Five years ago, the #MeToo movement reached Bollywood. News of sexual harassment and assault allegations followed. Has anything changed since then?
India's film industry produces more than a thousand movies annually. The films are watched by 3 billion people worldwide - and are loved for their song and dance sequences, emotional story lines and larger-than-life narratives.
But if you take a closer look, the picture is less bright: Bollywood was rocked by allegations of #MeToo against several prominent producers, directors, actors and celebrities. But only a handful of cases reached court.
Calling out served as a death knell for some careers, not necessarily the ones who were accused but the ones who were whistle-blowers. DW’s Akanksha Saxena and Neerat Kaur report.

Tanushree Dutta started it, i think or was a major voice of it. I don't hear about her now but the people she blamed are still by and large in this industry.

Great documentary! I myself am guilty of the historical amnesia i underwent… Nana Patekar, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher, goodness. Forgot about it all. Sona’s story is so heartbreaking. She was punished for speaking out and the others just got away as if nothing ever happened. This doc coming out all these years later is somehow more effective. One critique- the voice of the lady doing the voiceover is a little vexing. It’s flat and doesn’t engage me as a listener. But overall very well done! Thank you to the makers for creating this.

The strict laws against speaking out against injustice exists not only in Bollywood or even India, but in any patriarchy. One of the hallmarks of patriarchy is that the individual should accept whatever happens and be afraid of the majority. As for my nation India, it's still an extreme patriarchy. You are expected to change for the system in place. The system doesn't have to change in order to accommodate you.

Yes bollywood is as dis gus ting as hollywood if not more and i say this because atleast many hollywood celebrities are open about their life while in india the celebrites lead worse lifes but yet act all morally high and try to boss around people by telling them what to do. Also in these cases it is important to remember that there are many who willingly not only got into such lewd relationships but also initiated them for the benefit of their career and alike but later when they realised that simply due to their lack of talent the people weren't accepting them they played the victim and started balme gaming. Ofcourse all cases arent like that and there are those in which innocent boys and girls were put in a comfortable situation by monsters and that is terrible but i doubt most of them will ever get justice and it is sad to almost definitely know so because thats how influential bollywood is in india. Indians like to treat their cricketers, actors and politicians as almost god figures. This is what I noticed while living there.

Consultants for intimacy ???? Something which should be potrayed as natural and normal requires intermediaries because the indian mentality and society still does not come round to accept sexuality. That is a fact but film makers want to titilate and then play " holier than thou".

Hope that these women and others don’t get discouraged, change starts with resistance and attempts at maintaining Status-quo. Salute to you all for standing boldly and bringing the truth out. Keep it up.
