I figured if you drafted this up in a design build doc we fellow ham people would gladly chip in for a download and you'd be off buying that beam............. This is the neatest and most functional tower ive seen in years. Here in Australia our leading tower maker has closed and options are thin when your hoping to use free standing. I must admit when you winched that whole tower single handed it was a suprise. Brilliant work.

Hello Mark and thanks for taking the time to comment, The design is pretty simple and I think I cover everything in the video but maybe I should take the time to put it into a doc of some sort. I have had the MA5b antenna on the mast for a long time now and even in strong winds never had a problem, I am not sure how it would stand up being taller or with a bigger beam I think that would need some testing but for me here it does a great job. cheers Nigel

Hi Mark sorry your having problems I do hope you get sorted soon. I used about 1 and 1/2 ton of ballast mix and about 5 or 6 bags of cement I think mixed at 3 to 1 I also drove 2 9 foot long earth spikes in the ground diagonal from the mast this was earthed to the 500mm anchor bolts for the tower. Hope this helps. cheers Nigel

HI Mark I am not sure if the bags were 20 or 25kg I got them from B&Q standard blue circle bags but after a night thinking I am now sure I did 4 to 1 mix. The hole I dug in my garden was about 3 1/2 foot square I was planning more but I hit a chalk and flint layer so called it a day :) cheers for now Nigel.

This is exactly what I need. Most of the commercially available masts are far too long in the down position. I only have a tiny back garden and I need it to extend to about 35 or 40ft. Mind you £500 seems a lot of money for all that's in it but I have most of the stuff already. I just need 3 or 4 sections of box and with the local prices here I'm sure it'll be a few hundred.

Hi Nigel :) Fantastic Video . A few questions. what size box did you use where did you get the bushes and bits . I might have a go making one if you don't mind. I can only get 10 mm plate steel 2foot square I can brace the box all the way down and have a box sleeve into the concrete about 3 foot so its just a bit more security as the plate steel im using is only 10mm thick. can get 100 mm box and 90 and 80 & 70 in 7m lengths. so 2 of them will give me about 12 meters if I need help is it ok if I ask Richard.

Dear Nigel, Beautiful work. Well engineered. Can you share how you attached the cable to raise both masts? Randall, KE8DQV
@fixitnige
@fixitnige 8 жыл бұрын
+Randall Reihing Hi Randall If you mean at the bottom of each post section I made a small steel plate with a grove in it just a bit smaller than the cable size. Then I drilled and taped 2 holes in the post and clamped the cable to the bottom of the tower section the cable then comes u and out the top of the section through a pulley and attaches to the next section down with a ring bolt. When the lower section goes up it pulls the next section up just like a fire man's ladder. Hope this helps.

@fixitnige
@fixitnige 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Gervais the cable from the winch goes over the top of the first section down inside and attaches to the bottum on the secound section. next a cable fixed to the top of the first section goes over the top of the secound section and down inside and attaches to the bottum of the top section. When you start winding the winch you are only pulling the secound section but because of the wire rope on the next section it pulls up the top section just like a 3 section ladder. Hope that explains it :)

Mine consist of 2 supporting 2.5"x2/5" square tube with 1/4" thick wall by 12 feet with the main 24' mast tilting in between. This 24 foot section is the main main mast and it is also 2.5x.25 with 1/4 in thickness. Im using a 3500LBS wench and im wonder if the MAIN mast will be tooooo heavy.
