6 жыл бұрынIn Tehuantepec, a town in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, Lukas Avendaño and fellow muxes live beyond the gender binary. A muxe is an individual assigned male at birth who behaves outside roles traditionally associated with masculinity. Sometimes referred to as a third gender, muxe identity pre-dates Spanish imperialism in the Zapotec region. For Lukas, dressing in feminine Zapotec clothing is a political act, giving everybody the power and the liberty to decide who they want to be.

Interesting huh, I think people in the comments section are missing the point, I know this subject is a little touchy to some people, but the person in the video even said that If they ask them what gender they are, it's the thing they think about the least. They're expressing themselves. And in terms of gender identity, it isn't binary, it isn't just set in stone they're taking characteristics and roles of what is considered to be feminine at a given period in time and they classify that as a 3rd gender.

This channel is called great big story for a reason! It’s because they share people’s stories without any bias of their own, they are just letting people speak their minds without altering the message, you can simply take away what you want from it. If you hate these people that’s cool I guess but why dislike and shit on a KZfaq channel that isn’t telling you to agree or disagree with its content? Isn’t that what we want?? Because last time I checked we wanted content that didn’t push a narrative.

The problem is that SJWs who espouse these kinds of "views" dont leave it at that. After they get you to accept the rational concept that everyone should be loved and accepted regardless of who they have romantic interest in, they start trying to change the perception of biology in order to fit their narrative. Its happened time and time again, just look at canada. The reason this is getting mass negativity isnt because we're bigots who hate all trans people, but because entertaining insanity is the first step towards enveloping it as a society. Be you, be happy. But youre not going to get the rest of society to conform to your opinions.

Ben C the trans people in the video aren't saying they're a third gender, they're saying they're mux which I'm pretty sure is equivalent to trans. It's the channel pushing the narrative through the title. The only reason this is getting tons of hate is because the channel's saying there's a third (which is scientifically and definitively wrong).

abrahamics feel the need to say that because it increases their faith-for-afterlife social credit score, which has minimum requirements for the "vacation" they get rewarded after brain death. only upper level members of their pyramid sch-...., ehmm "church", are able to decide their views on empirical evidence and the scientific method their upline moses tells them how to perform things like "gender", and big-jesus is supposedly always watching you for surveillance (they have what is called a "cult of personality" around that jesus) just keep in mind 90% of the comments screeching about their culture's rituals and practices (e.g. static cultural identity assignemt at birth bijecting to a primitive/reductionist understanding of sexual reproductive role) represents only a fraction of the population. most people just aren't trying to earn those faith points....

Nugget, what about intersex people? There are a number of humans born who present both external forms of genitalia. There are others who may discover late in life that they possess internal organs of the opposing gender (one fascinating case of a grandfather who had surgery and the doctors discovered a small uterus inside him - how crazy would that be!). Biology is rarely simple. This is a fascinating story for the culture and etymology it describes.

Many people don't like or are against this ideology and philosophy, which is fair, everyone can have and express their opinions; but just because you don't agree you can say hurtful, mean and disrespectable things about them. I am Mexican, and the muxes are part of the cultural heritage of my country, which I'm very proud of. I think that instead of looking to the bad things we could learn about the good things instead: they are able to express themselves unlike many of us.

The problem is not random people doing what they want to do with their own lives. The problem is them changing laws, society and forcing the rest of the world to bent to their own rules which we don't agree with. If a man wants to dress as a woman and sleep with other men, as long as it doesn't bother me, more power to them I guess. When they make a big fuss and start changing the education system, bathroom policies, and that teachers should be teaching 7 year old kids that being a drag queen is %100 normal, we have a problem...

Y'know, when people say "there's only two genders", what they really mean is there's only two *sexes*, and even that's incorrect since intersex people are a thing. And it's not just muxes either; India has Hijra and Native Americans have Two Spirits. These cultures have accepted the concept of a third gender for *hundreds of years*, yet it's taken us until just now to properly shine a light on them. Sex is biological and gender is cultural. It's really not that hard to grasp.

raiden0456 same here in Indonesia, even though there are waria (transgender men), and the five genders of Bugis. I guess it came from how unmaterial it is. Unlike sex, it doesn't have a physical form visible from birth. Most genders are only visible as traits and habits, which for people is something that could be 'changed' or 'corrected'.

