Looking for Springer Spaniel Training Tips? This is my third video featuring Pip the Springer Spaniel, and covers some top training tips. This includes building a pack mentality, and the three building blocks of spaniel training: Consistency, Control and Companionship. I also answer some questions viewers have asked about Pip, including the best dog food for Springer Spaniels, how much exercise Pip gets, how long you can leave a Spaniel for in the home, and more. It's a long video, and slightly flickery in a lot of places as it was filmed during the lockdown (back light and equipment!).
As ever, if you have any more questions about Springers, or about Pip, please let me know in the comments below.
Video timings:
2m 31s - Pack Mentality explanation
7m 28s - Building Blocks for Springer Spaniel training (Control, Consistency, Companionship)
12m 09s - Q&A

I miss my best friend Ranger (Rangie). He passed 15 and a half years ago but I still look at his framed pictures every day and smile. I know if there is a heaven he is running around chasing squirrels all day and sleeping next to a warm fire every night. I miss you!

I absolutely adore Springers🤪 My springer Paddy passed away in March aged 13 years. He was one of a long line of Springers that I loved. I am now too old to begin again with these wonderful dogs and I am grieving the loss of that part of my life where I had the most joyful and loving experiences of my life. So please enjoy your time with them It passes very quickly. 🥰🧤

Sorry to hear, I have a L/W 14 Y/O her name is Callaway. I also have a maltipoo named Kobe. The wife doesn't want another dog or at least a Springer.. my last two springers had acl issues. I've had Springer Spaniels since 87, showed most of them. I want a new Springer, I'm sorry for your loss.

Hello Marg. We have a 6 months old Springer and have just had to have a conversation with our 17 year old daughter to say we may have to let him go. It was a heartbreaking conversation but our feeling is that although he is a lovely well-socialised broadly obedient dog, which she looks after responsibly, because of his breed we will never be able to leave him alone for long enough in the house to be able to do what we have to do as a working family. As an experienced Springer owner, I wonder if and at what age your Springers could be left alone and for how long? Many thanks, Simon

My Springer Millie turned 10 the other week. She is my soul mate. No spots o her nose and she looks after me very well, she is a super star doing all sorts of things to help out including putting her muddy towels in the washer, closing the door when she comes in, passing her dish when she's finished eating, putting rubbish in the bin and recycling in the boxes on command. Springers are loyal, loving and fun to be with and so good natured x

@@mrheyes Yes when k had an operation a few years ago j told her Mummy would have to go because she had a poorly tummy so she was going to get it better. Friends looked after her for a few days and kept her on a lead when I returned. I told her that she would have to go steady because mummy had a poorly tummy and even though she was her usual whirlwind self excited to see me, as soon as friends had gone, she approached me so slowly then licked my hand so slowly too like I had never seen her do before or since. I had stitches so had been concerned in case she pounced on me however, I had nothing to worry about, in fact she slept on my bed that very night. I know they shouldn't but it's her house, she can when she wants, I just pay the bills x

My dad bred springers 50 years ago and letting them know who was leader of the pack was something he instilled in us as small children. He showed us how to give and remove food and show the puppies we were in charge and always got visiting children to give a treat after getting the dog to sit. His knowledge of the spaniel mindset has helped my sibling and I rear ‘good’ dogs over the years! (Don’t tell the working cocker under my bedcovers though🤗)

Great to hear this. My Springer came to live with us when he was 4 years old. I've had dogs all my life (mostly lab's) so I have some idea what I'm doing with dog training but Ollie (my Springer) was a total PITA. He was aggressive, he was disobedient, he was nervous and he was confrontational. I quickly realised that he's see what WE were doing (where we were sitting, which rooms we were in, what we were eating etc) and he'd challenge us for those things. I'd sit on the sofa, for example, and then get up and Ollie would sit in my spot and then snarl and bark when I tried to sit back down again. I thought I'd try to get some advice about how the deal with this so I contacted a local dog-training business and explained the issue. I said that it seemed like Ollie was unsure of his place in our "pack" and he was challenging us to try and figure out his place in our "heirarchy". The dog trainer told me that "pack mentality" was an outdated idea which had been proven wrong and that dogs have been domesticated for so long that they don't retain any kind of pack mentality. They went on to point out that "spaniel rage" is a thing and that an aggressive spaniel is probably mentally unstable and that I might consider replacing the dog. I thanked the person for their time, put the phone down and decided I'd sort it out myself since the trainer was obviously clueless. In the end, it took Ollie a few months to figure out his place in our "pack". The most effective way I found to train him was simply to blank him when he was acting unacceptably. It only took him a couple of weeks to figure out that being aggressive didn't get him what he wanted and then he became willing to be trained. 10 years later and he's the most incredible dog I've ever known. His obedience and understanding is almost telepathic. He's smart enough to know everything that's going on around him, and I know exactly what HE'S thinking so usually the only "command" I need to give him is a look and a nod or a shake of the head. Really glad I didn't listen to the trainer who told me pack mentality doesn't exist and that an aggressive spaniel is mentally ill and should be discarded. +EDIT+ Oh, and Ollie has a LOT of spots on his face (his entire face is dappled) and he was super-naughty... until we convinced him not to be, at least. :-D
@mrheyes
@mrheyes Жыл бұрын
Amazing - glad Ollie turned out to be a super Spaniel! I've had a few people comment that the 'pack mentality' is outdated....but everyone is free to their opinions. I know it's not outdated whatsoever based on my own experiences, similar to yourself. Noted on the spots on the face! This is definitely a truthful trend! :)

