SnS is my favorite melee weapon in all the Monster Hunter series! I love the new combos and jump attacks they added but I'm gonna miss that jump lunge attack.. :(

"SNS is not a beginners's weapon" -> This totally was my opinion when I used it once in the beginning at MH Tri, I used it again in the MH4U demo and love it since then. I just waited for this tutorial because of that, it's a runner up for my main weapon.

Love your videos, and SnS is one of my favorite weapons! You missed one thing with the jump back attack though, i'm starting to think a lot of people don't know about it at all, because i sure didn't. You can actually do the jump back cold from shield position, letting you use it as a more defensive counter. Just press R to block, then hold back and A and you'll go right into it. gives you access to the move with less strings attatched, and gives the shield a bit more of a use too.

SylemGistoe Well, I found out that, if you press forward when you're charging that attack, you'll go farther with the attack. Don't remember if it's in this video though, hope that'll help you ^_^

I have 300 hours of SnS racked up. It's the scrappiest weapon you can have when you have to fight close up. And the backstep chop they put in this game is just icing on the cake. Tip I want to throw out there in case it hasnt been said: When youre flying in on a downed monster and your attacks whiff because its flailing around, let the combo end and hold R, with the stick tilted where you wanted to face. When your character guards, itll also spin to face wherever the stick is tilting, so you can quickly turn around and immediatley start attacking again. Rolling from side to side also helps lay in dps, I think.

I play SnS more than any other melee weapon in the game, and the best tip I know is the attack you do while climbing the ledge at 6:32. It is one of the most underrated attacks the SnS has. If the monster is near the ledge, use that opportunity to mount it! You will surprise a lot of people who don't know about that attack. I have a lot of friends who try SnS, but struggle with its downsides. The best suggestion I gave them was to try the Lance out. The Lance is the polar-opposite of the SnS in advantages and disadvantages. a lot of Lance users I know are closet-SnS users and vice versa. I always struggled to hunt faster, more agile monsters with the Lance; but can always keep up with them with the SnS. When my SnS can't reach a bipedal monster that is too tall for it, I would use the lance to reach it! Always mix it up between hunts to get the best of both weapons!

Im a SnS Pro too, and these skills i picked up and mastered since Freedom Unite. (my first MH) and its a blast to see that all these combos expanded to my liking and how awesome i breeze through and heal others as I go along the hunt. because SnS is my Choice of the Hunt!

Glad you put alot of attention on the item usage on SnS, especially pairing it with Wide Range. My current set has Wide Range +2, Speed Eating +2, Rationer, Eva +1, and (as a bonus) HQ Earplugs. Still waiting for one of my god charms to make it better though. >

You forgot to add in that you can do a charge attack straight from shielding. If you hold R to shield then hold back on the control stick & A you can jump right into a charge attack instead of having to attack first then hold back & A. Good for soloing when you have no bombs left for a sleeping monster and you want a good strong hit for waking it. It's also helpful for a starting blow if you are close to a monster as, if you do it right, you can get around 4 hits in one charge attack move alone. This is a very helpful tutorial though! I did not know that the X&A attack also gave you a period of super armor, that's going to be very helpful to remember!

The R + A attack is what I generally use to set off barrel bombs as the shield catches the blast giving you a quicker recovery and keeping you near the monster (as opposed to the bomb sending you flying with a regular attack). You automatically shield after, so if you don't have the evade skill to dodge the blast it's a really good alternative. It's also good if you are shielding and want to stay in one particular spot (as all other attack animations have you move forwards) and you want to hit a small monster that's in your way (I'm looking at you Konchu). The final use that I could see for it is if you are defending and you only have a small second to get a hit in before you have to block again. I've rarely done that personally as I'd rather evade, but the times I have done it was when I was trying to cut a tail or the monster is starting to limp away and a second Large monster was rushing towards me at the same time.

Whenever I see a new video posting on your Tumblr I am here in an instant, even if I intended on sleeping. Sns is also the most underrated weapon among my friends (who are all fairly new to the game compared to me) I just loved the play style of it and it grew on me ever since freedom 2. Greatsword was my weapon of choice in Freedom, I just had no idea how to use it. Or even play the game for that matter.

Roberto Gonzalez I already reached 1200 by now. I'm trying to master every weapon class and build sets for each of them, that's why I spent so much time in this game. I also play solo most of the time, so farming takes longer.

The ability to use items without putting away your weapon actually makes it a better support tool than horn in some cases. Fast attack speed = ideal for status inflicting. Shield helps against roars, flashes and tremors, and will save you in desperate situations. And then there's the all important stylish bombing.

