The game that started it all. Metroid was originally released all the way back in 1986 and kicked off the entire franchise as well as an entire subgenre of gaming. Is the classic as good as it was 35 years ago, or has it fallen victim to the sands of time? (Spoiler alert, I think it's the second one.)

You can tell this person is doing this because they’re passionate about it, and not just because they feel obligated to do it to make more money, if you look at the subscriber count. This is a passion video, not a monetary venture. I couldn’t believe how underrated this channel was when I saw how well edited the videos on it are. Massive props to the channel creator.

Interesting fact about repetitiveness: those identical areas aren't so much copy-pasted as literally on the exact same memory location in the ROM. Metroid split the game into large segments that were reused to save on storage space while inflating the world size. By the way, the reason Metroid used a password system on the NES is because saves via battery backups were new at the time, meaning presumably they didn't have enough time to add the feature. (The Legend of Zelda, which came out around the same time in North America, was the first to use that feature.) The Japanese release of Metroid was actually for the Famicom Disk System, an important detail because that add-on, due to the fact that games were stored on (re-writable) floppy disks, facilitated saving just by writing directly to the game disk. A lot of titles in the Japanese market achieved saving in that way.

The original version of Kraids theme is definitely the best in my opinion as well!

Those damn spaghetti O's tho... Great video. Yes, Metroid Prime is amazing. Glad it got you into the series. Let's hope for the Trilogy to be released soon before Metroid Prime 4.

I love Metroid, LOVE IT. I actually pre-ordered Super Metroid back in 1994. Just to set the scene, no one pre-ordered games back then. I actually went to my local mom and pop shop, explained how much I wanted it, and gave them the full amount just so they’d hold a copy for me. … but here’s the thing, I always thought Metroid on the NES was a proof of concept. I knew there was a kernel of an amazing game there but it was rough even back in the 80s. A lot of games do age well… Metroid does not, imo. I think it was simply a situation of a game that was too ahead of its time. It’s weird too because it shares so much in common with Zelda which has aged okay. I think it’s the fact that it was a platformer rather than a top down game. Made respect for it but just play Zero Mission. I love retro games but some do NOT hold up.

8:51 as someone who has grown up with this game, I love it dearly, but I am not so blinded by nostalgia that I can't see its flaws. And they are quite glaring.

I agree so much about how badly it's aged. I've tried to play through it a few times, I just can't do it. This and Zelda 1 are two classic NES games, I just struggle to enjoy. At least I've beaten Zelda 1 and it has a map sort of. Maybe I'll force myself through it one of these days. I just bought a disc system so maybe I'll pick up that version of Metroid, not that I expect a save feature instead of a password system to solve the core problems of everything looking the same.

Ive listened to all of your videos because theyre well written/narrated and i find them enjoyable even if DKC1/2/3 are the only games that I've played. Eith that said youve sold me on playing super metroid and any metroid that i can reasonably get my hands on. I do wish Nintendo hsd better support snd availability for their older games, however. Id love to own a digital copy of zero mission on switch rather than jist renting one.

Nice video, dude! While I will admit that Metroid NES is janky... I actually kinda like the idea of navigating without a map. Having no map tests my sense of direction and location, even if room structures are repeated. That's just me, of course, but it's a big reason why I could see myself playing Metroid NES again.

You don't get wave beam. It's the best weapon you'll never use, because the ice beam has too much utility to be replaced.

Video games were different back then. Imagination filled in the gaps left by graphical limitations. You had a pen and paper handy at all times. The playground was where you swapped secrets and passwords. Lucky kids had Nintendo Power magazine or one of those pictureless strategy guides from the book store.

"Doesn't hold a candle to the size and scope of Zebus" Ya, that size is mostly because many many copy pasted rooms, with no map, that make it hard to even know where you are or remember where you haven't been, because it all looks the same.

I can attest to Mother Brain being a bitch to fight. I got there without cheat codes at the age of 6 or 7 and then died. I could have written down the password but I was so exhausted I just gave up. It wasn't until about 10 years later that I actually beat the game (without cheat codes).

Even though this game is *_incredibly_* guilty of copy-n-paste level design, I still somehow managed to commit this entire planet to memory, to the point that my record time is somewhere around 2 hours (and yes, i did sequence break for the Varia Suit).

i know this is over 2yo at this point but need to issue a correction, the crash was a western thing, there really didnt need to be a 'saving of the gaming insutry' in japan cause it was still doing just fine, hell the arcade scent still beling alive there is a testament to the fact it never crashed there

Impossible to ebat without outside help? Beat this a year ago by making my own map on paper, marking rooms I cant get inside of etc to return later. I found it actually quite enjoyable from exploring and drawing my own map. Although I can see thats not something most players would even considering doing and yeah a map inside the game would been great, but thats what zero mission is for. Easier game to play and more modern but the 8 bit one is hard and takes some patience and skill, if one want a harder challenge: I would argue its still holds up quite well. :)

The original Metroid has really not aged very well. While it was a great starting point to something much better, the game feels clunky, loose with its controls, the difficulty unfair and progression cryptic as all hell. But!, I could forgive all of these shortcoming if it was not for one really major issue and that is how the game starts you out with just 30HP an almost no missiles, regardless of how many expansions you've collected. As if dying wasn't annoying enough, it really just feels like a kick to the balls when the game then practically forces you to waste the next 15 or so minutes with killing and collecting power pellets and missiles from enemy spawners. It is simply just bad and tedious game design and it's the one thing that really keeps me from wanting to play the game for very long. Hell, when you die in the last area of the game to a Metroid of Mother Brain, there is no way to regain your resources, so you first have to leave the place and backtrack to even get to an area with an enemy spawner to stock up on resources again. It's such a minor little thing but it would completely change the game from being a chore to being somewhat tolerable.

I like your insights but when you add loud memes and screaming into your videos its really distracting and annoying. I respect KZfaqrs who don't look for cheap laughs with loud volume and lame jokes. Your content is good enough on its own!