Hi Simon, this is a very thorough and honest assessment of owning a Springer. Our Buddy is 9 and a half and he is my world. He gives me no crap unlike the kids and wife 🤦‍♂️ But I am the alpha and he knows it. Since lockdown I took a punt on walking him without a lead on placements with side roads as there was less traffic about. It didn’t take long for him to work it out. He got freedom and no lead but I make him wait / sit at junctions even though there sometimes is no cars about. I can take him on main roads now and exactly the same. I’m no dog trainer nor expert but cos they’re so clever they can do all sorts of clever things like this. I meet a guy occasionally with a border colly who gets walked without a lead and he gave me the confidence to try it. I’ve lived every minute of being a Springer owner. We go for an hour walk every morning and most nights in the week and on weekends we do at least 5 miles a day. He only sleeps for about half an hour and then he brings me his toys to play with which lets me know he’s full of beans again. I can only endorse that the owner has to be the alpha. That has made Buddy who is our only dog we’ve owned become a remarkably well behaved and much loved family pet. I have considered getting another one but I think Buddy is too old and settled to be wreaking havoc with him. If you’re in control of your Springer then you’ve mastered the art of owning a well natured and reliable hound

Good video. We sadly lost our beloved chocolate Labrador recently, had her 11 and half years. We're both in our 50s and will be getting another dog in a few months, not immediately, but have for some time considered getting a smaller breed and spaniels seem to fit what we're looking for in a dog. Or tick a lot of similar boxes to labs, as we still want activity and playing, just something smaller. Undecided currently between Springers, Cockers and Sprockers but your videos are helpful

Wonderful video. I lost my beloved Parson Russell Terrier almost 2 years ago, it's taken me this long to start a new search. Think I'm looking at new breeds so I don't compare another dog to her. I seem to be looking at both the Brittany and The Welsh Springer Spaniel, and trying to determine if either would work in my Ohio suburban environment. If anyone sees this please let me know your thoughts!

owners would benefit to consult their veterinarian for nutritional advice. looking for an AFFCO certified canine food formulated for growth but not large breed puppy food that the dog does well on, (no loose stools), fed three times a day for the first six months and has the correct balance of fat and proper percentage of protein are important points. I like that you have Pip sit first and give paw as this further establishes your control and pack position and may prevent food aggression. thank you for the video!

I absolutely adore the breed, although I do prefer working vs show. Mine are always called “mud muppets” and can’t resist mud or water. Springers are incredibly sensitive dogs, and very loyal and loving. You DO need to be sure your dog needs to know they’re NOT people, and that’s true of any breed. I’m a “balanced” trainer myself, and use positive reinforcement training techniques, utilizing treats, praise and toys. The one thing I absolutely NEVER do is strike or yell at my dogs, especially springers. They’re SO sensitive and harsh, corrective measures are absolutely NOT recommended. (All I ever need is “No” in a firm tone with ALL my dogs). A solid recall is a MUST, along with basic obedience. This is a very “people pleasing” breed, and they’re truly just brilliant. They ARE very much a “shadow” dog, and quickly become quite unhappy when separated from their humans for long stretches and in my experience crate training is a MUST, as they should be crated or kennelled when left alone at home. The spot legend is utter nonsense lol.

We are planning to get a Springer pup soon, have done loads of research but am definitely influenced by Pip and the wonderful videos! Can you tell me, is her coat naturally short or is it trimmed?
@mrheyes
@mrheyes 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue, it's naturally short. I've never trimmed her soft coat (which is nice!). Funnily enough, her mums coat grows quite wild, as do some of her Springer brothers and sisters, so I guess it really depends on the individual dog, and - in part - the food they eat. Hope that helps!

