Eh, I think she's only in my top 5 most hated. Kirin, Kulve (MR), and Kushala for sure beat her. Black Blos probably. Kirin because all they ever do to make it harder is to make it deal nonsensically high damage... when I play on a laptop and it shits on my framerate. Kulve because she runs away and is built entirely on MMO style DPS checks. Fuck that. Kushala because it spends all its time bullshitting just out of reach, plus its stupid-ass broken wing hitboxes that have no collision for my kinsect over a year later. It's either stunlocked or waiting simulator and that's nothing resembling fun. Black Blos especially in MR. That stupid AI gets stuck in frustrating anti-gameplay dig loops unless you cheese it with screamers. Eh, Lunastra can be fifth.. For the bullshit damage on the bullshit hitboxes. She really didn't have to have Kirin-style overscaled nonsense on top of her tail hitting half the room. Also, Luna *cheats.* Her introduction in the arena gave her AT multipliers for some reason.

Lunastra gave me quite a problem, but I managed to get wind resist and from then on I bodied her regularly -(shit this sounds so wrong, but you get what I am saying lmao)- My most hated monster in IB is definitely Kushala and, wait for it, Banbruh. Kushala? Even Wind Resist build doesn't prevent you from getting blown away from his aura. And he floats the whole goddamn hunt. *-Bitch you aint Pennywise, get the fuck down there-* Banbruh? He is fun when faced alone, *but when it comes to quests in maps/regions it becomes a whole new definition of obnoxious-ness.*

is the thing i never get of World/Iceborne. A lot of QoL improvements (or changes, depending on your mindset), but they took out Pause? Why? I get why when youre playing online, but if youre playing offline (or a mission alone) theres no reason to not leting us pause. There is a reason why they didn't call this game MH 5, despite what veteran hunters call it. The Developers have said it numerous times in interviews, and Developer Diaries, that they wanted MHW to be it's own entry in the Genre that introduces more people outside of Japan to what the Japanese have been enjoying for the past since the release of the 1st MH game. The risks they took, in the way of gameplay, quality of life changes, were not for the benefit of veteran hunters, but to not discourage newer hunters dropping the game after just trying it for the first time. I am one of these new hunters. MHW was my first introduction to the MH genre, and for a person who doesn't like soul's like games as much as others, I could not put this games down from when I first started playing. I want to get past that first wall, of defeating a monster. I did it without any guides or tutorial videos, only after the base story did I even look at weapon tutorial videos, like Arekkz Gaming's, Rurikhan's, and your's Gaijin Hunter. One lost game save file, 4 separate character creations, and 5000+ hours later, I still enjoy playing this game, solo and with other Hunters/Streamers. This game got me interested in playing MHGU, and I look forward to the next iteration of MH that Capcom releases, portable or otherwise. I just hope that they release more monsters this time, explore what is possible in the way of gameplay mechanics, rather than limiting them...ahem(clutch claw) ahem.

I have no problem with HBG having the highest damage potential in the game, but only if that damage comes with some risk involved.

What disappointed me the most is that almost every monster is a wyvern or an elder dragon. I miss the neopterons like the Seltas family, the crabs and the beasts. Also I kind of miss the wyverns with a serpentine skeleton like Agnaktor or Najarala or even Lagiacrus. For the rest, I love the game more than any other title I played, to be honest. Edit: they had to build the game engine from scratch, so the lack of skeleton variety is somewhat excusable. Can't wait to see what they will do for the next home console / PC title. I'll skip the switch.

I remember hearing they tried to bring in serpentine Monsters such as Lagiacrus but couldn't get the skeleton to work well with the environment at the time and decided to forego it as a compromise. I think, this being the first MH where they don't use the same skeletons as former titles because of a change in game-engine, that it's a genuine wonder we got so many different designs in the first console game taking everything into consideration.

As Gaijin even pointed out, the Safi weapons are really cool in their customization options. I really feel that the major miss on them was that it's too easy to make them best in class for so many things. When Safi first released the best build for any weapon RAW, Element, or status was almost always a Safi weapon, and I feel like they would have worked a lot better to simply be one of the better weapons in the end game (as opposed to the best). The ability to put whatever monster set skill I wanted on the weapon and then customize the element, damage, sharpness, etc makes them the ultimate comfort weapons and a great way to counter bad Decoration rolls.
@Lunk42
@Lunk42 4 жыл бұрын
My least favourite part about them is how most of the time you'll need to do the quest multiple times just to beat it ONCE it sucks knowing you were a few hits away from a win but the timer is up and so you just have to watch them leave, part of me wants to continue upgrading my safi weapons but I'm so sick of the fight and how shitty my RNG is with the awakened skills. Even when I quit without saving and come back I still can't get good rolls. The fight itself is a drag at this point cause it feels more like you're fighting his feet rather than safi himself.

