I think the food in Mexico might be cheaper, but people would be mistaken that Japan is expensive to eat in. It would depend on what and where you eat. I would ask Taku if he missed japanese food in Japan over what the same food would be in the US.

$30 a day for food is about $900 a month. That's not really a cheap cost however, that is going out for food vs. eat at homebase. Plus, you have to include the time to get there, the gas and wait time plus the drive home. In the USA...that would probably be on the high side for two people to afford especially in California and New York.

I think Japan is cheaper with the quality you receive. If I'm in Mexico, I only eat vegetarian because meat is expensive and low quality. Japan I'll be a carnivore because meat and seafood is super affordable and super high quality. Good meals in Mexico are super expensive, comparable to US prices unless you're eating street food everyday. The best thing I had in Mexico was street taco's under an overpass for $1.20 each, best food I had. out of the 10 restaurants I've been to in Mexico, only one I liked, rest are super expensive and super pretentious. If they use the word "artisan" anywhere, stay away, it means high mark-ups. Microbrew beer costs the same as in the states ($8-10). Literally had a restaurant say "artisan spring water" at our table and we asked the waiter, what makes it artisan and he couldn't answer. Did the artisan make the glass bottle? because no way he made the spring water. Vegetarian dishes are the best in Mexico, the cheeses, the produce the salsas, nothing beats that.

Taku, is eating weird body parts and ramen. Jocelyn, is eating the best/freshest food in Mexico. You either go budget, or splurge. Also, airplane rides to Asia are much longer and much more expensive. I'll take a Cancun all inclusive, any day of the week. All inclusive for 10 days, averages $3K. That includes airfare, an adults only resort that's right on the beach. Unlimited food/alcohol, transportation, 24 hour room service, and a personal butler. Japan, can't touch that price.
