Mexico's government severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador after police broke into the Mexican Embassy to arrest a former Ecuadorian vice president, an extraordinary use of force that shocked and mystified regional leaders and diplomats. Ecuadorian police late Friday broke through the external doors of the embassy in the capital, Quito, to arrest Jorge Glas, who had been residing there since December. Glas sought political asylum at the embassy after being indicted on corruption charges.

The US posted a 2 sentence reply on their government website last I heard, condemning Ecuador. Weak but something is better than nothing. Mexico is their largest trading partner you think there would be a strong reply. Word on the street is that US wants a military base in Ecuador so they want to play nice . Who knows. Canadian response was a joke though.

@@cw9282 The person already served their prison sentence and got out but the opposing political party wanted him to go back and get sentenced again for the crimes he already served time for. That is double jeopardy. It is against international law to force entry into a foreign embassy. It isn’t against international law to grant asylum to politicians no matter how controversial they are. Ecuador granted political asylum to a very controversial politician so Mexico did the same with one of theirs. It isn’t illegal. Ecuador is the one who has made a very serious illegal violation in this situation. Even if the political prosecution refugee has questionable past, the illegal move by Ecuador just made it a lot worse for themselves and doesn’t help their case at all

@@soupdrinker "Ecuador granted political asylum to a very controversial politician" --> who are you talking about? Julian Assange? He's not a politician. He's the founder of Wikileaks who disclosed atrocities committed by American soldiers in the Middle East. He was disclosing truth and was targeted by the Americans because they didn't like him disclosing that truth. In contrast, Jorge Glas has been convicted of stealing $13.5 million, bribery of court officials, misuse of public funds while in office. Now, they've found out that he misused public funds that was dedicated to rebuilding Manabí Province after a 2016 earthquake, so he ran into this embassy to hide. If you really want to compare Assange to Glas, then you really have some morality issues (in that you can't see right from wrong). Assange was trying to disclose atrocities. Glas was committing atrocities.

Israel bombed an Iranian Embassy building, violating international law, and the world has done nothing to hold them accountable. Nations could have expelled Israeli diplomats from their countries but no action was taken. Ecuador viewed that and thought nothing of also violating international law by breaking into a Mexican Embassy. Mexico was right in ending ties with Ecuador and other nations should follow suit, but they probably won't. When international law goes unpunished it is basically a green light for countries to act as they please. The world is descending into utter chaos.

Is the sovereignty of an embassy actually written down somewhere in international law? Was this an actual violation of international law or was it basically just "rude" like farting in an elevator or something? If it was an actual violation of international law then the president of Ecuador should be jailed for ordering the violation of international law. I could see Mexico having a good case for extradition and a trial in Mexican courts.

There are cases in which embassies are the only refuge left for people unjustly accused of crimes. Right after the coup d'etat in Chile, many persecuted people were given a place in the embassies and the nunciature (Vatican embassy) which directly saved their lives from unlawful execution and/or disappearance in exchange for exile. It happened that the dictatorship threw dead bodies inside their premises, so, no metaphors here. Yet, the dictator Pinochet never ever did something like this - the Mexican embassy also saved people. Four Ecuadorians were disappeared in the dictatorship. Ecuador should know better. Embassies are now what churches were in the Middle Ages, but asylum isn't given just to anyone who runs in: the Mexican ambassador must have found that the guy's situation was likely unjust. If Ecuador says their guy is an authentic criminal, there are all manner of diplomatic and legal proceedings to get him. What they did is the equivalent to a policeman shooting a suspect in cold blood. It's a crime, at the international level.

Entering into an embassy was the wrong approach, but we must keep in mind that Mexico had made it a habit to grant asylum to organized crime members that manage to make it into governments of South American countries. Just a year or two ago they tried to do it in Peru. They really should have just surrounded the embassy, broken diplomatic relations with Mexico, expelled the diplomats and arrest him either trying to escape or after the embassy property ceased to have that status. I hope this will start a discussion over Mexico's actions in South America. The takeover of South American governments by organized crime is a troubling trend, and Mexico acting as their escape path when stopped is even worse. Even so, I only consider Ecuador'snavtions semi-justified because they are in an existential crisis, with othanized crime assasinating politicians and officers of the law to gain further control.

What is wrong with you? Mexico has a history of protecting political refugees, it happened in Chile when murderer Pinochet tried to massacre left leaning people, and whether or not you agree with someone's political beliefs, they have a right for due process. That protection should be granted if the country is in crisis. Breaking this international law sets a dangerous precedent. There is no excuse, shame on you
@nospamallowed4890
@nospamallowed4890 3 ай бұрын
@ninaenamorada079 Mexico indeed has a proud history in the matter. That is what makes it so offensive to see it perverted by a president that chose to use that power to support members of criminal organizations hellbent to take over countries at the expense of their citizens. Peru barely avoided that fate when Castillo - after being exposed for his actions - attempted an auto-coup, failed and then was running towards the Mexican embassy and citizens had to use their private cars to block his path so that he could be caught and brought to justice. And still that sleazebag Lopez Obrador tried to help him after that. The problem is not Mexico and its history. The problem is the Forum of Sao Pablo cartel member that currently holds power in Mexico and might not allow free elections next time. As to Ecuador, I already stated that their raid of the embassy was wrong and that they should have followed international law to achieve the capture. Like surrounding the embassy, breaking relations with Mexico, expelling the diplomats and THEN.capturimg the criminal when it would no longer be a matter of violating sovran territory. The end result would have been the same, but without getting mud in their faces. Still, the real point is that no form of organized crime can be allowed to take over any more South American nations like Venezuela, like they tried to do in Peru and like they tried to do in Ecuador, as well as they are still trying (or already achieved) in other countries.
