I hope the meta verse never becomes a thing and stays crap. It’s genuinely disturbing and I can see how it would open the door to something horrible.
@bradlasalle28882 жыл бұрын
So you hope it doesn't improve and becomes something amazing that benefits society in some way? Strangely pessimistic position to have, wanting something to stay bad just because you don't like that it's bad. Also what is "something horrible"? Everyone here adopting a dystopian view of this thing as if it's government sponsored and will become mandatory for everyone to be using the metaverse 24/7 when it releases.
@iranam10042 жыл бұрын
@@bradlasalle2888 How is it not dystopian? Giant corporations are not trying to "benefit society", they are slowly replacing and monetizing basic physical behavior. Today, if you don't use social media, you practically don't exist. Corporations have basically succeeded at monetizing social interactions. Tomorrow, it's gonna be physical activities. It should crash and burn with no second chance. If Facebook succeeds at replacing and monetizing physical activities, we will enter the dystopia people wrote books and directed movies about. And don't worry, it's not gonna be all neon colors and cyberpunk aesthetics. It's just gonna be really dull and depressing.
@bradlasalle28882 жыл бұрын
@@iranam1004 Because nobody's forcing you to use something like the Metaverse. The only way tons of people will be "stuck" in it would be if it was actually immersive, well made, or good in some other way. If you think you "practically don't exist" without social media, you're the one that's brainwashed here. What do you think people did just a few years ago before social media was as popular as it was? You're acting like reality didn't exist before social media. Tell me how Facebook would possibly force people to immerse themselves in their Metaverse to the point where all their physical activity is controlled by them? Makes absolutely no goddamn sense.
@iranam10042 жыл бұрын
@@bradlasalle2888 I was saying that as if Facebook succeeded at monetization. Whether with a good metaverse or not. Besides, of course the real world didn't go anywhere. I'm saying that social media made a more efficient way of social interaction. Why bother going to your relative's house when you can just greet him on a WhatsApp group and send a heart emoji or something. Real world didn't go anywhere, we just got distant. Now imagine this, but with a giant well-made VR world. Although, Facebook is too fucking incompetent to do that at the moment, which I'm glad. Besides, you keep saying that "no one's forcing you to do anything" but obligation is a dangerous concept. When you force someone to do something, you awaken the primal instinct humans have at retaliation. That's why no one wants to be lectured at. Companies know this, unfortunately. So they use the force of obligation. Sure, you're not forced to interact with your peers on the internet, but you're obligated to. In fact, no one's forcing you to use any electronics or consume any visual media, but why wouldn't you? Everyone's doing it, so why don't you do? So you do it, and do it, and keep doing it, until you're stuck in it. Now this thing that barely contributed to your life is now consuming it. No one forced you to be addicted, but you are now, thanks to the power of obligation.
@bradlasalle28882 жыл бұрын
@@iranam1004 I think you're conflating advancement with addiction which is kinda weird. Everyone uses electronic devices today because they're affordable and the technology is stable enough to support it. The reason people didn't use smartphones 50 years ago wasn't because they had more self control or something, they just didn't have the option. That'd be like trying to say we're addicted to light bulbs now because every home is full of them rather than using torches or sunlight alone. We can't both advance technologically but for some reason choose to not use any of that technology, that just makes no sense. I've failed to see any sound logic in your argument so far. Are we addicted to motor vehicles because just about everyone takes a car, bus, or uber to work? Not everyone has the time to visit their peers face to face. Social media and smartphones create an opportunity where one wouldn't be without it. It's unrealistic to assume you'd spend as much time in person with your relatives that live halfway across the country versus communicating with them over social media.

Even as an introvert, I find this horrifying. The day that ever comes when I'd rather hang out in some creepy vr chat hellscape full of legless animated cringelords than like, actually hanging around a campfire or in a friends living room or something would be a sad day indeed. I don't hang with people often, but when I do, I like the feel of real face to face connection, with a cold beer in my hand, a nice fire or something, or on the shores of a lake or ocean or something, or hell even under a carport in the front of a house. This metaverse crap can never compete with that for me, and never will. I'd sooner cut myself off from the internet completely than let myself fall victim to that nonsense.

@bignashi2 жыл бұрын
Yall are gonna be eating your words when vr immersion is comparable to real life. I feel like we're only 5-10 years away from that. Also, nobody will use the metaverse to replace normal human connection. It's yet another way to globalize socializing. You're reacting now the same way boomers did to the internet and social media. The skepticism will change once everyone joins the bandwagon. But yeah, the ad sucks. They should've emphasized the angle of being able to re-connect with long distance friends on a more personal level. That is 100% what I will use the metaverse (or whatever company takes up the vr mantle) for so I don't have to go all the way to Germany to hang out with my bestie.
@mumuspain20862 жыл бұрын
@@bignashi nah, sorry, just don't agree. I also think we are way more than 5-10 years away from vr being anywhere close to real life. Being able to turn your head to look at something, and hold something in your hand that lets you interact with objects, is nowhere close to real life. To make things realistic, you would need an incredibly advanced omnidirectional treadmill, some sort of suit or something that tracked all of your body movement, and too many other peripherals to count to offer anything close to real life. This means like $20,000 or more of hardware. Only like, a few thousand people worldwide would spend that kind of cash for something unproven. Full dive would be cool, but at this stage in scientific development we don't even fully understand how the brain works, so full dive technology is just a fantasy for the time being

@@mumuspain2086 1. omnidirectional vr treadmills already exist and they are really fucking cool 2. no we aren’t that far away.. i would argue 10-13 years at most (especially considering vr has only been a thing for what? like only 3 or 4 years maybe 5 and we’ve already come so far) 3. Again, i think his point was to say that it isn’t replacing face to face human interaction but rather making it easier to socialize with people that you LITERALLY CANNOT see face to face (like if you have online friends that you met and they live in another country) 4. nobody is forcing anybody to use vr.. and nobody will ever force anybody to use vr. so if you’re really that afraid of it then you don’t ever have to use it….

The fact that the message “escape your miserable reality” is consistent in their advertizing makes me think it’s one guy responsible for ads or even the whole project. I think he’s a less than happy person (could be Zuck himself)

Or maybe the take away is... The people who designed Metaverse made reality miserable. 🤔

Given Facebook treated reality very poorly in more ways than one... it would make sense for this Meta shit to be escapist. I reckon the idea was that they thought the pandemic's state of social interactions was going to be the new status quo, thus explaining this push but there's way better ways to hang around with your mates online, some places have already loosened their restrictions and, quite frankly, who wants to deal with more of Facebook's shit?

If Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t an evil robot that wants to destroy Humanity, I’d think this metaverse is like ending of the series Sillicon Valley (spoiler alert) where they purposefuly make their product fail in the most spectacular way possible, so that nobody else will ever try to replicate it. Thus saving Humanity from falling into the dystopian nightmare of living solely in VR.
