I wonder, do you know if you were traveling on to Rome, would you have to get your bags and go through customs or just go on to the connecting gate for Swiss air to rome?

Hi! At the check in desk you have to make sure that bags are checked to your final destination Rome, you won’t need to pick up bags at Zurich, just find the gate to your next flight to Rome. Hope this helps, cheers!