At least in world the monsters can be aggressive and constantly moving.
@lovedeluxe2154
@lovedeluxe2154 4 жыл бұрын
Regarding "Monsters run away too much", I think that's not really that true. Monsters have always moved around a lot, and thanks to camp fast travel we no longer have the problem of catching up a Rathalos or something just in time to see it leave and go somewhere else. The reason people notice monsters running away more is because of the lack of loading screens and zoned areas. Before, if a monster moved from one area to the adjacent area, it took you a few seconds to cross the small arena zone you were in to the loading zone, then you had a short loading screen, then you were back in the fight. Now you have to run after it and see the monster running away while you chase. The further it's moving, the longer that lasts. So you are more conscious of the time you are chasing a moving a monster, and it lasts longer and takes longer to get from A to B, and this is something that can't be fixed without removing the new connected map concepts and going back to the old arena zones, or without making it that monsters basically don't move from one place to another. But I love the fact that monsters move. Often the different terrain or things you can use can change the way a hunt feels, it keeps it fresh. You can suddenly have access to things like poisoncups and nitrotoads and paratoads that you can use to your advantage or be detrimental to you. Ledges and slopes in different areas can be used in a much more diverse, interesting, and organic way than they were in previous generations; they become opportunistic and you can use the resources of each area to your advantage if you know how to, which feels great! Fighting a monster in one locked-down arena can be compelling (Alatreon, Raging Brachydios's final area, etc) but the movement makes hunts of most things feel more different, more interesting. Similarly people talk about the "deliberateness" of old weapons, and this was true, to an extent. But there was also a lot of jank and awkwardness, bad quality of life, and glaring flaws in weapon moveset designs. That had to go to make the series feel more accessible, and it's better for it. To make monsters faster and more fluid and alive, they had to allow hunters to be more free. Hunters were always powerful, we're just now more able to leverage that power, and have access to ever more ways to lock down monsters (which offsets making them move more and having more aggressive AI and better hitboxes so they don't get too frustrating and hard. Coordinated, skilled play can shut them down without resorting to specific niche templates like HAME used to. They're also things that any weapon can do, rather than having everyone play Insect Glaive and trivialise half the monsters by doing so, as in 4U). And I don't agree with the complaints about colour. We don't have the same on-hit effects, palettes are less saturated, but World and Iceborne are full of beautiful colour palettes. Walk around each of the major maps, or each area of the Guiding Lands, and compare it to the way maps used to look. Look at the sky, and compare it to how the sky used to look. We don't need sparkly gold hit effects and huge blood effects, and the hyper-saturated armour and weapon colours of previous generations would look horrible and clash violently in a world with as much colour as the maps now have. Just look at how jarring and nasty a lot of mods look; the colour palettes are focussed on producing a cohesive world in the new games. I'm rambling and will end this comment here, I think this is all very subjective.

I think the best fix is to reduce the number of tiny pointless paths in maps, make sure that they link to main areas in a decisive manner, and have large areas closer together. Ancient Forest is awful and is only enjoyable once you have the Tailraider Ride for that map. And sometimes to follow a monster you have to go away from it, running all around the map, to get to a path that finally leads to that area. And maybe have monsters run to closer areas, not all the way across the other side of the map to sleep.

Man, I cut my teeth on 4u, got big into Generations, and then played world, and I gotta say that I've got very positive impressions of all three, for different reasons. 4U was very well paced, I enjoyed the story, the weapons all felt satisfying and viable, and the game just had *character* for lack of a better term. Gen was 4U minus the story, but with a cool spin on the gameplay with styles and hunter arts. Personally, I think styles were a good one-of gimmick, and don't think they should return, but on the other hand, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Hunter Arts return in the future. Some of the styles were a bit op *coughadeptcough* but that's a balance issue, not necessarily a design one. Deviants also were a neat idea I wouldn't mind revisiting. Then we get to MHW, and wow does it feel drastically different from the other two. First of all, it's absolutely gorgeous, from the environments to the monsters and everything in between. The music and sound design is peerless and adds to the spectacle of the hunts. Spectacle is actually a very appropriate term for world, and I don't mean that in a negative way. There is a sense of scale and awe that is leagues above previous entries. The quality of life changes are for the most part extremely welcome (goodbye forever pick-axe, I hope) and the core gameplay loop of hunt-craft-repeat is satisfying as ever. Moving to GenU and Iceborne, GenU was literally just more Generations, and that's a good thing if you loved Gen (and I did), whereas Iceborne felt like it added more meat to the experience. Both games represent the apex of their respective styles. Speaking of, let's talk about the one thing I absolutely despise in all three games: Apex, Hyper, and Tempered monsters. I love these games, but [Insert Monster Name]+ style of design can absolutely fuck right off forever. It has more health, does more damage, and... end of design. These are never optional either (to be honest, I never really got into Apex much, so I don't remember everything about 4Us endgame), and I honestly hate it. I like playing solo, and these monsters are so incredibly punishing that it goes from being a challenge to me being 2-hit combo killed, or ragdolled around until I cart, and it's just not satisfying to me. I absolutely can (and do) take down Tempered Elder dragons and metal Raths and whatnot, but I really don't enjoy it at all. Not entirely sure why this is. Maybe instead of tempered, we get deviants again next time. Instead of Ebony Odogaron++, we get Shadow King Odogaron, who fills the same function as Tempered Ebony, but at least has a cool paintjob and a few new moves. Oh, and the multiplayer siege events are "meh" but being time gated pushes them well into "fuck off" territory.

