Fun fact: Almost all medical word in English come from Greek words. For example bronchitis in Greek is bronchitida. Also, math, astrology and astronomy where really advanced in ancient Greece. When other people thought that the whole star system was spinning around earth, ancient Greeks knew the earth and the planets moved around the sun.

Cheers from Greece man! What you said about your mother and her describing Greece was so sweet. I do think that we have a very beautiful country that unfortunately has been plagued by so many factors and now we are just struggling. Yes, the issue with Turkey stems from the Ottoman Empire although the relationship between the two countries and the people today could have been a lot better if politicians didn't keep adding fuel to the fire and spreading propaganda to their people about how they should hate each other, unfortunately it has worked very well. Although you didn't ask "Mountza" is an open palm gesture which is kinda used like the middle finger in Greece.

Greece was enslaved by the Ottoman empire for 400 years, and countries that have experienced Ottoman enslavement knows that it was barbaric and brutal, to say the least. Today people dont hate people, but the Turkish goverment is constantly harrasing the Greek national airspace etc. But of course we cannot blame or hate the Turkish people for that, all goverments are corrupted in some form. Thank you for your reaction to my country, much love from Greece to Mexico.

400 years? Some regions were under Ottoman slavery for more than 700 years. To speak our language was forbidden, to practice our religion was forbidden...all male children over the age of 7 were forcibly taken away from their families to join the Turkish army, the so-called janissary (new tsars). Those children were brought up as muslems, forced to forget everything that they knew and never to see the families again. You're guessing wrong if you think that their brutality just stopped there! Next was the f-male population. Young girls were taken to be concubines of the Sultan or were sold as slaves all around the world ...Over 20 wοmen with children were cut off their breasts, mutilated in the most horrific ways in order to not have any more kids... You all want to learn more ....? Look at Erdogan....he is 30 % Greek ...But das he says anything, talks about the fact that his grandparents were Greek????? Noooooo...a big no-no...

Ahem, there is a limit on how much one can not blame a people when government elected runs among others on promises to pursue expansionist agenda and specifically targeting Aegean which by international law if brought to Hague international court would be proven once again belongs to Greece but instead they try raise the tones and push then for unilateral two parties negotiations hopping they get some compromises from people who know international law is on their side, so would never agree to such negotiations.

Greece was not "enslaved" but was part of the Ottoman empire. Greece as a territory (because there wasn't an organized Greek state before the revolution of 1821) was part of the Macedonian Kingdom, the Roman Empire and ended up as part the Ottoman Empire. The world back them was organized in Empires and kingdoms...not in country nations. -" and countries that have experienced Ottoman enslavement knows that it was barbaric and brutal, to say the least." -No that is School history-propaganda. Most of the time Greeks had issues with local rules that happened to be Greek.(like we experience today with our corrupted politicians). Things went south only during the last rough economic periods when corrupted officials, mainly from the Balkans , tried to raise funds to deal with external threats. Now I have news for you....Our air force does the same thing. Don't assume this is a one sided issue. After all, with the exception of Cyprus , Greece as a modern state has invaded Turkey more than 2 times.

well about the Macedonian issue it doesnt matter where you went to school Japan or Mexico or somewhere in Africa or in Australia there is one history that teach you the same about Ancient Macedonia or Alexander the great, well those slavs are the only people on earth that doesnt accept the worlds history and believe in something different WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE AT ALL, so if you really want to have a joke with this issue dont keep the same distance between the two sides. On one side is the history wroten 3000 years ago by historians and archeologist in now days and on the other side some paranoid people create a fake story by stealing Greece or Bulgarian history

We don’t hate the turkish people, only their government. However for the sake of history the Ottomans did enslaved Greece and they treated greeks like animals, they stole boys from their mothers at a young age to brainwash them and train them to be super soldiers that basically were sent to fight even against their own families (the Janissaries). While the rest of the Europe was advancing, Greece and the rest of the Ottoman occupied countries were left behind both in culture and education, we were stuck in the middle ages. From my point of view it was then when Greece took its downfall, because pretty much from the very beginning when Greece was formed as a group of city states they were basically the first in everything, even during the Byzantine era the greeks were making huge innovations. Like the first liquid fire, or the Cyrillic alphabet that Russians use today and then suddenly all that stops, the Ottomans took over. Now it’s a little sensitive topic since Turkey turned Hagia Sofia into a mosque which was an insult to Christianity and they are claiming all of the Aegean. But yeah we don’t hate them rather than we are tired of their shit, they disrespect neighboring countries in every way possible and it’s getting annoying

