With Ten Stories, mewithoutYou comes to a somewhat underwhelming middle-ground with the post-hardcore and folk influences that informed the band's previous two records.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Anthony, listen to it again. I struggled with this album the first few listens as well. But it gets better the more I listen to it. A quality of what I find to be the albums that really stand the test of time. And I think this is the first stage in the band's evolution into a place where they can very easily blend between the mellow folly stuff and then back into the heavier stuff seamlessly. The dynamics of this album are what make it great. And I feel like they are still flashing out what they are trying to do. And what it means to be mewithoutYou. I can listen to this album front to back without being unhappy at any point. Solid 9.

I saw these guys when they toured with Touché Amouré and Aaron's passion overshadows so much of the "flaws" in Ten Stories. Lyrically, I think this album expanded into more universal ideas, such as the most prevalent, gospel story. I'd say 7.

Dang man. It really sucks to know people cant experience this album like have. I mean, if I could have you experience it like I have, I would, because Im always thinking about it and always craving to just come back to the emotion of it. These stories are my favorite out of any of the albums, just because there are lives or characters with beautiful and dark subterranean aspects created. I mean, each song is a fable, a satire, skimming across the surface of man with these tattered animals.

Bears vision is one of my favorite mwy songs. This album takes some time but there's really not a "bad " song on it. I think they found a good medium in between brothers and it's all crazy that in my opinion works really well. Mwy grows with every album and a lot of people are expecting another a/b or catch us when they've moved way beyond that. Not that those albums didn't rock but it was also ten years ago. I feel like I've literally grown through my 20s with this band. I personally like the changes that were made and am excited to see whats next. I'd give it a strong 8/10

There were a couple songs on this album that I didn't even enjoy until I understood the context of the lyrics and started listening to the whole album all at once every time I listened to them. Both of those things made me fall in love with this album. Light 9.

Read up on Derridean post-structuralism and Hegelian self-identity in light of community (or lack thereof). Your mind will be blown. This is absolutely the most lyrically impressive LP they have released, as it implements these philosophies in a perfectly overarching allegory that emphasizes longevity of characterization not seen in earlier mwY releases.

I'm really happy you reviewed this album, Mewithoutyou has been a favorite of mine for years and I always feel like they go overlooked because they don't really settle with one genre or crowd too well. As far as this album goes, I wish it had those disturbing realizations they had in earlier albums, like you said, but I also feel like that comes from the band being older now and their life experiences probably dont have that pure adolescent frustration brewing quite as much.

After one listen, I didn't know what to think, but listening to it in one sitting for the second time, I've come around to really admiring this album. I've been a huge mwY fan since A-B Life and this seems like a satisfying middle-ground between the old and the new. I can fully respect their ventures into new sounds or ideas and I think this album continues that exploration with beautiful reminicence of previous albums. It reminds me of Catch for Us the Foxes in terms of musical style in a way

Wow. You really know your stuff. I love the band mewithoutYou, and have really been delving into the background behind a lot of their lyrics (such as Bawa Muhaiyaddeen and the background for Ten Stories). Aaron is such an intellectual, and it's easy to see how his studies and background have driven his lyrics, from Ten Stories all the way back. This album was definitely more focused on the story and less on Aaron personally - I don't think it's fair to look at this album and expect it to be like their old ones considering they went into the creative process with a different end goal. While everything you said about their discography was on point, this one should be categorized more with It's All Crazy than Brother, Sister on back. This album in particular, I find the lyrics a little difficult to appreciate. I love the overall story line, and like you said it's a very arc driven story, but because of the flowery language it can be difficult to understand the big picture at times. I definitely about February 1878, Elephant in the Dock, Bears Vision of St Agnes, and All Circles. By far the best on the album. I think I cared more about the overall story and let that affect my decision. 7.5/10 for me.

I don't know this should get at least an 8. I find these songs to be memorable, and go through with such a distinct progression, as each story takes shape putting all the pieces together. Maybe the lyrics aren't as personable because its more about the concept of it all, and the animals tales. I find that whole idea so neat. Just my opinion I suppose...

I agree with you about the change in the lyrics, they are definitely not as painful and powerful as their older albums; but I don't mind it, I think regardless of how much power there is in them, Aaron Weiss is creating a fascinating world. Especially in Fox's Dream-- I've never heard a song with such imagery. All the songs, basically, are like that... super surreal, not very true-to-life, but still so interesting that it's like experiecing a really strange dream. I loved Ten Stories for that.

Really liked your review probably because all your opinions mirrored my own.. literally everything from the Jacob's ladder quote, to the underwhelming nature of this disk, to the backtracking opinions of their past albums and styles. You sir have earned my respect for your editing and analytical thought process! One odd thing I've noticed of mwY is that I yearn to love their music til I truly love their music but it always depends on how much passion is in a song for its re-listen-ability.

Haven't listened to Mewithoutyou since Brother, Sister in 2006. Catch For Us The Foxes is one of my favorite high school albums of all time. Glad to see this band is still making music. An outstanding live band with an eccentric and quirky frontman. Gave this album a listen on Spotify, and still more of the same from the band(which isnt necessarily a bad thing). Felt like I never stopped listening to them. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but a fun album. Thanks Anthony.

For me, it seemed like mewithoutYou was trying to progress musically with this album, but they had no idea where they were going. I am a hardcore mewithoutYou fan, but I was pretty disappointed. They ended up sounding almost like everybody else, and not themselves. However, there were like you said, a pocket-full of great songs; my favorites being Aubergine, Fox's Dream... and Circles.

From a musical perspective they're equal for me. I love both albums to death but the maturity and pure REAL emotion that's put into Wildlife has never been matched by anything I've heard. I talked to Aaron about 6 months ago when I saw them and asked him about the album and he said he was actually having a really hard time writing some of the words. He said they had already written all the music, but he was struggling to come up with words for some of the songs. I feel like that probably had a lot to do with the unusual lack of conviction in his singing/speaking/yelling. Overall I thought it was a good album. They're one of my favorite bands but I agreed with everything you said

Goo review. I agree that it was not the best album. The songs on Other Stories, an ep that came with the deluxe edition of this album, was worth checking out. Songs on there are "Four Fires" and "Julian the Onion". They are both worth listening to. I did not really like "Cardiff Giant" that much, but there are a lot of other songs I really like. I think the reason that the tracks are less depressing is because of what A.W. said about trying to avoid the feeling and be more happy in his songs.

Mewithoutyou is absolutely my number 1 band. 'Catch for us' and 'Brother, Sister' are far and away my favorite albums. 'It's All Crazy' is interesting because even though the previously mentioned are my top albums, 'Crazy' has 3 or 4 of my favorite individual songs (Fox/Crow, Beetle King, etc). '10 Stories' I like more as an album than 'Crazy' but none of the songs live up to anything from previous albums (for me at least).

I would personally give it a 8 or 9. I absolutely love this album, but sometimes the lyrics can be hard to decipher. Its not their best(that was Brothers, Sisters or Foxes), but it is definitely their fourth best album. But the problem is that Brothers, Foxes, Stories, and Crazy are pretty much at the same level, and only differ on my mood.
