I don't know if anyone has said that so far, but you could literally make your diy clothes SO much better if you simply washed and ironed the fabric first, before sewing. Also, you could try to do roll hems (I can't tell if you did or didn't, but I know from my when I started sewing that it might take some time to realize that you can simply fold the fabric over one more time so the insides will look neat). Especially for fraying fabrics, roll hems make ALL the difference.