I've seen several youtubers claim that the 5th generation is an action-game that foregoes the slower pace, more deliberate style of older games. This is just the natural result of livelier and better-animated monsters requiring the same evolution for the hunters; having monsters move and behave like they used to with the current level of fidelity would look ridiculous, and having to deal with current monsters using old-gen clunky animations would be frustrating. We'll see if that rumoured new portable game materializes, but if it does then I feel capcom won't be able to just remake an old-gen MH game as some would hope, and it would be a mistake not to capitalize on the massive following of new players that came with World.
@DontEatWhales

Definitely prefer the old style. Like the term "deliberate choice" suggests, your conscious choices in a game need to have the requisite potential consequences, as well success to feel substantial. That's just something I miss dearly about the older style MH games. The punishing aspects were core to the unique experience they offered (not unlike FromSoft's games). 5th gen has chased streamlining, accessibility and realism, but that's sucked some of what I loved in MH out of it. For example it certainly feel more like you're out on a hunt when you have to deliberately prepare the necessary (limited) supplies to take out on a hunt with you. I unironically miss those moments, realising I forgot something crucial like traps, because it just solidified the fact that careful preparation was as much of a crucial part of carrying out the hunt as whacking the big beast. Or being too careless on a hunt, and burning way too quickly through my potions (thus galvanising a motivation and requirement to improve and refine your gameplay).

I agree, but I think the answer lies somewhere inbetween the new or the old, or more specifically a reimagining of the two. Because the old way of stocking things I feel was limiting in a fundamental way, because MH is a very arcade based game type, it's not like you can make due with something else if you forgot something critical. Item management and usage is simply not as developed as the hunting itself, so you actually find a lot of player frustration and less than ideal designs hiding in there, especially in older titles where getting even minor items could take a lot of effort in terms of grinding. If you're going to implement struggle into your game, then you need for that struggle to have a purpose behind it and possibly some flexibility so a player's way to address that struggle isn't always a 1-way street. The struggle is present in the old MH, but the purpose and the flexibility is lacking, and that's what the new MH could redesign and address.

GU kinda address this with the supply drop thingie. "You forgot trap or drink? I got you covered!", "Oh, you carted? here's an Ancient Potion for you.", "Hey it's been 15 minutes and you're still not done yet, are you struggling? Lemme drop big batch of items to help you." If they improve upon that it would be able to strike a nice balance between the old and new, since the current system you still need to manually set what supply they provide in the middle of the hunt.

Imo an easy way to compromise is to have the first 5 minutes of the hunt being a free access to your supplies but after that it's on your own like in the old game. This way you can still resupply quickly at the start of the quest but still need to prepare for the long battle and then having a simple sub-quest (e.g. break head/claw) to give you more supplies in the long run to reward good play.

I was excited to take on crap like Behemoth, Alatreon, Kulve Taroth and Safi, but they have so many gimmicks that change the entire flow of hunting that just killed ALL the fun. Additionally, the amount of grind required for each (except Behemoth) is so stupid and borderline necessary for complete end-game sets that, yeah, I'd rather them actually NOT be in the game than have to deal with the grind to obtain their armor sets, at least in regards to Safi. Frostfang Barioth did it perfectly imo. It introduced a monster subspecies with a unique armor set and weapons. While some of the weapons contribute a bit to the powercreep factor (mostly referring to the LBG), the armor set wouldn't be considered overpowered but does introduce a new and fun style of fighting for some weapons like LS or GS.

About the issue of “overpowered hunters” you mention in relation to new moves at 9:10 - I see what you mean, but I think how hunters move should always be considered alongside how monsters move. As a separate issue from the overall balancing and difficulty, the 5th gen’s monsters are a lot fluid in their movements. No more is, for instance, the 90 degree turns. The monsters would just look behind them and in a single continuous movement turn around and charge toward the hunter. I think this “fluidity” is a product of technological advances rather than a design decision, and if that’s true, the movesets given to the hunter would have to keep up. Understandably, some fans don’t care for the more reactive flow of the battle, but I suspect quicker and more precise controls afforded by technological developments will only push the franchise to more fluidity. Imagine how more sophisticated VR controls would affect MH in the future.

@@servantofcygnus Good point of explaining the fluidity =/= speed case, I guess. When making monsters more fluid, slowing them down in general would be a good balance. Take an example, Zingore has becoming an even more combo-happy monster with more fluidity between their combos, in exchange of it's individual attacks being slower, and you know what, I personally think this is a good way to balance around. Barioth in a lesser extent, is a good example of this as well (notably the tail swipe and hipcheck are slower).

