I think Michael's fascination with Ryan is that he thinks of Ryan as the good looking popular kid he always admired. When Ryan works for him, he felt like he could finally be friends with the good looking popular kid.

Also, Michael has no direct authority over Toby as he reports directly to the corporate. To Michael he's like that kid who's always snitching to the teacher on his little mischiefs.

Spot on! I loved how he said it, too with the awkward pauses. Thinking....hard.. He got all of that from a look. He did the same thing with Stanley the Manly Hudson when he said, "did I stutter?!" Toby wants to address this and Michael says, "what, THAT? We were just joshing around bc that's what friends do, Toby. If you had any you might know that. We say things like that. "'Your're ugly"' "'yeah? Well your mom's dead'" *Toby*: "if that's true come out and let's ask him" *Michael*: "well my stomach hurts. On a more serious note, in S4 (as we can see in this compilation), Ryan asks a hypothetical about what he should do about his friend (read: dealer) Troy, who has a drug problem. Michael says that Ryan should tell Troy that they're friends, and that he's going to help. It's pretty blatantly transparent that they're talking about Ryan himself. Fast forward to season seven, and during the "Goodbye Michael" song, Ryan's lyric is about how Michael helped him get off drugs. Michael came through on his promise. It's pretty heartwarming, tbh.

I believe what Michael has for Ryan can easily be described as a man-crush. Ryan has all the qualities that Michael wanted to be. He was young, good looking, confident, was able to talk to women easily. Essentially all the things that Michael wasn’t. I also think it further illustrated the point that Michael was emotionally immature, and therefore still believed in things like a person being “cool”. As such, he definitely thought Ryan was “cool”, and maybe wished he was Ryan. I don’t think it was an attraction, more of a longing to not be his own nervous and high-strung self. Funny things is is that Paul, the actor for Toby, wasn’t even an actor. He was supposed to be a background character in one episode, but the producers liked him so much they made his role bigger. Paul went on to write and direct some episodes, of which Toby rarely shows up because Paul doesn’t like to be in the spotlight.

Prince of Middenheim in one of the first seasons, Ryan left the toaster on, and he burned the kitchen somehow, so Kevin was calling him the "fire guy" and then, seasons later, Ryan was fired and went to jail I think, so that's why he said "firee..d guy" he customized the nickname lol

He is an awesome charactaer and definitley a favorite of mine. How he grows from being a shy little low confident dude in the office to a complete douchebag by the end of the series. After he return to the office from being in jail most of his dialogues are pretty funny.