We are not canivals who put the sceletones on display. But in the big cities where there is not much space available, 3 to 5 years after the funeral (when the body has been desolve) the bobes are taken and are put in separate boxes and are taken to a room where they are kept to be safe. In small cities or villages this is not so common because there is enough space

Halkidiki (the monster claw) has some of the best beaches in Greece. There was one time that the monks of Mount Athos gave shelter to women and children, (the third finger of Halkidiki he mentioned in the video), and that was during the Greek revolution against the Turks when Greeks lost a battle and knew that Turks will destroy the place where it started, Kassandra (first finger). So many women and children were given refuge so they won't be slaughtered, unfortunately a lot stayed behind and died. We remember that day as the "Kassandra holocaust", cause Turks burn everything. The monks don't allow other women in Athos cause according to the Orthodox belief it's Virgin Mary's Garden and is dedicated to Her. But in several occasions monks say that Virgin Mary, or Panagia as we say here, allowed women and children to find help there.

Also yes when it comes to tourists both of our countries are heavily visited Turkey was even ranked 6th in 2019 somewhere beetwen 50-52milion People visited ,Turkey has a lot of sights that were made be ancient and Medieval Greeks it makes sense because those regions were also Greek territory for centuries.

My friend hallo from Greece. I am sending you an interesting text. The next speech includes 99% greek words used by the English language. «Kyrie, I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Oecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. With enthusiasm we dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Organizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the numismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is charateristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. In parallel a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and harmonization in a democratic climate is basic. I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucharistia to your Kyrie to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Ampitctyony and the gastronomic symposia».

10:21 Good question - part of it is due to that; Greece was under the Ottomans for about 400 years (some regions of Modern Greece were longer), but it’s more to do with the atrocities committed by the Ottomans/Turks - such as the Greek genocide (the largest at the time being the Armenian Genocide), Chios Massacre, Occupation of Turkey, daily threats of violence, and daily overflights by Turkey into Greek airspace, just to name a few. With younger generations, on both sides, relations are getting somewhat better…

The ottoman empire period we call the 400 years of slavery. Many monstrosities happened during those years and in generally you can't take away freedom from a Greek person. Also there were about 1M Greek people in colonies in where Turkey is now (they had been there tho way before turks came to the area) and around the 19th century most of them were slaughtered away. Pontian Greeks especially were around 800.000 and 365.000 of them were killed, for us it's a genocide. It's politics and power games, but because we are a small country the blood shed and torture for us was way greater. That's all. Also the religion Christianity and Muslims.

I don’t know if it hasn’t already been mentioned but Greeks and Turks hate each other for a number of reasons. 1453 fall of Constantinople was kind of the first big thing battles battles battles. Then enslavement under Ottoman Empire and finally in 1972 Turkish troops invade northern Cyprus and now we have that whole mess with the UN buffer zone and the dispute. The Cyprus thing is kind of the most recent controversy between the two and it’s still ongoing. Always remember though it’s only the very nationalistic people and the governments that hate each other.

Greece ofc has some relationship problems with Turkey and yes they do indeed come from their common history, but so do most of the Balkan states. Greece although has more differences to solve with Turkey than the other Balkan states mainly because of their common borders (especially in the sea) and the various former Greek cities Turkey has nowadays under their command, of which the two most famous are Constantinople/Istanbul and Smyrna/Ismir. There are many other reasons for the two countries differences but I think that this is one of the reasons that Greeks and Turks have worse relations than Turks have with the rest of the Balkans. Also I would like to clarify that this is mostly political and historical problems and most of the Greek and Turk civilians don't hate each other (Turks might actually be the closest nation to Greece in terms of culture).