One new weapon type, preferably ranged or blunt based in damage 3. New status effects for hunters to use, such as defense down and elemental resist down 4. weapons with a skill- weapons with similar stats but different skills can make all the difference 5. Early weapons still being viable as endgame gear (ex: great jagras may have average stats but with quality deco slots VS teostra weapon which is inherently powerful) 6. monsters hunting in packs. like wulgs/ shamos/ jagras but to a whole new level. 7. improvements in MH lore, and Clarifications on subspecies/ variants could also fall into this. make learning about monsters more involved than "hunt and you get more info from the researcher." The #1 thing I hate about MHW: No prowler mode. The fact that MHGU improved on MHG's prowler mode in such massive ways and MHW didn't continue the trend of having prowlers as a "weapon" just hurts my soul. I put over a thousand hours into prowlers across the two games, and it saddens me that may truly be the last time I play as my beloved cat son. 2:00 I disagree there. That's kind of how the originals looked like too, it was more toward the transition to 3DS with 3U (Tri was still relatively desaturated) and beyond that the games got a lot of saturation - which is too much for a big screen (especially 4gen and X). I guess 5th gen is the polar opposite of 4th gen in that regard so it's easy to think it lost all color, but I don't see it as too far off from 1st gen especially but also 2nd gen and Tri.

Yes, World is less cartoony and has less bright colors, but it's not really that different from the older games, especially 1st, 2nd and 4th gen. MHGU just went full on flashy anime with its visuals and it made every other game look more toned down. On charms and decos: I think the new way makes a lot more sense in terms of game design, thanks to the change in how armor skills work. Charms in MHW gave you a maxed out or nearly maxed out skill up-front and decorations filled out the rest of the build. And you would easily have enough decorations to fill out all of your slots, it just wasn't the stuff that people meta-chasing wanted, and there were very few rare decos that would actually make or break a set (Mighty Bow and Protective Polish off the top of my head). If they kept the skill system and made decorations free to craft with charms being random, then you would not have the diversity you desire, since charms still just give skills up-front and you would not change up builds in any significant way to how it is currently. You would need to rework the charms to something different than it is in the game currently, beyond just "random values of XX skill 1-5 points," otherwise the game would look pretty much identical to how it is now with decorations filling out what is missing from the RNG charm, just with less farming (probably). It is my belief that random charms only worked in the old system because of armor skill points, and "god-decos" are easier to get than "god-charms," which made or broke sets much more significantly. All of that said, I preferred the old armor skill system in some ways, because it meant that the majority of players wouldn't bother, and often still wouldn't succeed, trying to get a god-charm to do exactly what they wanted, so they would instead build around the best charm that they got, which meant most people had completely different sets. At least, that was my experience with other players over the years. And of course, MHW's system has the benefits of being exceedingly simple to understand by comparison, and allows people to share builds with others much more easily, which lessens the learning curve. This all seems very intentional, and was probably for the best, save for the fact that most people simply chase the meta now and build no utility/survivability, which I think is an unfortunate side-effect. Either way, both systems have their benefits and detriments. I simply don't see how reversing the charms and decorations role as being the RNG element would really do anything significant, but I am open to some enlightenment on this point.
@VoidplayLP
@VoidplayLP 3 жыл бұрын
Reversing it and making the decos somewhat craftable would just add more choice to the Grinding. They can be Hella expensive for all i care, but having them craftable actually provides a goal youre working towards not just "guess i'll hunt random monsters until i get something good" but "i need to hunt x and y Monster to get this Decoration, time to farm those specific ones." Having charms be random would still keep some of the RNG, but would put the most important things (decos) in the players Control, which is generally better.

Safi is where they took those mechanics and made them actually work as a Monster Hunter fight rather than an MMO fight overriding MH. Kulve just isn't that interesting in execution. She's one big DPS check, taken to a nonsensical extreme during the MR fight, which basically pushes you into DPS metaslaving as a way of condensing siege mechanics down to a normal hunt. Leshen is just bullshit mechanics and overtuned (for its time) scaling. The CC mechanic, the stupid babysitting Pukei thing, the obnoxiously overpowered swarms of Jagras... if there's one thing MH does not benefit from, it's fucking add summoning.

