Elliot's original was magical, transformative, fragile. However, I love Metric as well and I feel Emily made Elliot smile wherever he is with this one.

I love this cover, it's not only beautiful but it's the reason I looked up Elliott Smith in the first place. Of course now I hold Smith far higher in my estimations than Metric but I still feel this cover is pretty brilliant.

2023 I'm here ..

In some ways I prefer this to Madeleine Peyroux's version. I has a raw, sincere quality that one lacks. There's no question Peyroux has the sweeter voice, and the more skillful arrangement. What I like about the Emily Haines version is her comparative unselfconsciousness. Peyroux tries too hard at stretching out every last syllable for Effect, and it wears on my patience. Both are charming in their way.