I noticed the hop back (from back + A) takes Stamina (but not the attack itself) which made me think that since attacks generally don't cost stamina but evasion moves do, that the back hop might be an evasion move with invincibility frames, like LS's Evade Slash. Possibly even affected by Evade+1/2. Is this the case? Can you actually dodge attacks with a timed hop back, using it as a kind of dodge-then-counter move, or is it really only for adding more flow options to the combos?

the back hop does have i-frames, and it can be increased with evade +1,2, or 3.

Now I aproove the message about SnS ans a pro Weapon, I manage to make a mix set for the Ancientshard sword (the one that have like 700+ Dragon attack) that game me challenger +2, elemental up, weakness exploit and sharness +1 and bear Gogma urgent, although it was 45 minutes long (in the second phase he was almost always flying, also I'm still learnign how to dodge it's attacks) i got to G-special thanks to the SnS, and now it;s one on my main weapons, along with Gunlace and insect Glaive.

I've definately grown on this weapon. I love the Cats Paw and am waiting with anticipation to upgrade it. My other favorite is the bow, I'd say. Provides great rapid fire.

Been experimenting with the rising ledge jump for mounting, and did you know that you can alter the direction of it? if you hit X&A when approaching the cliff then hit left or right on the control stick BEFORE you are airborn you can jump in that direction? It's not a tiny shift either, you can go almost 90 degrees in that change of direction if you time it right. Very helpful to do for if the monster moves or if it is in an awkward position that you can't reach going straight to mount it (or if it is just at the edge where it's blocking you or if it's about to do a breath attack)

awwwww snap dude that's awesome stuff! Just made my first SnS today after derping around in the Arena with one, it cut tails pretty awesome, but WHAT u can jump UP a ledge! I love mobility and this wep is CRAZY this gen! So glad to see some love for it finally!

i didnt know about the bombing evade, thats so cool! but i think you also left one small thing out, and thats that you can actually use the backjump and charge attack out of guard as well wich means there is no need to first do an attack, just hold R and then do back hop like normal.. i dont think i saw that in the video. also you can use the upwards jump attack when you climb up a ledge if youre weapon is sheathed as well by pressing X+A with the right timing.

theres a couple things you didnt mention or possibly didnt know respectively. 1. after doing a slash on a cliff, you can do another, you technically showed this at least. 2. another way to set off a bomb without blowing yourself up. if you dont have evasion+, just hold shield and use R+A (something i dont think you mentioned) and it will do a fast slash and go back into a block which will stop the explosion from blowing you up.

Sword and shield is one of my top choices. You just have to find an upgrade path that you like. But I didn't know that you could use items with it lol! But I love this weapon because I always wanted to bash something with a shield. And with this I could do so. Bwahahaha hah ! Great videos brotha! Keep it up

the last MH game i played was unite. there are a lot of utilities and new movesets for each weapon now (i watched all of them). i was more of a hammer guy and i never really changed weapons. now im considering to try all of them. back then i dont remember doing all these new moves. wow!

sns now is actually a very good weapon. easy to pick up.... but also difficult to master. the backhop ->charge attack gives the sns the ability to chain an endless combo if done right, give the SnS another hard hitting move *which you can chain into from the standard A-A-A Finisher* and allows you to perform a short backward leap as a dodge of sorts *positioning is really important here as your dodge distance is considerably less than the side rolls out of a combo... dunno if evade dist skill covers the back hop too* then theres the upward leap attack *the only weapon that can execute this* and the signature ability to use items without sheathing....... its a very good multipurpose weapon now :)

When using the pull back attack i though you had to charge it for a certain amount of time or it wouldn't be as effective? Like if you under charge it it does the quick attck , charge it to where the shune hits the handle it does the super ground slam attack, and if you over charge it it will do a weaker move. You didn't really explain the attack enough. This was one of the main weapons i was hoping to see a tutorial for because it is one of my favorite weapon types to use, and this tutorial seemed to fall short compared to all your other tutorials. I'm pretty disappointed in it actually. However i still love what you are doing, its really helping beginning hunters who have only played mh3u and veteran hunters like myself who have played every game past monster hunter freedom. Thank you can't wait for the next tutorial (hope its better though)

The SnS charge is different from the Charge Axe (Sword Mode) charge as you don't need to "time" your release of the A button. The SnS charge only has two states of charge where you 1: Instantly release the A button as soon as you jump back (Charge-in attack) OR 2: Keep on holding onto the A button after the backward jump (Ground-slamming attack). However, what's interesting is that you can then "time" WHEN you want to do the Ground-slamming attack by holding then releasing that A button a few milliseconds sooner or later.