I started the series with Monster Hunter Tri.... on the Wii. The hilariously low monster count was countered by the stunning visuals (for the time). I bring this up because my first MH experience was on console level graphics, instead of handheld. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed when I transitioned to handheld because of the dip in visuals. However, MH soon made up for that with content and variety that hooked me all the way from 3U to GenU. I loved the classic monster hunter experience. But that’s just it. It’s the classic monster hunter experience. It kind of felt to me like the Legend of Zelda series or the Pokémon series in that it felt afraid to step out of its comfort zone that made it successful and caused the adoration of so many fans. However, much like the Legend of Zelda, and unlike Pokémon, Capcom took the leap that not many franchises are willing to and greatly shook up their formula with MH World. World was a fantastic reimagining if what makes MH so great. The combat was overhauled instead of tweaked or just given a single new mechanic. The monsters were designed in a way to make them feel more involved in their environment. And the areas all blended into each other as one environment instead of the sometimes clunky area system of the past gens. If I don’t mention something here, it’s safe to assume I agree with it or just don’t have strong feelings on the topic. The event schedules is just a problem with live events in general which they even combat in the game with festivals which happen thus far 4 times a year. This still gives the dedicated player base a reward while not giving people with busy schedules an ultimatum. And let’s be clear, if your schedule would cause you to miss a specific event on rotation and all 4 festivals, you’re either extraordinarily unlucky or extraordinarily busy with the latter making it hard to play a game like MH in general difficult given it’s relatively high time commitment for a lot of hunts. The power creep to me hasn’t felt any real difference between now and in earlier titles in that only a handful of monsters will ever be useful as gear at the very end of the game. The difference in world is that line moves more frequently than it used to which I would argue is a good thing. You also bring up how you’re disappointed in the community voicing their distaste for end game content that doesn’t compete with other end game content. That in itself is fine until you mention we should just “be excited to hunt and craft more”. No. That’s not how that works and is a bad consumer mentality. If something is dissatisfying as a consumer, you’re allowed to be dissatisfied. It’s actually a good thing in that the devs can improve the future content based on that negative feedback. Don’t encourage complicity for complicity’s sake. I completely agree about decorations. I know it’s there to encourage grinding and min maxing, but there’s a limit. I don’t understand why they don’t have the Elder Melder just meld you decos you need using other decos as fuel. They did it for some decos so why they didn’t for the rest is baffling to me. The armor is absolutely one of the best evolutions World brought. The armor and deco system makes creating viable mixed sets more accessible to almost anyone who pays attention and still allows for excel based min maxing from those who want to pursue it. I would point out that the monster count isn’t just comparable to past titles with Iceborne. The quality of mixing monsters in the settings in World has so much detail, so to reach the same monster count when the project and details are so much more ambitious is doubly impressive. Im actually like the Clutch Claw. I do think it was overbalanced and by result it ended up too OP, but I’m fine with it being a game defining mechanic though as long it doesn’t feel out of place. And, at least to me, it doesn’t. It helps balance out the overuse of Flash Pods in High Rank if outright replacing their usefulness in most scenarios, but it’s not required by any means to finish a hunt. It’s a great tool and you should use it, but I can’t really say you’re punished if you don’t. It’s just another option in the same way that Flash Pods or Traps were. I’m not sure what you meant to say but deliberate and aggressive aren’t mutually exclusive. World’s combat is both deliberate in the same way the past games were while just being quicker and more dynamic. If anything, the increase in options makes for more rewarding gameplay. Of course, if you like the slightly simpler system of the old games more there’s still merit to that. I like Super Mario 64’s mechanics more than Super Mario Galaxy’s despite the latter being objectively more dynamic. That and the fact I’ve played hundreds, if not thousands of hours of classic (pre5th gen) MH means I can emphasize with that notion is what I’m saying. I will take umbrage with the notion that the new move sets are too versatile. I think versatility is great and almost all of the weapons in World excel in their versatility. I think what you mean to say is that they should be balanced more, but regardless I’m not sure what your concern is. You say it takes away beauty found in previous games and then don’t elaborate on that statements incredible vagueness. Beauty is completely ambiguous in this context. What is it that made the previous gens move sets beautiful? Is it the simpler play styles? Is worlds combat not challenging enough? It’s hard to know what you mean so I won’t belabor the point. I will say it’s funny you bring up chasing down monsters as in World the flightiness of the monsters seemed toned down to me for the most part barring some exceptions. And I would be more concerned with the MMO mechanics if they had a bigger place in the game, their incorporation is contained to such a minority of the monsters though that I fail to see it as a problem and more as a way to diversify the gameplay to an extent. And again I’m not sure what part about the hunters moves are so at issue here. The move sets allow you to speed run monsters at crazy low rates.... but so did previous installments (ie a 6 minute Valstrax speedrun, etc) That’s mastery not inherent problems with the move sets. The ability to infinitely get items from camp could be considered over powered but most players don’t want to waste the time running back to the monster after restocking. Surely some do but in no way does the game encourage it. It’s just an option for the less capable players. My friend is awful at this game, and can barley get out low rank, but was able to persist through some tough fights because he played it slow and safe. I don’t see anything wrong with that level of accessibility when most players don’t even touch the tent on a hunt unless they cart. I will say investigations are another layer of RNG, but it’s one that has never seemed relevant to me. If I got a quadruple gold reward investigation for the specific monster I wanted then I saw it as a bonus to what otherwise would be just World’s version of the MH grind, which was, barring Deco farming, just as bad in previous titles. MH is just a grindy game in general. Regardless, you get so many investigations, the odds of you not having at least one relevant investigation for what you need is pretty low. And this is only helped by your ability to save the good investigations you see for later. Ironically enough I would actually prefer if the damage numbers, while exciting, were actually kind of distracting and took away from a lot of the battle. This is toggleable in game though so I can enjoy it without the numbers so it’s not really a criticism. Just kinda funny. (cont. in reply)

