characters that allowed them to use mostly British actors. For people who are familiar with the books, the two different Chinese settings were unique and are supposed to be thematically and philsophically contrasting with each other to represent different values and perspectives...so they are not only race & culture swapping, but they're also erasing key themes and philosophical viewpoints of the story.

Yasuke should have been like Leonardo da Vinci or Mary Reed in that he is someone we occasionally meet and even come to associate with, but he is not the main character.

Not even looking into the differences between Shintoism and Buddhism, the two most common religions in Japan. 4:13 Sitting on a kuza was the manner of sitting in those days. Seiza is a later custom. Tatami mats are basically rectangular. Square tatami mats are used to fill in puzzles such as the centre and are not generally used 4:55 Yasuke's armour is luxurious and in the class of a samurai general It's too luxurious for Yasuke, who wasn't given a surname like William Adams, who was a bannerman. For realism, it should be something plain like the black armour provided by his brothers 6:46 Samurai shave their heads to improve the ventilation of their helmets Dreads would be very stuffy. 7:23 Female ninja are basically walking shrine maidens, who are secret agents (they work as prostitutes on the side to get information out of them) Your brother's right about the way the bare field sword is hung, and the women walk in a stately manner. It's very conspicuous. 18:45 The shoji frames are too big If the outer shoji were this big, they would tear easily in the wind and rain. They should be a little thinner to guarantee strength. 17:48 Your brother is right, ninja and warriors is a game enemy expression. At the time, most of the work was done mainly by secret agents, and ninja warriors were a later creation. Well, it's a game. I. Must say, i really am so thankful to see you finally make this video, i too was a bit weirded bout this introduction of Yasuke here. I will say that Yasuke was indeed a real character but not by what people think he really is. Im so. Grateful you provided your professional commentary. I didnt mind Yasuke but i definitely felt like this wasn't done to be very historically accurate and respectful to Japanese culture here. 3 details i noticed here That is : - That modern looking black hair. I knew there was something off about it, if this was supposed to be historically accurate, then they have sadly fumbled the bag on that by pushing this very modern look on him and not the actual feudal black hair he had. (thanks for bringing up what he looked like) - The African American identity. Already why ubisoft?? He was not American here. He is pure African here as stated he came from Nigeria here (if i got the country in Africa wrong, pleaee correct me here). As a south african, i always hate when they list pure African people as African American here - Now they have confirmed Yasuke is LGBT. Idk much about this sexuality thing but im pretty sure this was barely a concept and if there's that one image of Yasuke with a family we have to treat it as a fact. Then this is already historically inaccurate here. As a bisexual man here, i dont like seeing people shoehorning a sexuality onto an established character. But then again, this is still something i know a bit barely here. A new detail i learnt that you brought up here is the difference with Bushi and samurai here. That's so cool mate. And i believe this is the reason why there's so many arguments going around here. The Western audio has such a fixed view of what a samurai is. If only all these people saw this video. They would began to understand better. Thanks metaton. I really enjoyed this video. Great commentary here. I learned quite a lot here. Im definitely on both sides of the spectrum of this argument. Even for those who are supporting the idea of Yasuke being a samurai here, we have to agree, that they are sadly tarnishing a said real character with those 3 points i mentioned. Ubisoft should have done a bit more research into this said Yasuke here. Thanks friend. Have a great day here ♥ 🐀
