In this, the debut of my new long-form video essay series on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), I look at how the game comments not only on the history of the 20th Century, but on human nature, and the Times themselves.
************************
"Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the third installment of the Metal Gear Solid saga and chronologically the first part of the story: the origin of Big Boss. Set in 1964, the game is different from the first two games in that it is mainly set in a jungle environment. Stealth is very important to the gameplay of Snake Eater due to more advanced AI enemies, open environments, and (due to the arcane cold war technology) a lack of detailed, on-screen radars. Survival - performing minor surgery, bandaging wounds, eating wild animals - is a feature unique to this Metal Gear. Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, directed Snake Eater and the game is generally seen as an answer to the criticism that was given to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. A new engine was created for Snake Eater in order to create a richer graphical experience, and the gameplay was opened up to allow for more aggressive approaches.
An updated version of Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, was released on March 14, 2006, featuring a large number of side content in the style of VR Missions, and, most notably, an improved fully controllable camera, a first for the series. Snake Eater was packaged with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection in 2011 for PS3 and 360; in February 2012 Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D was released for the 3DS. Unfortunately, the bizarre Guy Savage nightmare is only playable in the original and Subsistence releases."

I'm replaying for the second time now, and I gotta say I'm in love. Bought it cuz I heard about MGS for years and obviously snake from smash bros, never thought I'd love it like I do. The controls are SO FUCKING BAD, but when you master them you feel like an absolute CHAMP! I didn't know basic CQC for over 1/2 my first play through lol no other game out there like it, truly a unique and charming experience. I bought every other MGS I could after that (except 4 cuz I'm on Xbox 😣)

That escalated song track in the end will never get old. When the Shagohod started chasing you, that was the most heightened/alarming action sequence ever put on pad. All of a sudden the entire game had changed it felt, no longer was it about precise stealth. I had no idea the Wisemen were actually based on a real group of men, that's fascinating.

In class, i had to hold a 15 minute long presentation about the Korean War. I spent 30 minutes on it, hid mgs references and absolutely smashed it. That was the first time most of my classmates learned that the cold war actually played out in more than East germany, learned about anti communism methods and especially proxy wars. Hello? Excuse me but how are you going to make a video about the Cold War, bring up interpreting history, and not address historical materialism (which was the Soviet unions method of studying societies development through history)?So, the world wouldn’t be split between interpreting history either as liberalism vs. realism, but liberalism/ realism/(constructivism) vs historical materialism. Please correct this
@FuturasoundProductions
@FuturasoundProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Historical materialism was inherently rooted in similar ideals as realism. Both were adverse to liberalism, and the fact your formulation requires putting liberalism and realism into the same category suggests serious shortcomings as a serious basis for understanding the largest competing strains undergirding social theory in the 20th Century. Furthermore, I never said these were the only two interpretations possible, rather that they are rivals. Either way, thanks for watching and commenting!

@@FuturasoundProductions what were the main opposing ideological positions in the Cold War? Was it between liberalism in liberal democracies and husserls understanding of realism in....wherever that’s lead to the formulation of some kind of state doctrine? Was it between liberals and ayn rands spin on realism, objectivism? No, no it’s not! Lol. The Cold War was mainly waged between a capitalist- liberal democratic state and a socialist- Marxist Leninist state...its relevant to the topic that you should maybe address historical materialism specifically otherwise you’re categorizing this specific understanding of history along with many others that pose little to no threat to capitalism and all of which don’t predicate their understanding of the world specifically in the development of material forces through history to arrive to their conclusions. Its akin to calling pasta and pizza the same because they both have mostly similar ingredients, ya know? I have to assume that this is the way they introduce Marxist ideas to students in some universities that might have an ideological bias of some kind. Maybe I’m wrong though.
@FuturasoundProductions

@@adoesntequala5871 I don't really think this has as much to do with Marxism as you are saying. However, in retrospect, given this is a series on the Cold War, it would have been a good idea to mention historical materialism. I totally get why you'd expect that, instead of 'liberalism v realism'. I don't believe liberalism and realism in terms of international relations are strictly speaking economic in nature: they refer to philosophies of, well, international relations. I know that might be difficult to accept, given (IMO) historical materialism reduces all complexity and culture and history into a readymade narrative of economics and 'class warfare'. But that assumes an antagonistic relationship among the polity, so when you think about it, arguably, it's more or less an offshoot or cousin of realism. BUT I will definitely need to bring up the central tenets of Marxism in future episodes, and in a way this conversation has been very helpful. So thank you for watching and commenting! Please let me know, once I get to the subject, whether I leave anything out.

@adoesntequala5871 3 жыл бұрын
@@FuturasoundProductions regardless of what our opinions are of the matter, it’s important to address the matter accurately. Marxism Leninism is a philosophy that informs economics, interpretation of history, international relations, etc because it’s a foundational shift away from the idealist nature of liberalism. It seems as though your approach to the matter is extremely western/liberal centric ( I don’t blame you if you don’t know any better either, it seems to be the dominant ideology in western liberal democracies) Here’s a link to a video on the Marxist understanding of international relations : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7h6rKdq0N_YpJ8.html Maybe your opinion is that historical materialism, marxism Leninism, or Marxism entirely oversimplifies the complexity of the world, but the nature of Marxism Leninism is based in material reality and therefore utilizes the scientific method to understand the world. If the goal of science is to study and draw from the particular in order to apply such learned principles to the universal then all of science could be seen as overly simplistic. I’m aware there is debate about whether Marxism could be seen as scientific or not, but that’s besides the point here and I’m happy to go into that matter sometime later. If I’ve misrepresented any of your positions, I apologize. Let me know and I’ll make any necessary corrections. Anyhow, Your videos are great but you are so heavy handedly biased against ‘totalitarianism’, or at least it comes off that way in analyzing Kojima’s messages . If you haven’t, I encourage you to read up on the Congress of cultural freedom and specifically “America and the cultural Cold wars in Europe” by Volker R. Berghahn. Maybe even challenge your assumptions completely and read “Khrushchev lied” by Grover furr.

I should remember the Bolsheviks do not have a monopoly on historical materialism (the irony of that statement, eh?) I welcome discussions like these, and when the time comes to address this in a video, I'll be sure to tackle the subject accurately, and try to rhetorically separate for the viewer the facts, from my point of view.

I like your content pretty much but I have to say... Asking for 30k views in 2 weeks while you barely have 48k subs and talking about a niche game that is mostly dead by today standard is kinda a stretch.

One day all good things come to an end. Eventually you will have to stop making videos and that is going to be the saddest day of my life.

@@adoesntequala5871 Kojima has an even shakier grasp on history, like the Philosopher's legacy being America, China and Russia starting a secret group that amasssed more money than existed at the time while Russia was having a revolution and China a civil war. I still find myself frustrated with these videos that assume the USSR and China were brutal dictatorships off the bat and we just have to take it as fact. The S3 program was a pretty obvious metaphor for manufacturing consent in the digital age. This is what no Parenti does to people
