Before the pandemic, the idea of METRO’s “Bus Rapid Transit” was the cornerstone of the public transportation agency’s future plans.
But this week, METRO, under new, seemingly more fiscally responsible leadership, shelved plans to build the next leg of the “BRT” line.
The University Line is being shelved after the Silver Line, the proof-of-concept line that opened along North Post Oak, near the Galleria, has failed to attract more than 90% of the riders that were promised.

Should have made it a Rail line

No. Hardly anyone rides metro rail

Would not have made a difference - the ridership is low because there is very little demand in that area to go north/south past the galleria and poor connectivity for park and ride options. BRT is not just cheaper than rail, it is more adaptable (rail cannot run express), but metro spent all this money to connect two small transit centers with no demand to go between them.

You have apparently never been in the medical center on the afternoon. The metro train is packed with riders@verticegirferd5069

Houston is the MOST car dependent city in North America. I have a car and a bike and I still catch the bus to the airport. Quite responsive and consistent. However, the layout of Houston doesn’t encourage people to catch the bus when you live in Galleria but work in Tomball. Austin’s and Dallas bus systems go into neighboring cities. The Metro doesn’t take you to The Woodlands, Sugarland, Katy or Pasadena. That’s one of the problems. Not everyone lives in Houston.

The problem is that most of the neighboring cities are either outside of Harris County (Woodlands, Sugarland) or do not authorize the required sales taxes to become part of Metro (Pasadena).

Wonder why metro doesn't have routes outside some areas. Like humble hummm

Humble probably needs to approve the required sales tax increase to become part of METRO.

If you would add MetroRail in the same area, you would have more ridership.. it will bring more interest, MetroRail has to be the main factor. Houstonian’s want to get to their destinations quicker… time is at the essence..

Rail would make no difference - people do not make the choice to ride rail over brt, especially when rail takes longer between trains than brt between buses. There is just no demand for a line like this that connects to transit stations. We would do better to focus on expanding the existing rail lines, connecting to Hobby, and pushing brt/rail west

@@cxa340 all they would need to do is sync the Bus time with the MetroRail time & ridership would be better, used to live in the Bay Area (S.F.) & that's how BART (Train) MUNI (Bus) are sync exactly

People not being in office buildings for 4 years now is why, the employees of buildings. People don’t want to go to back to office spaces so it’s less staff and so less blue collar workers to pay for the buses. Covid caused a lot of this

Why they put it in this area makes no sense at all. Why put it outside the loop in a rich area? Connect the Heights to NRG, West University to East End, Kashmere Gardens to UH to begin with.

Ayeee this my favorite place, give it some time people will ride and use the bus but at this moment most people don’t have jobs close to the area so they have to drive a car but soon more jobs will come and this place will provide more opportunities
