We’ll only say it’s a record warm month if it is a record warm month. It is, of course, too early to tell but, at this stage it looks highly unlikely to beat June 2023, which was the warmest June on record. More likely, this month will end up close to or a little below average for June.

I know it's unlikely in the near future, but if we do get record months will you mention by how much,ie in fractions of a degree Celsius and why it is so? People like me who have seen quite a lot of weather because I'm in my mid fifties, struggle to understand how some months are record highs when we've known much warmer weather.For instance, I find it hard to believe last month was a warmer May than the one in 2003 or 1994 or 1989

@@metoffice Being warm in places nobody lives doesn't make it a warm month for the people of Britain. If Rockall is 10 degrees above average but London is 9 degrees below average don't tell us that it is above average temps when we all know it was cold. You need a a population weighted analysis rather than simple land area total otherwise we end up with the ridiculous claims for May that it was a record hot month when everyone who actually went outside knows it wasn't. Could may have been warm where the people aren't? Sure. Was is warm where the people are? Obviously not.

Eh, it's called climate change. Warmer global temperatures means more moisture in the air, more extreme and changeable weather patterns. Gone are the weather patterns of my youth - snow which lasted for 1 week or two most winters, summer days with sunshine, blue skies and occassional short, sharp showers - the weather is more unsettled now than I remember it being.

I started going skiing in the Alps in the late 70s, and you could guarantee that you could book a week at either Christmas or Easter and find deep snow on all the runs in places like Val d'Isere or Cervinia. That's no longer the case, and many ski resorts in the Alps are closing down. I don't need to see the science reports to know it's true - I've seen things change with my own eyes in my lifetime.

@jimparlett4099
@jimparlett4099 10 күн бұрын
Climate change has 2 significant impacts: firstly, the jet stream depends partly on the temperature difference between the polar and temperate regions. The poles are warming faster than the rest of the planet by quite a margin, so the jet streams (North and south) are weaker and therefore meander and oscillate more, leading to more changeable weather. Secondly, warmer air holds more moisture (7% more for each degree Celsius) so rain is more likely and heavier.

That is to say: there is evidence that the Gulf Stream (or, more precisely, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) has been weakening. But there’s no evidence that the UK is getting colder as a result. A week of northerly winds isn’t evidence that the UK is getting colder. All of the last few summers have been significantly warmer than normal and Spring 2024 was the warmest on record, following the 7th warmest winter.
