In this episode of our ongoing retrospective on 2001's METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY, we discuss the other side of American culture thus far we've ignored: the 'lunatic fringe'.
As much as MGS2 can function as an eerie premonition of the modern age, the game remains deeply rooted in the ongoing sociopolitical problems that defined the 1990s. Just how did the last decade of the American Century prefigure the same problems we're facing today, and how have these same issues dogged the American experiment, from one election to another, going all the way back to the original Sons of Liberty? Watch to find out!
************************
"The long awaited sequel to the PlayStation game Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released on November 13th, 2001. MGS2 does not star the former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake. Instead, Hideo Kojima took players into the mind of super soldier Raiden, a stealth operative on his first live combat scenario. His objective is to stop a group of terrorists, calling themselves the Sons of Liberty. This includes blowing up a large oil cleanup facility and killing the President of the United States.
MGS2's innovations included its introduction of the laser sight mechanic for more accurate aiming, and a refined cover system that allowed both players and enemies to shoot from cover. It also introduced collective enemy AI routines that relied on squad tactics rather than working individually, while individual enemies expressed fear and even birds had their own AI routines. MGS2 was considered to have the best enemy AI in gaming for many years. The physics was also a major step forward for gaming, particularly the sophisticated particle effects for its time (including for individual drops of rain) and the way objects moved.
The game earned both critical and commercial acclaim upon release, with the highest sales and review scores in the series. However, the game's convoluted story, excessive use of Codec conversations and new protagonist Raiden was criticized by a number of fans, temporarily relegating him to a joke character (even with Kojima himself) until his popular transformation in Metal Gear Solid 4.
Despite the controversy surrounding the unexpected bait-and-switch and convoluted storyline at the time, Sons of Liberty is today seen as a landmark title in the history of video games. It is considered the first truly postmodern video game, is frequently cited as a primary example of artistic expression in video games, and is generally considered one of the most influential games of the past decade, both for its artistic influence on later video game storylines (most notably Eternal Darkness, Killer7, Portal, and especially BioShock, which even featured a very similar plot twist) as well as its influence on the gameplay mechanics of many action games since."

Your description of the Anti-Federalists is absolutely incorrect. They FEARED a strong national government, and favored a system of independent states that could organize collective action through a CONFEDERAL government.
@FuturasoundProductions
@FuturasoundProductions 3 жыл бұрын
True, but in trying to discuss how these memes have evolved over time, I thought it would be too confusing to stick to that original distinction. Today, federalism roughly is much more associated with decentralized power, so it seemed appropriate to call the POV that calls for greater centralization, 'anti-Federalism'. This is cheating a bit, but it was necessary with the time frame I had. I admit if I had had the time, I would have explained this issue with more of the nuance it probably deserves, tackling how the 'Federalists' and 'Anti-Federalists' gave way to the modern Democratic and Republican Parties. Bbut this video was already tacking too large a number of topics as it is. So this pinned comment will have to suffice. Ironically, at the time of the Constitutional Convention, both sides declared the other side 'Anti-Federalist'. In a way this points to the very problem with words I'm describing throughout the entire video.

After watching this video, I think it's safe to say that @Futurasound Productions is a Leftist. Only a Leftist could see faith in a (secular) "gatekeeper" as a good thing-an especially ridiculous position considering most of the "conspiracy theories" concerning "gatekeepers" are proving to be true in this era of social media. Case in point: Is it "bad faith" to point out that KZfaq's removal of the Like-Dislike ratio was to suppress public narrative, or are you actually willing to believe it was to help smaller content creators? 🤨

Show me a "smart gun" technology that doesn't make the weapon itself extremely fragile, or that isn't easily taken off. I doubt it's mechanically feasible to do this until the concept is applied to an energy weapon's circuitry. Energy weapons are practically non-existent in infantry, and they're all essentially prototypes. I'd just call this political promises meant to placate voters.

Out of all the videos I've watched on philosophical theories in the modern world, I think this is the closest I've heard to an actual, no-holds-barred analysis and ANSWER to the main questions of postmodernism: "If every truth is fabricated to benefit the speaker and if everyone gets the same amount of say in what is happening, who should you believe and why?" And it's a Metal Gear Solid video. I love this fandom. EDIT: clarification

@@adriannitoiu9925 I'd be happy to! But rather than link them (I don't know how to format the links) I'll just tell you their names if that's ok : ) For postmodernism in philosophy and what its aim is, I recommend Tom Nicholas' video on postmodernism, part of the WTF (What The Theory). I like his content because he always clearly defines what he's talking about, to the best of his ability, and uses a lot of example situations rather than relying on previous knowledge. For the media's role in manufacturing consent I'd recommend reading Noam Chomsky's book by the same name, or watching Tom Nicholas' own video explaining it with an example (The Migrant Crisis). If you're curious about the history of the United States' racism from the 20th to the 21st century, I'd recommend Contrapoints: "America, still racist?" as a nice introduction. This video mentions a *lot* of different theories, ideologies and parties from the past 100 years and takes a lot of knowledge for granted, so I'm afraid I can't give a summary of all of them. Hopefully, however, these can provide an introduction to the topic~! :) It's really really interesting, and I hope this helps in understanding *why* truth is becoming such a difficult term to use. If you have any questions about anything in specific, or would like me to provide links to explain other specific things let me know and I'd be happy to~! We're all here to learn together

Sons of liberty is in some way a scary creepy game when you think about it. Joker 2019 film quite recent gave a phyical demonstration of its audiance, us and mury for that matter of what truth really is and how its said by "facts" that film struck so close too me personally and gave that reminder of what mgs2 said.

Not having ranked choice voting will do that. Gerrymandering and de facto stolen votes makes sure that such a binary arises. Other governmental and electoral systems have at least some kind of coalition government with concessions to minority political voices the more of the vote they get, especially when the leading parties fail to get a plurality. In that way it's not total power theft by the winner of s single office. But a two party system is easier to control the populace and make sure legislation favors those at the top of the pyramid no matter what.

I was brought up in the 90s there was no mention in Britain about a war what war what are you talking about there's nothing in the newspapers and news if there was a war we was not told about it. In the UK I don't remember going to a bunker

Is this video about the practicality of ideologies? I mean its alot if things but the center of this video seems to use this to explain why the world is the way it is.