One thing to take away from this video is that this is not a new or recent practice. Many many cultures didn't have a focus on gender identity until recently. It's not uncommon in history to have more than Male and female.

I feel like they shouldn't have titled it "Mexico's third gender". It would have done just fine with "Mexico's Muxe". 1:16 is my favorite part of this story. That the Zapotecs didn't have pronouns. That everyone was called muxe and that was it. Period.

I think people missed the point if they're disliking the video so much... I don't think it's saying that there is a third gender, biologically there is only two genders, that much is true, however... if you were to listen to the muxe speaking, the origin of this word is ancient, meaning they were part of culture where they were considered equal and perhaps it is an indicative of a certain influence on their to now separate people in all ways, as much as it with inequality with women in the middle east compared to the value given to them I'm other cultures, such as Egypt and Norway, it is with the muxes who by having an ancient precedent show that being transgender is human and was once respected, not necessarily applaused,as people seem to think

I looked up the definition for gender and it said that it's based more on social and cultural differences rather than biological ones, so by definition, they are validated to be a different gender. In this case case it's being treated as a third state.

Alex Ruiz thats the google definition and google doesn’t want to offend anyone so they put that in. The original definition from an Oxford dictionary states: “a term to describe if someone is male or female”. google is incredibly biased and pc.

I think that the title "Mexico’s Third Gender" is quite misleading, the muxes are only from the Tehuantepec region in the state of Oaxaca, not even all oaxacans know about them. The "tehuana" culture is so colorful -most Frida Khalo's dresses are from that region-, that even they want to embrace it. Their parents feel blessed for having a muxe son because they certainly will take care of them. If their community respect them, why don't you do the same?

LET PEOPLE BE WHO THEY WANT TO BE. edit: Yes, of course free speech, and i'm not pushing that down, i'm just saying my opinion. If it's that persons choice, people should let them be whoever they want to be. You don't have to like it, but it exists, and you should respect people no matter what orientation they chose. They're people just like us. It's just they chose to identify as something different as you, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I learned a lot from the comments (and the video)...here's how I see things: Words and their respective definitions are created by people. And people are not all-knowing, so these definitions aren't exactly clear cut. Every day, people expand their knowledge of the world and its components. Thus, there's always a need to update and revise definitions to fit newly acquired information. What might be considered correct today may not be considered fully correct tomorrow. For nothing is ever fixed in this world, except for change. Even if one is against an idea, one must be open to the possibility of it being correct (and vice versa) 😊

I love the video but I feel a bit strange about the title being about a third gender? The narrator specifies at the very beginning that to impose external constructs of gender onto muxiety, which exists far beyond and outside of such narratives, doesn’t do justice to the actual identity. The video could have been titled “muxiety in Mexico” or something more eye-catching if views are a concern...I just felt that the choice to place the word “third gender” as a title for this video may have come from a good place but does a disservice to the muxe people they spoke to and also just further imposes western/external views onto this group....I don’t know, just a thought.

i have absolutely no problem with people being gay or thinking they are a third or ninth gender, i just dont get why it gets so much emphasis in the media as if peoples sexual orientations or whatever are at the forefront of the worlds concerns. the lgbtq community make up a relatively small number of the global population but youd think 90% of this planet was gay with all the coverage it gets in the media. i mean we get it, its an attempt to normalize the abnormal. but it doesnt really change anything but make our species seem pre-occupied with our sexual orientations and pronouns or whatever. if it doesnt stop im gonna have to unsubscribe and quit watching channels like this.

I really think we're going in the wrong direction with this. I think most people who say there are more than two genders really want there to be NO genders, because gender means noting. The part about the Zapotec people not having gendered pronouns is really demonstrating that point well. Male and female and all the things in between are noting more than arbitrary labels that are unimportant. People should just be people. Plus, think about how elegant and simple it would be if there was only one pronoun, not 3+. Btw, I'm a gay trans guy who wears women's clothing, so don't come at me about not understanding non-binary peoples struggles.
