Welcome to the Weekly Spinner Rack, where we cover the past week's comic books and comic book news. This week kicks off with an interview with artist and writer Michael Avon Oeming!
This week we'll have reviews of new comics like Feral and Batman: Dark Age. We'll discuss news like a documentary about San Diego Comic Con's history, Marvel's new free PvP game, Bryan Hitch's Authority rejection and much more. At the tail end, I will have some respectful but sad news about Ed Piskor.

Chris you’re a class act. Thank you for speaking about the what transpired yesterday. I’m still at a lost for words. This hit me hard because Cartoonist Kayfabe got me through some tough times. It was always a joy to watch or listen to those videos. To say my comic book collection grew because of Ed and Jim is an understatement hahaha I lost a friend due to “self deletion” so it opened up old wounds again today. Ed thank you for sharing your love of comics with the world. I wish you got to really know how many people your videos really touched. Remember everyone, you’re never truly alone. If you’re going through something please reach out to someone, anyone. You matter! And remember the marching orders everyone, READ MORE COMICS!

Chris, I don't comment often but I watch the replay religiously. I hope you're holding up alright. You did an excellent job commenting on the news that transpired today. I am sure there will be a handful that come into the comment section with malice, disregard them. You were even handed last week and this week. As a fan and albeit quiet member of the community, I want to second what you said about taking care of one another and supporting one another. No one has to be alone if they're going through something. While they'll likely be in a very different situation than what transpired with Ed, we will all have lows at some point in life and we will all need a hand. The world, and the Internet, can be both an incredibly dark and callous place. We can also make it better with our voice and choices.

you, unlike SO many other youtubers (looking at AKAPad and John Del Arroz - who wallowed in the misery and scandal gleefully celebrating grooming allegations) reported the initial news unbiased and frankly. when I heard the initial allegations it broke my heart, CK got me back into comics and like so many of us opened our eyes to so much great art and history about the medium - Ed was a huge contributor to the medium (unlike those gossip vultures who tried to ride their coat tails, who just talked smack and did not contribute anything of worth). RIP Ed

Chris, Comic Tropes and Cartoonist Kayfabe were the two channels that inspired me to start my own fledgling channel on movie analysis right after Covid (Though I've been following your channel since the era where you would get drunk counting tropes lol). I love the heart, care, and passion that you always bring to the hobby, and creating a positive space for everybody to interact in is the thing that always puts your channel at the top in my opinion. Ed and Jim were also insanely inspiring with the love and passion they put into their daily videos- an insane feat as anyone making content online knows. The passion to keep creating their own comics while interviewing their peers, breaking down comic history, and selflessly giving all of their time to fellow comics nerds was some magic I think we all took for granted. I want to thank you for your kind words here, your kind words always- making a video last night couldn't have been easy with all of this going on. I don't know you personally, (same as with Jim and Ed) but I think of you as a comic loving friend, and want you to know I appreciate and don't take you for granted! Lots of love Chris! Keep up the great work, the comic community needs you now more than ever.

I never really understood the jump to assume things about Ed. Some of those texts, out of context of both why they were initiated and how Ed spoke in general, might have seemed bad. But having watched a lot of CK, most of them just seemed like Ed's way of speaking in general. This situation reminded me of when MeToo was at its height and they tried to go after Aziz Ansari for what seemed like just an awkward date with a woman. Luckily, that blew over and nothing irreversible happened. I'm really sad about what happened with Ed. And I'm also sad about the comments from people who immediately rushed to say how they'd never really liked Ed and distorted a lot of what he said on CK. You don't have to agree with him on everything; I certainly didn't. But there was nothing he said that was meant to be damaging to anyone in the industry and his harshest criticisms were always punching up, not punching down.

The thumbnail last week was a bit much. Also anyone that even hinted in the comments that maybe we should wait and not jump to judgement was told all the evidence was in. Context is important and the order of what things are replies to are important. And everyone seemed to be saying no he’s guilty. I was worried in my soul that he might do this. I hate this cancel culture and guilty until proven innocent world. The worse thing to come from social media. He apologized for being stupid not for doing anything wrong. He said maybe his full dm’s and text can be shown to proven things were twisted or flat out lies.

Thank you. Yes - the coverage of Piskor was probably better on this channel than on others, but Chris said this was 'grooming and harassment' (based on edited DMs with no context) and went ahead and said there needed to be apologies made by Piskor. Again, all this based on unverified information from a stranger. The spirit of Chris' comments was no too condemning, but I just wish ONE of these talking heads had been willing to flat out say, "I don't know, need more info, if I'm the judge then it's innocent until proven guilty", you know? Maybe if people would stop speaking 'their' truth and start speaking verifiable facts, we could avoid more situations like this? Just a thought.