"Damn Greeks, that's kinda dark!" You have no idea my friend hahaha Even though Greece has adopted Orthodoxy, the religious practices are way darker than let's say Catholicism. We still keep some of our former religious elements (12 Olympian Gods and stuff) and use them in everyday life. A small example would be the Apokries (meaning: staying away from meat, a form of fasting) where we wear masks and gather around a huge fire, dance, drink, and have fun. This occurs during the period of the three weeks before Easter celebrations, on the last Sunday, also called Big Sunday we burn the king of clowns, it is a form of driving away bad spirits, hate, and sin. If you take this example and try to compare it with Orthodoxy it seems so different and unusual, but it's a relic of our former religion (it dates back to the celebration of God Dionysus) coexisting with our current one, and if you ask me, I think that's beautiful.

@@gecko3890 I don't use the word dark as something bad or something that's twisted or whatever. I am comparing how I've experienced this custom as a Greek female living in a village all my life, a village that's both close to its Orthodox routes and one that also celebrates Apokries religiously. What I gathered from all those 31 years I have lived and experienced in my place of birth, is that Greek Apokries is not so similar to Halloween or a Catholic Carnival if you dig deeper. Greece as a country has so many diverse ways of celebrating in general and every person may experience this differently but at its core, Apokrees has a bigger depth than people may know or imagine. I have gathered this by conversing with older generations of people, people who remember how this celebration used to look like, let's say, 80 years back. All in all, it was not my intention to make Apokries look like a satanic ritual or something, lol, I just enjoy how diversified our country and its traditions are.

Great video. I want to mention just one thing about the burials that it was innacurate. In Greece we have the cemeteries as anywhere else for burials. We even have the option to burn someone if he prefers. This open thing in the video shows scalps from monasteries. In some monasteries they have these "dark collection" just to remind them death and never get lazy on their spiritual duties. For the rest of the people after three years in the grave, if you pay a fee for every year you can keep the grave or if you don't wish to pay they take the bones into a box with the name of the dead written outside and put it in a building inside the cemetery .The box is closed of course. And that is in the big cities which have problem of space because of high population. Outside the big cities, in villages and small towns you can keep your dead relative for ever into the grave.

Well, obviously greece and turkey are not going along well because of history and religion (so 10 sentences to describe a 600+ years history). Greeks were orthodox since the times of the Eastern Roman Empire ("Byzantine"). The empire fell into the hands of the muslim Turks. Religion was very important because it was what separated the two nationalities more or less (and preserved the greek one). When Greece became independent, it was basically just the Peloponnesus. The rest of its land it took by several, subsequent wars against the Ottomans, in an attempt of retaking Constantinople and "recreating" the "Byzantine" empire. The last official war was in the 1920's, at the end of which the two sides signed the treatt of Lausanne, basically setting the borders and separating the two countries. The Turkish side has disputed the validity of that treaty and reject the idea that greeks should hold islands that are near the shores of Turkey, something that has been creating tension between the two countries since then. This for example led to the invasion and illegal military occupation of half of Northern Cyprus by the Turkish in the 1970s, the military crisis at Imia, as well as daily violation of the borders by the Turkish air and naval forces, which all led in openly having their president in late 2022 threatening war against Greece.

greece and modern day north macedonia dont go back longer than 30-50 years. north macedonia only has this name because it is geographycally located in north macedonia and has nothing to do with the ancient macedonias that spoke greek. northen macedonia speak a slavic dialect, as proof serbs and bulgarians can understand them. turkey are mongolians that came from far east and conquered the former persians (modern day iran if i am not mistaken). then in 1453 they invaded the then byzantine empire (easter rooman empire that kept its hellenistic heritage). in 1821 greece revolted and started getting free. at some point we got along but in 1922 turks attacked the greeks in asia minor and slaughtered around 200.000 people. they also made the genocide of ponus and armenias that we were very close with. since then they have been trying to claim the agean (cyprus invasion in 1974 and imia invasion in 1996). nowadays they sent warplanes and ships inside our territory. its bassicaly a bs political thing that the 2 countries cant solve. should greece and turkey work together (maybe along with israel and egypt) they would control a big portion of the merchandise of the word. we generally get along with the turkish people but our goverments need a bombardent so they can all die and we could move on. also both countries are very patriotic

Actually Greece doesn't have a marine fleet. Ship owners of Greek descent use Greece as their base since they have Greek corrupted politicians in their pockets and they pay zero taxes.

