I find it kind of ironic that a city that is known worldwide for fashion & design - Milan - has such an ugly metro.

@@NorthSea_1981 it’s actually very nice, but the original design of m1 and m2’s platforms was very old, so this is why it got refurbished recently

I didn't pay attention to that, but it seems they began to install new gates with a different design in 2019, starting with the M2 stations: www.trainsfare.eu/milan-tackle-subway-fare-evasion-upgrading-service-gates/ (if that's what you mean)

There's no faregates if you're coming from the platforms for a transfer; faregates are only between the surface accesses and the stairs to the plaforms. You might walk next to them them because for some transfers you might have to get up one level and then down to the other platforms, but you don't have to cross them if you're just changing line and not leaving the station. The only cases when you have to stamp the ticket again, is at the metro stations that connect to the passante, the suburban railway tunnel that crosses the city; there you have to re-stamp the ticket because the passante is operated by the national railways rather than the city transport authority, and specifically only if you have to go from metro to train or the other way around, never from metro to metro. As for why these stations have two different mezzanines (that is, the above platform levels with the faregates), it's because the lines were built in different times, and each comes with its own set of entrances and facilities. Duomo in particular has quite a large tunnel system under the square.
