Dutch Bucket Hydroponics - How It Works & How to Make Your Own Buckets

I've been building a new Dutch Bucket hydroponic system and finally have everything completed and functioning quite well. In this video, I'll explain the lessons that I learned from my first setup back in the Spring, along with changes made for this new setup. Also, I'll share how easy it is to make your own dutch (bato) buckets.
This is a very simple recirculating hydroponics system that works great for fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. It can be set up inside a greenhouse, in your backyard, or on your porch.
For my nutrient mix, I use Masterblend 4-18-38, mixed to the manufacturers specifications. It is available online at various places, but I order from Morgan County Seeds out in Missouri. Other types of hydroponic fertilizers can be used just as well.

Exceptional video man, it's rare that someone makes a video that's informative, simple and with good intentions. So many people lack the funds necessary to start something like this that's why I like that you focused on the fact that you can do this for next to nothing compared to other setups, step by step and easy to follow directions. Bobby I followed you back in 2012-15 in S Carolina and set up our garden with Dutch buckets- the results were AMAZING! We fed ourselves AND our neighbors and put years worth of food at the same time. Boy you aint kiddin. I started germinating seeds in march after the “voluntary mandAtory” stay home order took effect and im harvesting Zucchini, crook neck, onions, chives, lettuce and strawberries and soon to have tomatoes, potatoes, radishes and beans. Im out of space in my beds so this is great.

This guy got me going on hydroponics years ago. A slight add on is to put the pump in one of the paint bags and zip tie , much like a prefilter . Works like a charm. BTW from year to year the paint bags degrade and some perlite might get through, thus the reason for fiter bag.

Nicejob. I've seen the system taken one step further and made into an aquaponic system. You could make your reservoir bigger, put a mess of perch in there and you have anaquaponic system. The fish keep the plants healthy, the plants keep the waterclean. Set your pump up on a car battery/inverter and solar panel to keep it charged.

Just wanted to say, that after watching your videos last Spring, I decided to try out your dutch bucket system. I found it hard to find buckets that were at least 3 gallons, and when shopping for perlite, I found the price way to expensive for me to afford. I decided to go with what I had available around the house. I came up with using 5 2lb plastic coffee containers. (Maxwell house and Folgers) I installed the rubber grommets along with the pvc elbows just as you did in the buckets. I filled the coffee containers with regular pea gravel from menards, filled up my reservoir with hydroponic tomato fertilizer I found on ebay in Ohio and transplanted my tomato plants into the coffee containers filled with pea gravel. I just want people and yourself to know that I had pretty good success with this. I had a decent yield of tomatoes, plants grew out of hand, I had to prune like crazy mainly because I didn't have much height in this proto-type greenhouse I had put together very quickly out of cattle panels so I only had around less than 6 feet of room from the floor and the containers were on a bench about 2 feet up from the floor.

Gratz on your ingenuity. Although there are a lot of systems and components available commercially, the ideas and prototypes for those were dreamed up and created by common people. A heads up: 3.5gal black buckets are available at homedepot and anything over $17'ish for 4 cuft of perlite is too much. Check seed stores in agricultural areas.

Hello I wanted to start out by saying that I love your videos. My question is what you thought of using pea gravel and perlite together. I was thinking that I would put some pea gravel in the bottom half of the bucket and perlite in the top half. The reason being is that it get so windy out here in Calhan Co i thought that the pea gravel would work for two reasons. One to add weight to the buckets and the other to keep the perlite from going through the bucket. Basically allowing me not to have to use the paint strainers.

Why not use pea gravel for the whole thing. It is drastically cheaper, just heavier. Maybe that is the trick. Buy it in quantity from a gravel yard/pit. Might not want to move the buckets. They will weigh a lot. Maybe, put a false bottom. Those roots don't seem to be going very deep anyway.

Just a thought: If you use just a small 1 inch square of paint strainer mesh you can slip that over the pipe going in the container then slip the elbow over it. This will simply put the filter in the pipe and you wont have to but but maybe 1 of the meshes for 100 or so buckets.

it seems like to me that pea gravel would be better for the environment than pearlite and be easier to reuse and be cheaper if you buy it by the truck load.. you get one load and just keep going back to it over and over again.. it could also be used for many other purposes around the house. It also removes the need for a paint strainer.

Only issues with pea gravel is that it's not always ph neutral. It depends on the environment it was sourced from, so you need to test it before you use it.

I was all set to try your dutch bucket setup as it looks pretty awesome. one small problem you can't get any perlite in New Jersey unless you buy small bags and they are way expensive. The bag you are showing is i believe a 4 cubic foot bag. I could only find a couple places that had any perlite at all and they cost $20 for 1 cubic foot. The $17 bag you show would be $80 here in New Jersey. Thanks for sharing your information.

i had trouble a few years ago finding large bags of perlite but found at my local nursery/garden store. had to ask them because i only saw small bags in their store but they had large bags probably twice the size he had in video in the back and it was like $25. i would start calling all nursery supplies or home/feed stores in your area they should have or can order for you. i only use it for making potting soil but that bag i have had for 3-4 years and still have not used over half of bag.

@@DustinDonohue "Food grade" = A buzzword invented by the chemical industry to intentionally trick people into thinking it's much safer than ordinary plastics because it contains new kinds of plastic that hasn't been deemed dangerous yet by the authorities because there is always and without exception a 5-20 year lag before the 1000 diseases are detected independent reserachers map out are taken seriously by the authorities, who will face an army of lawyers if they don't have the research stemming from 5-20 years. The banning and invention of new subtances has followed this exact pattern for decades and there are no exceptions to the rule. When teflon was found cancerous, "anti-stick" was the new buzzword invented to take it's place, while it contained the exact same amount of PFOA, which was the problem with teflon. The only safe subtances for hydroponic setups are 1) silicone 2) ceramics 3) wood 4) metal. Said army of lawyers will kill babies and drink their blood if they can. BPA is still found in a billion products thanks to them, despite it having been banned by most of the world. The greatest source of income for these lawyers is Monsanto-Bayer, who is such a routinely evil and genocidal company it's like it's from a cartoon. The things they've done to keep being evil despite the last 50 years knowing full well what they are doing, is straight out of a sick, sinister cartoon.

I use rainwater from a collection barrel. The pH is 6.5 . I add 15 ml (one tablespoon) of Pure Blend Pro (Grow) per gallon. This drops my pH to 4.0. I add 1 ml of pH Up per gallon. This brings my pH back up to 6.0 and I have the correct amount of nutrients for my cukes and 'maters.

Add the volumes to get total volume and follow mixing i structions. A TDS or EC meter will tell you the strength based on electric conductuvity of the soloution. Larger plants tolerate stronger soloutions.

You are an amazing source of information. I have always been organic - I have a ton of allergies and sensitivities to chemicals. I have been interested in hydroponics and aquaponics for decades, but have never seen any information that looked at doing it inexpensively- until this. I really want to try this. '

I'm really excited to give this a try! I am up in New Hampshire and I've been toying with indoor hydroponics set ups this winter but it's not good for tomatoes, I can't wait to use the dutch bucket system this year outside and see how it goes! It seems like it will even save a lot of water. This is great!
