Do you have any advice on breaking a bad habit of tilting your shoulders when you do sweeps or passages dealing with lots of cross overs from 3 and 4

Make sure you're not lifting your wrist too high for cross-overs. If you're over lifting, that may be why you're lifting your shoulders. Keep your wrists down and as close as possible to each other. Also, if you need to lift a little more, lift from your elbow. That is a natural hing and should feel natural. Your shoulder is not a hinge. If none of those are the issue, then I'd consider lowering your drum to give your elbows more room to bend upwards, but first and foremost I'd check the lift in your hands. Hope that helps 👍

No one ever told me this, and it's probably one reason why my scrapes don't sound the best... I wish I knew this when I was first learning...

Are there situations where you have to break the wrist?

Yes, there is a small list of exceptions however I do not advise you use/try them until you have a strong understanding of the fundamentals. They should be used sparingly and consciously and the only way to do that is by knowing that for 95% of what you're playing is with good technique/motion fundamentals.
