Part 3 of my MGB Maintenance videos, this time going through the 6000 mile or 6 month service. This is the interval advised by the 'official' drivers handbook but may not make sense to you based on how much you use your car, also, as cars get older there might be other things/other methods for addressing these services but this is as per the drivers handbook, feedback welcome!!
Items covered:
0:05:04 - Gearbox oil level check
0:06:46 - Differential oil level check
0:11:02 - Engine oil and filter change
0:19:16 - Lubrication miscellaneous
0:21:10 - Greasing front suspension and driveshaft (spoiler my grease gun breaks and i can't complete this!)
0:22:58 - Things I should have done but didn't for whatever reason, hope to cover in future episodes!

Very instructive once again! Well done. Just a tip re the oil change it's a good idea to replace the copper washer on the drain plug with a new one as the old one can become a little squashed re tightening up the sump plug in past (if its not been replaced), allowing minor oil leaks from the sump plug. Secondly I use disposable gloves for oil changes etc as there is debate about carcinogenic properties of used engine oil.

Enjoying this series of videos, good camerawork too. Just a tip on lubricating locks, oil works but graphite is very much better - oil tends to attract dirt where as a dry graphite does not. There are going to be lots of well maintained MG's after the current situation is over!

Oh right! Never used that before, will have to try it out, cheers for the comment, I think you’re right about the maintenance we’ve all been doing, I’ve seen some very highly polished classics on the road in the last couple of weeks 😂👍

Haha! Thanks, I’m no mechanic that’s for sure but most jobs seem fairly straight forward on the ‘B, I might go one further with a suspension rebuild this winter but only if I’m feeling brave!

The first service is the hardest! My grease gun got stuck on the nipple and I had to unscrew the nozzle and leave it stuck to the car. Eventually it fell off...

These are great, thank you for doing them! Do you have a suggested brand or link to a recommended grease gun + lithium grease?

Since you have electronic ignition once you set the timing you don't have to set it again. If you have a B with points as they wear the timing changes. I have found swapping out those grease fitting every once and a while has it's advantages because they get clogged, plus they're inexpensive. When you change the gearbox oil get a funnel with a hose so you can stand outside the car while you top it up, because it goes in slow. Like the video's I even been tempted to buy an XK8.

Thanks for the advice! Very useful! Yes I think I’m ok on the ignition front but didn’t have anything to film ☹️ I’ve ordered some more of those grease fittings so should be up and running again soon! Also, I have one of those large oil syringes with a hose so hopefully makes the gearbox refill a bit easier🤷🏻‍♂️ Glad I’ve tempted you into XK8 ownership 🤣 I love mine!

A topic for you to discuss on your KZfaq channel would be the new E10 petrol/fuel and how it affects the MGB.

I've watched all three parts. You had the wheels off but never lubed the splines. Isn't that in the handbook?

Aha! Good point! My handbook is a seventies one so it has different paragraphs for bolt on vs. wire so I must have missed it, I’ve not finished the series yet so I’ll mention in a subsequent video 👍 thanks!!

How do you know if there's already sufficient grease in the suspension as it's not like the oil level in the rear diff where you can see/feel if it needs topping up? Cheers

I don’t think there is a ‘level’ as such just needs greasing regularly, you’ll know if there is plenty as it starts coming out of the joints!!

The grease gun I got was just a draper one, called something like ‘draper heavy duty pistol action grease gun’ from Amazon. I replaced the standard pipe with an optional flexible one sold separately which makes it easier to reach trickier grease points, I also purchased a better ‘coupler’ called a ‘g.coupler’ or something which makes it 10x easier to get on/off a grease nipple without damaging anything 👍