Ah ok so you clarify your “deliberate” statement from earlier in this segment. You list a lot here so to start from the top: 1. The approach to armor building is really something I’d like you to reconsider. While I don’t like deco farming, to say that because you don’t have decos you can’t build a certain way is incorrect. You can’t *optimally* build in any way, but you can still build, with great diversity, any number of sets. You just have to approach mixed set building using skill priorities and your available decos as building blocks. For example, I’ve had 1 Attack Jewel in my 1000+ hours of play. Now I don’t say I can’t build X set because I don’t have 7 Attack Jewels, I say, what combination of armor and available decos do I have that can come closest to the most optimal set? It’s still a very engaging system that makes unlocking relevant decos rewards that open new doors instead of stepping stones to grind for. 2. I already addressed the investigations thing, but again, it is RNG but it’s pretty soft. I don’t really know anyone who’s had trouble cataloging good investigations as long as they paid attention over time and didn’t just open the investigation menu for the first time when they first needed to start grinding. It’s nothing like deco farming, who’s RNG is so bad it’s better to just approach armor building from the above perspective instead of wasting your time farming for them (which you do passively on every hunt anyway). 3. Again, the infinite potion thing is technically true. But the trade off for accessibility is such a big plus and such a nonfactor for veteran players that I don’t see it being a big deal. Less deliberate sure, but it brings more to the table than it takes away in my opinion. 4. The Elder Melder literally just cuts down the grind in the game. I can’t on earth think of why this would be a negative in a game that’s already full of grind. Taking away some grind is ok, you don’t even get celestial prints that often. And even if you do, it’s an opportunity cost to use one to skip one grind in case you might want it for another one. Just seems like a good option. Same as before, less deliberate, sure, but that shouldn’t be framed as a bad thing here. 5. The punishment for bad decisions.... is low..... I dont..... maybe I can’t.... but I definitely don’t understand this. The tie in to auxiliary deliberation like the Elder Melder and RNG farming is nonexistent here. The accessibility doesn’t hamper the punishment in the actual gameplay. The only applicable thing here would be the tent in the camp. But even considering that, what else has World conceded on? You keep talking about how past games are deliberate and frame that as an inherent positive. But deliberate doesn’t mean a good or rewarding experience. Your actions in the last games were deliberate in that if you forgot to restock items before you left for the quest you’re screwed. Exit quest so you can go back and start it properly. I consider that bad design. It limits the actions I can take as a player. That’s just one example of deliberate action not necessarily being good. It’s the same as how dynamic gameplay isn’t inherently good either. Sometimes simpler design is better. In this case, I really do think the answer is clear though. I think World is better designed because it gives better quality and more diverse options than previous titles that made very few changes and additions to the classic MH formula. I’m not trying to come off as rude, but I feel a lot (not all) of your criticisms of World come from a rose tinted view of the past titles. I genuinely don’t think MH should ever have a true pre5th gen successor on a handheld anymore. I think the added versatility and player choice and accessibility is more valuable than (what I would consider) the arbitrary merits of strictly deliberate choice, and that World is the natural evolution of a great series that had become relatively stale/comfortable in own design. World is far from a hack and slash game, and characterizing as such would be like saying the old monster hunter combat is like Dark Souls combat in its slow, deliberate consideration. See how the comparison can be made but doesn’t really hold a lot of water once you stop and think about it? I like your vids, but I will say your nostalgia bias tends to be strong with this new entry. Regardless, I enjoyed watching and will continue to watch in the future. I’m not trying to say you’re being obtuse or bad at reviewing, it’s just my criticisms with the video. Take them or leave them, either way I wish you best. Also a pet peeve of mine is when people say a bunch of measurable observations and then cap it off with “just my opinion”. It’s kind of a cop out when you talk authoritatively on the subject to 10+ minutes and then say it’s untouchable either way because it’s an opinion. Like saying more RNG is bad game design is a measurable statement. How much it affects you while playing or how you perceive it in general is your opinion. A key difference there.

Monster Hunter is one of those franchises that let the players have more control over a fight in many different ways... the devs wouldn't be giving us that much options just to copy someone else's builds, I mean there's nothing wrong if you want to make the same sets, but it simply just takes the fun away from how you wanna play the game since its part of the experience to fail and discover and figure out for yourself what works better for you, what's comfortable for you in a fight. i love the fact that in mhw you can easily see where the monster is right away if you've gathered the tracks. No more running around trying to find where the monster is and then forgetting to paintball it (or use psychoserum, but it's not a common item), only to lose it when the monster flies away... So much better in iceborne too now that we can just use mount to take us to the monster.

I’ll die on the hill that crafting charms and farming decos is nicer than crafting decos and farming charms. Charms are much more direct to letting me zero in a skill I want to focus on like marathon runner or handicraft and decos let me garnish a set with extra skills I have lying around. I always hated listening to people talking about their sets on older games and hearing them say, “This set will need this ultra specific RNG charm,” when back then charms were about adding extra skills to armor sets and decos were about filling in the gaps between the missing points. This view is of course dependent on the old armor skill system, but if I overall like how it works now, including how decos and charms are, it stands to reason I don’t want to go back to the old one including how charms and decos were.

