We compare the sounds of 3 Studio Classic Mics. We've set the mics up with no filters EQs or Compression. The Neumann U87ai, a classic FET solid state mic runs through a Manley VoxBox Mic Pre. The Blue Cactus and the Telefunken CU29 both tube mics are going through an Apogee Symphony digital interface with mic preamps with no eq or filters. The full mix audio segments in the videos are only on the microphone listed in the video although the mic scenes switch in the video.

i think the darkest - smoothest in top end is the telefunken... and i like dark-smooth mics!

I have the Blue Cactus, and also u87 (and others like the bottle with some capsules, kiwi etc...) It has a smoking and dark character, sometimes lacks presence seems quite a dynamic, but I really love it! the first blue mic I've bought for my studio years ago :)

I’m debating on buying a kiwi …. But read on a thread that the copperhead is better on the highs,,, not sure which to go for , but I don’t feel like spending $4500 CAD on a u87

I wanna like the Blue, but the Neumann and Tele have more depth. For modern stuff, the Tele definitely wins!

Confusing: text says one thing on the mixes, vs. picture. No idea what we're really listening to. Pity, as the performances are superb!

Level matching at a higher level would have really helped with the comparisons.

Hi, I felt level matching wouldnt give a fair assessment of the mics. They were all recorded at the same levels thru the pre-amp. however their individual mic volumes were not matched.

This was so confusing as the text saying which microphone never was the one shown in the video! and there were bits missing.....

I was partial to the Telefunken unmixed and mixed I couldn't really tell a difference. That's just listening from my phone speaker. I want to take it to the studio and give a real critical listen.

The Blue Cactus has a distinct somewhat dark sound which I really like for ballads and midtempos

Yes, cant front on the Cactus. It has a rich dark flavor that somehow seems to sit in the mix with little to no eq.

To me, U87 is generic (in a good way) It's great for all around recording. (except maybe for kick drum/ bass guitar) The Cactus and Telefunken are both colored tube mics when you need a different color or flavor they do what they do en excellent fashion..I've recorded some warm vibey vocals with the telefunken and the Cactus that were quite different feel from the U87

The U87 sounded like it had more highs than the other two. Not that that's preferable necessarily. I'm interested in the CU-29 because it's got a good price, and no hyped highs.

CU-29 one of the best tube mics in its price range. Different sound from U87, smooth, less emphasis on the highs. Im glad ur open to different sounds beside the U87

Greetings great video. I own the copperhead and u87ai and when I do a shootout you can tell the difference between the two right off. The copperhead has a ton of mid/lowend presence, but during your shootout I couldn't hear a difference. Wondering if you could move the mics closer to record the vocals in one take? Did you do any eqing on the recordings? Just trying to figure out how and why the vocal differences could not be heard. Maybe its because of KZfaq?!?!

Awesome response. There is a huge difference in the sound which may not be as obvious here. The acapellas are flat, no eq, no dynamics U87ai going thru a VoxBox, The Tele going thru a stock Apogee Ensemble. I still might do another soon

You are right. There is a significant difference that didnt come thru. No EQs or compressors were used except on processed versions

The u87 is the clearest of the 3 but the cactus and the cu29 both have more warm mids and bottom end they all 3 have crisp high end that’s the hardest call on them all I think but the tube mics def has more rounded sound to the body in general no so much just straight thru like with the u87
