Too many garages roll their eyes and tut when you turn up with an MGF/TF, ( I know from experience) do a bad job and blame the manufacturer when the fault returns, or even worse, cause another fault. Well done to you for finding and remedying the fault.

Excellent diagnostic procedure. When dismantling I record where each bolt went and store them by punching holes in an upturned cardboard box. Different length bolts and my lack of day to day experience has taught me that! I need to get out more.......

Getting the fault codes, looking at a wiring diagram and knowing that the two connectors are the wrong way round, good diag mate 👍

Yes Matt, i thinks there is a sense of reluctance to connect the 12 volts into something that has not had 12 volts in there when i got it. That's why i got as much info as i could to prove it. cheers dave

Absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much for taking the time to take us through this, your workflow for fault finding, and sharing your experience and expertise with us. I have an MG ZT-T in Portugal that I'm slowly starting to learn how to maintain and repair myself, but the electrics terrify me lol. Thanks again.

good job as uasual dave, this kind of problem would be difficult to figure out for most techs ., kettele series engine as know in our place , was good advanced desgin although did have head gasket problems . one of the best rover group cars was the 213 with bullet proof honda engine , just that car then rotted away fast 😆🤦‍♀️

Great comment. It's evident there has been 3 separate people at this car. Whoever did the head, whoever did the service and the guy with the computer. None of them figured it out.

You see this more often than you think you should as people rush to strip cars down before recording where things went.and then wonder why they have problems. Mark things with a pen and or take photos. Everyone has a camera phone these days so no excuse really. Good job Dave straight for the jugular on this one.

@@davesterl seen it 2 times in last 3 years. A vauxhall astra. They had forced the connection on the the cam sensors which apart from being wrong didn't make a connection and was then damaged and a old bmw where they had plugged the knock sensor on to the block and taped the corresponding connection back onto the loom. Also didn't diagnose dan have a bmw that had the inlet cam and exhaust cam switched over I do believe?

Top job Dave, obviously the previous "technician " must have been half asleep when they did the previous repairs , pity they were not idiot proof connectors, I remember a sales guy opening the roof on one of these, he didn't fold the plastic rear screen in when opening the roof , crack 🤣🤣, local tent repair shop , new panel 100 quid job 😂😂, nice explained repair and testing there 👍👍

I completely understand and sympathise as to how this can happen. Someone (maybe the previous owner/DIYer, I don't know) has embarked on a reasonably big job, maybe reading out of a book or from youtube. Put a lot of time and effort to the best of their ability. Doesn't run correctly afterwards and can't figure it out, spent too much money on it and give up and send it. A fresh pair of eyes, who has not went through the ordeal of the big repair, see the problem quickly. Yes i have experience, knowledge and information at my fingertips which the previous person may not have. This was a small mistake right at the finish line and couldn't see the woods for the trees. Anyone thinks they have never done similar has not done anything

Previous mechanic stuffed up, can happen to anyone. Great pickup. All connectors that can be interchanged should be colour coded. Working on a A300 CF6 engine we found that it was possible to interchange pylon connectors and as a result the harness/ connectors had to be modified. Poor design happens at all levels.

yes, easy mistake to make but if it doesn't run properly once you've done a job you would hope they would have retraced their steps and put it right rather than just let it go, too many people in the trade with enough knowledge to break it but not enough to fix it!