Fear not young one, I am a disciple of the Monster Hunter Universe. In the Monster Hunter universe, one should not aspire to "main" a weapon. Some monsters will be more vulnerable to certain weapons than others. Rathalos, for instance has a head that just sticks out as a hammer target, but if you want to cut off its tail rather than end the fight quickly you should use a longsword or lance. For you, I suggest testing out weapons on the actual story quests instead of the weapon tutorials. Then you'll know.

Also, just a very personal bit of advice: I recommend you don't start with dual blades or longsword, as they provide a "comfort" of sorts to newer players. When I hear of someone only using one weapon, it's one of these two. I recommend starting with else and learning the DB and LS once you're more acquainted with this installment on Monster Hunter. They are great weapons, after all.

WhenTheNincadasCry I understand where you're coming from but respectfully disagree. I used the LS/bow for MHP2/G and MHP3rd and my friend the GS. We both did use other weapons from time to time and during our initial learnings. Each weapon has something it does well, as you said on the LS with tail cutting but I don't think it's more of picking weapons to suit the target. I think it's really choosing a weapon that should go well with your playstyle and goals. I enjoyed breaking parts so I used the LS for the most part, while my friend enjoyed his 3 charge slams of pain. I do agree that they do provide a certain sense of comfort to players but perhaps your advice is meant to tell OP to test out all the weapons as opposed to not start with one?

NoelClover89 I see. I've never played Monster Hunter with other people and thus have never felt the joy of having your own unique playstyle side by side with that of another person's. As a result I am adept with many weapons (Hammer, Dual Blades, Switch axe, Charge Blade, Sword and Shield, Lance, Longsword) and pull one out of the red box at home depending on my mood. To each their own!

I´ll learn a lot how ro use Sword and Shield in this game and master it in MHX. BTW, I discovered that if you do the R+A attack on bombs you will detonate them and block the explosion, so It´s another way to detonate them.

BEgan playing in MH3U In which i dismissed SnS because it took forever to kill things even with correct elemental (compared to other weapons) In mh4 i decided to give it another try, mostly because nerscylla sword looks wicked. And ill be damned, Sleep -> BB-L+ (some occasions more than 4...) = Doom >:3 And the online utility of trapmaster, dear lord :O I never knew how versatile this weapon was, but now that i learned the fact that i just need shitton of items & trapmaster... It has become my fav weapon along with charge blade :D

Thanks for the tutorial. During the demo I noticed that the Sns got a few changes. I used it pretty often back in Tri and, because of the reintroduction of the Dual Swords, less in 3U. It got a lot of positive changes and I´m going to use them a lot in 4U. Again thanks for the tutorial, I was wondering how to trigger the round slash besides during the a-combo string.

So, is the info on that X finisher current? I actually see merit to it. I've found from experimenting that you can continue to the A combo from it (more hits is always better for a speed wep) and sending team mates flying isn't as bad now that they can use that to do mounts. If I'm missing something, feel free to correct me.

Mushroom Lover Mushrooms give special effects (blue = recovery, nitro = power seed, paralysis = defense seed, poison = nutrition drink, futabire = stamina drink, mandogora = ancient potion)

I have a question about combo finishers. In a lot of speed run videos I see, people completely forgo the final A slash (the strong, sweeping one), finishing at the A upswing. Why is that? I thought the round slash finisher was a powerful move, and I notice barely any difference in endlag when using it.

You can evade the blast without evade skills, it just takes a bit of practice (just like evading roars without these skills)

My weapons were: MHF2 --> Bow / Longsword MHFU --> Greatsword / Bow MH3U --> switchaxe / Hammer MH4U --> SnS / Hammer... Ok yes I love the hammer swings but the SnS is my main weapon now.. it's just perfect!

One of the best weapons for mounting, use items without the sheatening delay, now has an attack with a decent power, fast attacks, and a shield to block roars. I used to ignore this weapon but now I see how awesome it is. My only complain is the short reach.

Ranzord95 that was always my main issue with it too. trying to cut tails from anything other than tigrex, narga and barioth was a pain. flying monsters are a pain too once you run out of flash bombs. my favorite thing about SnS was the fact that it was a little bit sharper than other weapons with the same color of sharpness.

I am a SnS user have been since the beginning back in 2004 something I always see is that a lot of new SnS users do is not hugging the monster but keeping a fair distance which I do not get because hugging the monster has always saved my ass maybe its a new style.