I feel like the fifth generation was a very much needed leap forward, one that took risks, and one that showed us many things. Like stuff that needed to change on the series, and other things that could stay the same. I love the weapon trees, armor preview, mixed set potential, gathering speeds, the more than one camp, overall smooth feeling gameplay, the new monsters, the updated looks for old monsters, and I like monsters leaving, obviously, if your kicking down some monster butt, wouldn't it try to leave, and flee, like actually a hunter hunting it's target? The connected areas, better crafting, turf wars, everything else you said was good. But of course, there's plenty things I miss, like the cool weapon designs in the old games, I do like rng charms more than decorations, and I miss the ability to pause. And about the rng... I hate both old, and new on this. While in the old ones, I really hated how often you had to grin just to get a gem, or a plate, while in World you can get easier, cutting down on the demotivation that can come from not getting an item after like 15-20 hunts. However, as stated before in world, the rng decorations are not kind, and neither are the times when you can fight Xeno Jiva, the event quest, or Zorah. So both have their faults here. And I do miss the colorful nature of the old games too, and the stupid joke weapons. To me, something like World, something that was such a leap forward, was needed in Monster hunter, because even with the new features of mounting, and hunter arts from 4U, and Gen, the series was starting to get a bit stale, and very much the same. So yeah, playing World felt refreshing, and then after playing world, going back to the old games felt refreshing. As for the future of the series, I do hope it comes to switch, and other platforms, the series deserves not to be stuck on one console any more, and everyone should be allowed to play the monster hunter goodness. Anyway, this was just an odd wall of text from a SNS, and CB main, I hope you all have a good day, and wherever the series takes us from here, we keep having happy hunts together!

Even if 5th gen didn't get every change right, I love that it decided to take those risks and be different. Something I love a lot about the series is that they don't just make the same game reskinned over and over, each one tries something new. It keeps the games fresh and also gives a great reason to revisit previous generations, as well as being excited for what new generations could possibly have in store. World tried a LOT of new things, again some hit or miss, some VERY divisive in the community, but I'm so glad that the series is continuing to evolve and try new things, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Additonal things I don't like: - Not being able to tell for many monsters if they are softened or not due to the effect being hard to see on a lot of Monsters heads. - Effects kill the frame rate of the PC version - Some of the map layouts are annoying like the Ancient Forest, which isn't helped by the monster sprinting halfway across the map - The Handler, especially the game making it seem like you are equals which no, she is useless - The Sorting of weapons Feels like you have to take extra steps for it to be sorted well like the old games, maybe it's that they had bigger pages in the older games? - AT Nergi - Too many of the new monsters are Wyverns/Elder Dragons and they are mostly boring IMO (Anjanath, Jyuratodus, Tobi-Kadachi, Pukei Pukei, Bazelguese, and Great Girros who I frequently forget exists). I think the new 4th Gen additions were much better in comparison. - Special Scope for Gunners, too much damage lost if you don't use it, but it's a hassle if you use it, even if you mostly tap and shoot. - Bloated Raw values instead of true raw values. - Lying/inaccurate Monster weaknesses values. - Not telling you what part you broke, at least with Subquests it was a specific ones or you had a counter. - That dumb shit were you have to sheathe your weapons to remove the mantle to have it recharge Additional things I like: - Palico gadgets are fun. - Guiding Lands, no complaints except the levels and maybe Ruiner Nergi not being sure if it's going to be tempered or not. - The food/cooking mechanic to allow you to select certain skills. - Trade materials for Dash juice. - Less bad trying too hard to be quirky dialogue. - The Death indicator on monsters in the minimap once they are close to death.

I think the problem with power creep & "meta" sets comes from the overabundant skills that can be slapped into the armor sets, thus creating the problem of armor sets having similar skill sets. If it doesn't have all the usual DPS skills (WE, Crit Boost, Agitator, etc) then it will be considered useless. Arguably, "meta" sets have been around since MH4, but in those days you can only fit in so many skills into a set that you need to pick and choose which skills you needed and build the sets from there.

Which is why I prefer the old skill system.
@FelisImpurrator
@FelisImpurrator 4 жыл бұрын
It's not "too many skills". It's the meta skills being too overtuned relative to literally anything else. If Crit Boost and Master's Touch didn't exist, no combination made it reasonable to see 100% affinity without stacking an unreasonable amount of crit sources, base Attack Boost/Defense Boost type skills were mathematically worth taking more often, and elemental damage had better scaling across more than a quarter of the weapons, the meta wouldn't be so oppressively focused on crit stacking. Having a metric ton of room for something like max Evade Extender, Window, Divine Blessing, Health Boost, Constitution, Marathon Runner, and Quick Sheath isn't "broken". Being able to use the same space to slot in max Crit Eye+Boost+WEX+Agitator 7+Peak Performance with the overpowered Safi set bonus? Completely different.
@kura2ninja944
@kura2ninja944 4 жыл бұрын
@@FelisImpurrator Adding to that, I also think the flaws lies with the implementation of the new slots systems. Where older titles tied its skills to the armor, now people are free to choose what skills to put in the slots. Hence the crit stacking and Safi scenario. Hopefully, they find the way to balance this in future titles, as I'm tired of seeing people chasing the guide for "meta" sets every time new monsters/update arrived and refuse to use/create a non-meta set.
@FelisImpurrator
@FelisImpurrator 4 жыл бұрын
@@kura2ninja944 My point is that some choices are too good. If we had the current slot system but the DPS skills weren't so many times better than everything else, we might see people using them for QoL. But the difference between a meta set and a comfort set is maybe 2-3x hunt time - so more people feel pressured to ride the dick of the meta because it's way too good. Alternatives being comparatively incapable of even remotely being competitive with the meta is part of that too. People don't use Namielle set bonus simply because it doesn't scale well compared to Safi's broken-ass bonus... but also isn't that good in and of itself. Element is completely fucked on a lot of weapons, like Gunlance, and has such shit HZV to deal with that only the ultra high hit rate weapons can justify it in many cases.