Look, your coverage on the Piskor thing, while brief, was better than a lot of channels. But you did say this was grooming and harassment. 'This is grooming and harassment.' - your exact words. You also said there needed to be apologies made by Piskor. Keep in mind, this 'harassment' is still completely unverified - it's one stranger saying things about another stranger and using edited DMs from 4 years ago as their 'proof'. Man, this ain't about politics. This is about an entire community having a knee-jerk reaction to a story, while not knowing all the details and context.

Honestly, whether Ed Piskor has done any of those things or not, is not the relevant topic here. Even if any of those claims were true, it still doesn't justify getting mass-mobbed by thousands of people over this. I never met Ed, but from everything I've heard him say, and judging by the friends he had and the general circle of good people around him, it's clear that he deserved a chance at redemption. Even people without positive traits should be deserving of that.

Chris was really disappointing on this subject and I really believe that the cause was the fact that he trained himself to use the ''acceptable'' phraseology of our times in order to remain true to his political position. Im super left. In fact I vote for the communist party of my country (yes we have one) but that woke BS has to end. This is not social justice this is Salem Trials 2024. A man is buried in the ground instead of enjoying one of his top moments in an exhibition of his work, but Chris keeps referring to the girl that served 4 years old chopped up DMs as a ''victim''. Victim of what? Feeling awkward that after persisting in contacting an older known artist, using inappropriate language and tone he replied in kind? ''Im a slut for lineart''. Whats this? Note from Virgin Mary? But the most important thing is that NOTHING HAPPENED, because it was physically impossible. There was a lock down and a great distance between them. But Ed has to come groveling and apologizing and the magnanimous Chris might give him a second chance. Jesus...

@@joek600 That's a fair observation (that I agree with) up to the point where you nail it specifically on Chris, as if he was personally responsible for any of this. To my observation, you're doing a similar thing to what you're condemning...a wild exaggeration of what actually happened. That's the risk we're always faced with - losing our composure and ability to judge fairly, when our emotions get running. It's absolutely not easy to take a step back and look at things from the opposite direction, at that point in time.

Ed doing what he did was tragic. I read the note. The man clearly had some severe, most likely untreated mental issues and was certainly a narcissistic control freak. He could have road the storm and bounced back, as so many do, but chose to end it as a pure “f@ck you all” and to that I say “f@ck you, too”. Victim blaming throughout the note and hurting those closest to him by offing himself. Anyone blaming the people who were warning others of his transgressions should really check themselves. Ed deserved a 2nd chance and I believe he could have got it, but he chose the cowards way out. This is coming from someone with severe depression and s@icidal ideation btw. Maybe there’s more to him, more transgressions that weren’t brought to light. Maybe not. Won’t matter now I guess. Sorry for your lose Chris, but DO NOT blame yourself in any way!

Chris, I hate to say it because I think you're a super nice guy and I have enjoyed both your cannels for many years, but I did not agree with your reporting of the "facts" when you covered the Ed Piskor situation in your previous video. I'm sure you meant well, but you did what so many others always do, you just assumed that Ed was guilty of everything he had been accused of. You spoke about him possibly redeeming himself and apologizing (which assumes his guilt), without even considering that he had a side of the story that he had not even remotely been allowed to tell. You immediately defended the accusers, saying they were allowed to speak "their truth", but of course, nobody bothered to extend that courtesy to Ed. You said the accusers automatically had to be believed, because why would they never willingly bring negative attention onto themselves, but literally every day we see mentally and emotionally unhealthy people causing strife and misery to others AND to themselves on social media just for some misguided bid for attention, even if it's incredibly negative attention. Nobody had the guts to stick up for Ed and at least let him tell his side of things. The only chance he got was in his farewell note. So many people threw fuel on this fire, and then acted devastated when it played out the way it did. I DON'T think you were one of those vultures, by any means. Comic Tropes and Pros and Cons have always been a shining light on youtube, and I'm grateful for all the great work that you've done, but when I saw this video and heard you say that you felt you covered things fairly last week, I couldn't let that slide because I don't think you did. We need to stand up and question things. We can't be afraid to give someone the benefit of the doubt. We can't just give into "Guilty until proven innocent". We all deserve better and Ed definitely deserved better.