The only fight I had the SnS fail me was the kamu/nono hunt in Frontier. The proximity is a huge issue when it comes to the needle/ninja attacks. Oh, and Berukyurusu, It just seems too resistant for SnS. I love SnS, I was even able to cut off gravios' tails with it and keep hitting that weak chest/belly.

Suddenly SnS looks appealing. Is it a good starting weapon? I man it's real power shines with added status or elemental attacks and those only really appear mid/late game. Also If I had a choice between an 2 same type elemental SnS, should I go with higher damage or elemental?

You're looking to focus more on elemental damage. previously in 3U, elemental damage was bugged, but its fixed and in full effect now.

For 1st question: IMO its one of the most forgiving weapon to start. I really like fast style of play and the ability to cancel out of any frame of attack to dodge. Makes it a really safe weapon unlike SA or DS which sometimes lock you into animation. SnS is also generally strong throughout the game, and anyway you unlocked the elemental weapons pretty early on. (Your first drake) For 2nd qn: I always stick to a balance of elemental and raw. You won't have to worry much though, the stronger elemental weapon for each type is generally very straightforward.

ninjaone1 oh any lazydude77 sence no one said this id like to throw it in if ur worryed about damage dont be anyweapon could get you through lowrank with minor difficulty its not untill high rank you have to worry about elemental weaknesses and stuff and by that point you have access to what you need so the only disadvantage is that sns has maybe 1-5 min longer kill time over other weapons (depending on relative skill with other weapons but you get my point i hope)

Is it just my imagination, or does the back hop actually have I-Frames? I've noticed I was able to hop back and travel the entire distance of a hop through a roar when I used Evasion skills. I still got caught up in the roar when I reached the end of the jump, so they aren't complete and only count while traveling backwards...but if I'm correct, wouldn't you be able to use this as a counter? Dodge a hit with the back hop, jump strike to return the blow?

On my way to get to HR999 I’ve been troubled by which weapon should I focus on. I’ve mained the GL for LR, the Bow for HR, the CB for GR, and Lance for post GRank. However, for a change of pace, I’m deciding whether I pick the GS or SnS until I get to HR999. Any suggestions?

At 2:30, it says I can loop with X+A after A-A, but I only get the ender that doesn't lead into a loop. What's that about?

is that charged hit new? it looks like the jump in attack it had in mh3u but i dont recall being able to do it there. i may have to pick this weapon up again after all and learn that charged jump attack. that will probably be my new staple attack if i do

ya its new they took out the jump attack as a combo starter but reused it as a combo extentder of sorts

Does anyone know if the Wide-Range ability and Mushroom Lover trick works on ALL Mushrooms, or only ones similar to what Wide-Range worked on before? Will all of these mushrooms work for the whole group? Ex: Will Mopeshrooms give Dash Juice effect similarly to Hunting Horn negate stamina use? One of the only things I dislike about MH games is accentuated by the S&S - the characters are always left handed :s A tiny issue, sure, but I'm so cack-handed in real life it weirds me out seeing my character hold the shield on the right arm...

They're ambidextrous, they use right handed grips for most weapons actually. It's just weapons with shields they hold with their left hand instead of right. Possibly due to either animation problems with a sword sticking through their head when they use an item with SnS, or the devs just really liked Zelda games. Late reply, but eh have a good day or night anyhow.

Jonathan Gzz Exactly - it does make a difference to the feel/immersiveness of the game, and giving everyone that feeling would be as simple as mirroring all the character's movements left-to-right.

at 2:32 you say after A-A press X+A to loop the combo or press A again for the finisher. When I do it it just uses the finisher which is the same as pressing A again. Maybe I don't get what you are saying here

They are the same. Just get evade+1 or 2, and focus on sharpness up and attack raising stuff. For this reason I love Honed blade+razor sharp, but sharpness+1 + challenger+2 is good too

Josh Haworth The 4-Part Set Gaijin showed in this one video is good. Get a helm with razor sharp and a talisman and you have. My talisman has razor sharp +6 2 slots.

Why does it look like the X combo is actually 4 moves: upslash, downslash, side slash, finisher move (don't do this)

I have the uka uka set with guard +2 and using the sns. Is it viable? I can easily block the ukanlos dive and the akantor's full body slam. If I take out the guard+2 will I still be able to still block those without getting hurt a lot?

***** well I already have sharpness+1 and attack up S, and I've tried to slot evasion+2 and evade distance, but I couldn't. I guess I'll have to get another talisman or some crap and also test the shield without that guard+2