Actually Greek - Turkish history is pretty messed up. Greece was conquered in the 1400s I think, there were mostly bad times during the Turkish regime but a few good ones here and there when the administration left people alone to do their thing. In 1821 the Greek revolution started, a Greek state was established and I think in the late 1800s to very early 1900s Greece was quite close to what it is today. Later after WW2 I think as a part of an agreement with the allied forces we were to keep the now Turkish shoreline in Asia minor, as it was traditionally Greek founded cities. However the dictatorship that was established at the time went too far, invaded deep into Turkish territory, thinking they were Alexander the great, or Attila or something, and well, when you get cocky the shit will hit the fan and you will get covered in said shit... At any rate, Greece feels wronged for all those years that it was part of the Othman empire and was mistreated, also for the massacres at the towns on the shoreline of asian minor after the Turks pushed back on the invasion. Turkey on the other hand holds a grudge for the invasion deep in their country, since they were essentially hunted while they retreated. However to this day absurd claims are made from Turkey's part. I don't really blame Turkish people, and I don't think they blame us. It's history at this point. However the Turkish government is not helping to lower the tensions, they are trying to stay in power by feeding into a ethnocentric movement, most Turkish people are actually suffering by a huge crisis right now and things seem to go from bad to worse for them. Quite sad to see actually, and worrying because you never know what people on the edge of the cliff might do. These conditions historically lead to cruel dictatorships, or military fascist states, and that is no bueno, not for us Greeks and not for the Turkish people. Imagine that Erdogan is quite moderate compared to others in Turkey. At any rate I hope I gave some context. If I made any mistakes and a history buff wants to chime in you are most welcome to do so, I am not perfect at history by any means.

@@ApaleutosMitsYou are very right that clown is doing Turkish propaganda with spreading lies. There was no dictatorship in Greece when we begun to take back and free our regions that the real Attila like barbarians took from us. It was actually the one that came after Venizelos that was a dictatorship and resulted in the destruction. If it wasn't for the Greek people's greed and corruption at that time we would have freed Minor Asia ages ago at that time from the barbarians that still occupy it to this day.

Don't spread your bullshit with lies for foreign people to read who are unaware of history and try to justify the Turks in what happened. I don't know your connection with Turkish people for you to spread propaganda but stop lying to save your friends.

Hellas as it is our real name (Roman named us Graeci) has a lot of rivalries with countries around it. *Turkey* What you know today as turkey is in fact Hellenic. All those lands were inhabited by Hellenes looooooong before turks came from Central Asia! If you go to ‘’turkey’’ you will see that it’s full of orthodox churches and Hellenic temples and historical sights. There is no turkey mate! All those lands are ours. The problems in the Aegean exists because turkey wants more than it deserves! They want half the Aegean. Those tiny islands called Imia, they belong to Hellas BUT turks went there one day and raised a turkic flag. The Hellenic naval forces went to take it down and the turks killed in cold blood two Hellene soldiers! That’s why there’s still controversy! Hellas were under turkic occupation for more than 400 years. All these years were like torture for us. We were kinda forced to hide our identity, not to speak Hellenic outside. They forced us to convert to Islam… they were stealing our foods and money… kidnapping Hellene children for the harems… Torture!

@@jorham1464 Turks migrated to anatolia half a millennium ago. The lands Turkey has right now were already got Turkificated more than 500 years ago. It's absurd that some Greeks think that they still have rights over these lands. It's like saying "these are mine" for 500 years. Since the fall of Ottoman Empire, Turkey has no wish over taking anything from Greece. Greeks are the ones who can't move on from Ottoman Empire times and being overly paronoid over every action Turkey makes. The politicians also take advantage of this fact. Meanwhile Turkish people are more concerned about being divided ideologically because of all the inside political issues that has been going on over 50 years now.
