What I learned when building, tuning and installing the MFJ-1796 40M - 2M vertical dipole. I'll do my best to answer any questions you post in the comment section.
FYI: I live in a duplex condo with an HOA, but have some freedom to put up antennas within reason. Let me know your own experience with limited space and what you found that gives you freedom to talk around the world. 73.

Thanks for this very informative video info. I am today 5/10/2022 trying to put this antenna together and I really could use some help.

It was my own frustration in putting it together that drove me to create something, even if it is not very professional. Please let me know how well the antenna works for you.

Thanks Dan for the great video, I am looking to buy this antenna or maybe the cobweb, still trying to figure which is the better antenna... But how long is the longest aerial from tip to tip sir? ty for the video, 73s NS9T

If you are talking about the "spikes", they are about 30" or less. The antenna itself is about 11 feet.

I am putting together its big brother the 1799 that I got from an estate. But I don't want to deal with the 80m section. I can't seem to be able to tune the 40m band while temporarily vertical 5 feet off the ground. I do have an analyzer. Any ideas to try?

I used my NonoVNA. If you don't have one, the cost about $50 or so from Amazon and they all seem to work the same. Easy to learn thanks to KZfaq. Just concentrate on the sweep function and use the 40 meter band frequencies. Set it a bit wider to find where it is currently tuned (lowest SWR). This will turn out to be one of the best tools you can have. Good luck.

How did you get the bottom fiberglass rod to stop spinning freely in the grey conduit piece?

I had to ask MFJ when I was putting it together. All you need to do is tighten the hose clamps fairly tight. I hope you great success... Dan (N7DKE) and 73...

Does it just have one feed line or 2? Like one for the HF and another for VHF. I can't tell from the documentation online for it.

Hi again I am putting this antenna together and the instructions mentioned a Bare wire. Figure 7 "Bend bare wire 1" from any element if necessary" Do you have any INFO on this bare wire that you could shear with me? I am hoping!

Gene, This is one of the things I mentions in the video: the age of the manual. 4 Minutes and 57 seconds into the video I show that he newer version now uses a metal band shaped to go over each coil. In other words, just ignore the statement on page 8 on the bottom.

No, in fact, that may be counter productive. I suggest you call MFJ Tech support for advice. Mine is way up on the roof.

This looks like a cool antenna, but a LOT of work to put together and tune. 🙁

The center plastic connecting piece that came with my MFJ-1796 does NOT have holes drilled so that there is the shown 1-2 inches separation between radiator elements. The radiator spokes do NOT have curled ends. The screws that hold the radiator spokes are too short for the purpose, even with the lock nuts provided. The instructions show 6-6-4-4 or twenty spokes per radiator, NOT "4 per band" that N7DKE claims "work". The installed version shown in this video has various supporting ground wires or other cabling used that are not in the instruction booklet and not explained. The assembly and instruction booklet MFJ sends is practically worthless, diagrams wrong, photo illegible, steps a riddle for an assembler to solve. I must have 20-30 plus hours trying to assemble this thing along with its MFJ Folding Baseplate, and it does NOT work, can't even pick up a signal on any band. 40 meters tunes in and out on my Kenwood, don't know if there's a short somewhere or what the problem is. And evidently this antenna has been in production for quite some time, judging from all the harsh reviews on You Tube and E Ham and elsewhere. The advertising made this sound like a solution to my HOA limiting QTH, and was excited to get to buy the last one in inventory at MFJ when other suppliers reported no stock. Instead, I'm discouraged as all get out, face convincing MFJ they sent me some defective parts, will be having to take this thing up and down to tune like it was a pogo stick, and it cost with shipping north of $400.00 plus another $130 or so for the folding baseplate. It's not the end of the world in terms of a financial mistake, but guess proves that people like me have continued to buy this antenna in the face of lots of negative reviews, hoping against hope that surely, something as simple as an antenna can't really be this difficult to get working.[I've put up my share of dipoles and beams over the years]. Guess what...it is looking like it is just that difficult, and in my case absent MFJ coming through with some parts without defects, impossible.