@@jennybowser8379 Hi Jenny, there are many reputable breeders up and down the UK. I'd check for ones locally to you, and ensure you get one from a working line. Prices vary (and are inflated due to coronavirus), but expect to pay anything from £400 - £1000, depending where you buy one from.

I use to have an English Springer Spaniel that I named Flint because he had a lot of spots on his nose that made me think of gunpowder spray back from a flintlock gun and Flint was an amazing dog not naughty in the slightest he was very tolerant of playful teasing too you could do almost anything and he would lay there and take it

My Springer sees me as the pack leader, i treat my 11 year old friend v well, she sleeps on the floor of my bedroom but i will allow the occasional nap on the couch, the only issue still is the window cleaner, but to be fair i do sympathise with her wanting them to go away at 7am Saturday morning, thanks for the tips for her grandchildren haha

@Simon Heyes great question. He’s always had a tendency to bark when we’re out at some point - It’s seems particularly bad at the moment but we’ve just moved house so that may be why?!

I thought the alpha dog research had been discounted now as it was done on wolves that had been brought together from different pack artificially. Research now seems to suggest that things are less rigid as most wolf packs in nature are just family groups with the 'alphas' being the parents. Also it seems to now be discounted that dogs see humans as part of their 'dog pack' as they are well aware that we are different. They do however need to see us as resource provider which gives us our 'status' and rule givers. A lot of current research seems to suggest that a lot of training success is related to the quality of the relationship built with the dog and the clarity of training instruction.

Hi Simon, thank you so much for your invaluable tips. I’ve a 11 month old rescue springer. She’s a wonderful temperament and def knows that she’s “bottom dog”. She’s amazing with my 2 year old who she is very submissive to luckily for us! We’ve been super, super strict with her since we rescued her at 6 months. She recently started barking at walkers going by our window but doesn’t bark at people when we’re outside. She only started this after she was neutered at 10 months old. I scold her every time she does it and she stops. I don’t know why she has started this because we haven’t let up on the strict training routine. She also pulls the arm off us on her leash despite repeated training. I’m pregnant now so I wonder is she taking advantage because I’m not as strong as I used to be with pulling her back. We purchased a lead that goes around her nose/no pull lead it helped ever so slightly…..but it’s not enough. I will try your slip lead next and have purchased a clicker. She’s no aggression in her, she adores children, people and other dogs and is very submissive. We know the training has worked but we just need to fine tune things! Tips welcome!

Springers are ‘pulling dogs’🤪. Just keep going. Springers are a spirited kind of dog never happier than when they are out in the fields or splashing in puddles. As hunting dogs they need that kind of stimulation. The barking at people out the window could be related to protecting her patch and warning them away. They are good watch dogs as far as that is concerned. I wouldn’t be too strict with her she needs to develop at her own pace and she specially as she is as a rescue you don’t know what she experienced with her other owners. I wish you all the best with your springer. I am now 79 years old and not able to work with these boisterous wonderful dogs but Oh how I wish I could. Love to you all🧤

@mrheyes
@mrheyes 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tralee, training her out of biting is very important, for both of you! Making sure she understands biting you in general is wrong (ignore her, change voice tone, walk away) and she should get the idea. If she keeps chasing you and doing it, put her is some sort of cage for 10 mins each time, and she'll soon learn. Distracting her with chewable toys will also help...she's only young, so will be teething, which means her teeth will be sore, so she's just trying to sooth them. Good luck!

Hey :) Did things get better? I got a Springer Spaniel puppy when she was just 8 weeks old. She was so nice and calm the first week. Sleeping by my feet, eager to learn and loved going for short walks. She's now 2 months and 3 weeks old and won't stop biting me. It gradually got worse and worse. If I walk by her she'll jump and bite my legs, feet, ankles. It hurts so much. If I yell at her to stop, or even with positive reinforcement, she won't stop. She'll bite me really badly during walks and I usually come back inside crying while she's chewing my ankle or hands. I can't bond with her or teach her things anymore because she gets so aggressive out of nowhere 😔

I guess I was lucky to have a girl who naturally sees herself as lower in the lower level of pack. That’s good because we broke most of those guidelines. She sleeps in our bed (despite me trying to avoid that) and gets greetings at door. She has never been aggressive to my very little ones and doesn’t bark at passers by, only whines and calls to them to ask them to play.