Every game had a meta, every MH had a meta. Agitator and Weakness Exploit had been meta for a decade. It's just that MH wasn't such a popular game back then that everyone made youtube videos or that anyone was trying to look for the meta. Speedrunners and skilled set builders have been around since the beginning, which is why set calculators like Athena's ASS was made. Many people always complain about MHW making things easier. Here is a list on how MHW is significantly harder than older titles: - CC resistance/imunity - DPS checks (Alatreon /Behemoth etc) - more versatile harder to read moves - no more perma CC HAME farming - balance update to nerf OP things (Iceborne fixed a lot, remember the granades?) Just a reminder: 3U on the WiiU had online. And guess what everyone used? Slime weapons, Kelbi bow or a HBG pierce weapon. Often with heroics mixed in because the monster is perma cc'ed anyway. 4U: Same thing, but with Greatswords included and less blast element. People would HAME farm high end guild quests. And I haven't mentioned the "og" charge blade that made you faceroll every monster once you've watched a "when is guard point" guide. GU: HAME meta again + broken a** Valor hunter art which everyone used and let you facetank every attack. Adapt was insane too. In World you can still cheese a monster and speedrun it, but it's not as easy as it was before, you cant just use a God's Archipelago LBG to basicly make the monster a punching bag for 1min.

I think they made it way too friendly for newcomers to the franchise and it really annoys me when i hear people saying "100% crit meta". Hunts ahould feel challenging and pre~hunt management was always a core part of the franchise(the feeling of abandoning a quest just because you forgot to bring tranq bombs/traps i dont miss at all). I absolutely love the new moves and the overall feeling of the weapons but the Bow, the new bow system is just too weird for me and i cant understand it. It's not the accessibility that causes problems with new players. It's the extreme skew of game balance itself toward crit/DPS meta and (except a handful of weapons) raw stacking being the only viable path due to atrocious element hitzones and weapon multipliers. Personally, I don't like the "too casual" argument. Kind of comes off as "git-gud" elitism, hardcore or go home. I'm not good enough - or playing on hardware that can sustain smooth enough framerates - to "just not get hit, 4head", so the hunts are still reasonably challenging, but rarely feel unfair (unless they're Kirin or Lunastra). Even being able to swap equipment or resupply mid hunt doesn't ever really feel like it makes a monster trivial (unless it's way outclassed by my gear or it's specifically a cheese build a specific monster is vulnerable to). All the items in the world won't save you if you get stunned into an unavoidable 100-0 combo (sup, rolling into a gold crown Frostfang's ice by mistake and getting slammed by its building sized arms) or dared to sharpen in the presence of AT Kushala or get cornered by Savage Jho while it does the dragon pool auto-stagger move... or, you know, just carting because the eating animation was a fraction of a second too long. Speaking from experience, for the rest of us, having way too many stocks of Max Potions is not a "free win".

The claw is great in concept, just too clunky and seemingly too mandatory to deal with nonsensical hitzone value deflation. Dropping the "two hit tenderize" concept from lighter weapons (or giving them all equally good claw combos), extending range a bit and at least doubling tenderize duration, and giving monsters actually reasonable HZV without it would have made it fine. The generic copy-paste weapons, though? Absolutely terrible and they should have at least ported every original design over to all weapons that had them.

And now with world being on world it was like a dream come true and I love every aspect of it. Now goin into iceborne the only thing I really hate is the clutchclaw. I really hate tenderizing and how I always go for one body part but the game is like“nah get that instead“ aswell as how stun works now where mashing the stick no longer matters. Otherwise I love this especially since charms are longer rng and how upgrading armour works

I mean, Generations Ultimate was on switch, and 3U was on Wii U. 4U was the only 3DS exclusive.

I love World a lot but I went back to Generations Ultimate and I forgot how much I enjoyed the prowler and the insane monster variety. There's so much stuff to do. And Ahtal-ka is probably one of the most well-designed final bosses in the series, I think. You didn't mention Shara Ishvalda at all in your video but I really don't like the fight, it's really hard to do good damage and the attacks hit way too hard for my blood.

Shara hits too hard? I found it was pretty reasonable. Less damage output than Nergi even. Bullshit damage is Luna and Kirin. Yikes.

I loved Shara's fight, he's extremely big and super slow with extremely well telegraphed attacks, I feel his damage is just perfect.
