I just finished reading Mhudi only today - part of the African Writes Series & the "first-English-novel-published-by-a-black-South-African." What a classic! In the foreword Sol Plaatjie himself writes: "South African literature has hitherto been almost exclusively European, so that a foreword seems necessary to give reasons for a Native (black African) venture." Bessie Head also had this to say about the book: "When I first read this beautiful book, I was absolutely in despair. I needed to copy the whole book out by hand so as to keep it with me. It is more than a classic; there is just no book on earth like it. All stature and grandeur of the writer are in it."
