Thanks , Bjorn for answering my question related to coldgate. I am just wondering why Hyundai, Kia, MG and others do so little to mitigate coldgate, if a proper use of the 2 kW battery heater would help. Maybe they prefer to limit the long range use of EVs just not to jeopardize their own petrol and hybrid sales...

It's all to do with cell temperature as you suggest. Lower temperatures increase the internal resistance so you need a higher voltage to push the same amps. You can see this at 3:20 where in Thailand you are getting 105A @ 429V at 65% and at 3:04 in Norway at the same 65% SOC you are getting only 91A @ 430V - in Norway the Internal Resistance of the cells is higher due to lower cell temperatures. Nice video - just a pity that you don't have the equivalent of ScanMyTesla for the MG to show the cell temperatures :)
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the car loses the heat too fast probably due to lack of battery insulation.
@stevecongrave1684
@stevecongrave1684 4 жыл бұрын
The batteries on the MG are 'modules' whereas the Tesla wraps each cell in a thermo conductor channel and foam so that it can exactly control the temperature. MG has battery cooling but not heating. However even the Tesla Model 3 doesn't have enough heating for EU weather conditions. It raises the cell temp by 1C every 6 minutes when pre-heating for SuC which isn't enough. S/X are better with dedicated battery heaters.
@kanaljenskanal
@kanaljenskanal 4 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland For us in scandinavia, with moderate summer temperatures, it might be ok to add some insulation to the large bottom area if the normal cooling system of the battery can keep battery cell temperature under control and not "hot-gate". But it could be that the OEMs also have counted on passive thermal loss through that large bottom area for it all to work perfectly. But then that would in most cases only be needed in really hot summer countries. Sometimes you can add a "winterpackage" when you order a new car. Maybe thats something that will come in the future also for electric cars?
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevecongrave1684 That's incorrect. MG has battery heater. And Model 3 "afterburners" can run at 7 kW which is higher than Model X/S with "only" 6 kW. When preheating stationary with 7 kW afterburners, I have recorded that it went from 4°C to 27°C in just 31 minutes. That's +1°C each 1 min 20 s.
@stevecongrave1684
@stevecongrave1684 4 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland Where did you hear that MG has a battery heater? You can see the manufacture of the MG batteries in this video and there is no heater - only cooling. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odSdpNRzmJvdcYU.html The Model 3 'afterburners' are the stators that are run purposely out of phase to generate heat - they are not generating 7kW of "heat". Do you have a video showing the temperature rise as I have only seen 1C/6 minutes so far. That is from a starting temperature of 20C.

Question for Bjorn: As you said, Coldgate is a common issue with most EVs except Tesla and Audi. Is the battery heater in these coldgating cars strong enough to prevent coldgating by a software update, or is this a flaw of the hardware design ?

Norway is probably one of the worse place for evs. It has low speed roads with very low temperatures. The temperature management is always on a challenge in that cold place. Here in Spain we have 3-4 weeks of strong winter and I think all ev would work very different. Good stuff Bjørn.

Zeee Germans won't ever compare das auto to Tesla :D They think Audis technik is far far better . But seriously I charge next to eTron 55 in the UK quite often and apart from the price it is way better in every aspect than my KIA. Only consumption is a bit too high in comparison but knowing the massive weight I can forgive that. If I could only afford one :D I got a choice either getting 1/3 bigger house to accommodate my 3 kids but be cramped in Kia when driving or buy eTron and be cramped in our house :P Choice seems obvious. I spent 10 times more time at home so eTron sorry nich gut!

@@Haveagoodd You likely made the right decision for your finances. Speaking as a former home flipper, some improvements make a profit on resale, while most cars go DOWN with time. I buy cars a few years old to get them for half price and will get a Model 3 or Y when a used one is ~$25K.

Why did the Thai charging session add 40kWh while the Norwegian added considerably less energy? I do recognise that some of the energy disappears because of the cold - but why 3-4 kWh? Did they not start from the same SoC?

I think the problem is the charging standard, Chinese charging requires higher voltage, mostly max 750V, but Euro charging standard or DC fast chargers have more current(A). According to GB/T standard most Chinese EVs should have the same standard-Max 750V, 125A. Please check the hand book of the MG EZS EV for charging capacity.

It is hard to believe that all "traditional" auto manufacturers seem to be getting it so wrong, what with them having a prime example of what to do (and not to do) from a certain automaker since 2012... But there is still one big mystery: OK, the MG ZS EV is made in China, but what of all other Chinese EVs, in China and elsewhere? Do you have any plans to spend, say, three months in China and test them the way you do in Norway? I am sure that you could raise funds for that...
